Is it possible to book a Panama Canal cruise and be sure that you will go through the new canal? We are going on the Emerald Princess next January on a full transit thru the new locks. It is from FLL to LAX. Can’t wait. It will be nice to gain time instead of losing it going east. Princess itineraries do say if it is the new or old locks. Last year we did LAX to FLL on the Coral thru the old locks. We were able to watch a massive cargo ship go in the new locks beside us. Incredible site! Texas Tillie Posted January 20, 2019 #27 Share Posted January 20, 2019 Having done 3 full transits, 2 in the old locks and 1 in the new. My recommendation is to do the old locks if this is your first transit. Much more interesting and historical.

The Island & Coral were purpose built to max Panamax dimensions. However, all ships classes prior to the Grand Class also fit the old locks - Sun Princess, Sea Princess & Pacific Princess
