I would assume the smoking area would not affect the rest of the ship while underway ... isn't that why they put it aft?

We stayed in a corner aft suite on deck 6 of Noordam, which is directly below the smoking area on deck 9 (Lido).  On three occasions on a 34-day cruise, we smelled cigarette smoke in our cabin.  Each time it lasted about 5 or 10 minutes and went away on its own.  I'm allergic to cigarette smoke but this was infrequent and short-lived, so it didn't affect our enjoyment of the cruise.

Were you underway when the smoke came into your cabin?  Three decks is a long way for smoke to travel, rather surprising.  Certainly not pleasant, but you are taking an accepting, moderate attitude.  Quite refreshing to not hear complete hysteria about your experience.

I think someone nearby you was breaking the rules - it has been known to happen

We were on the Oosterdam on a Greek cruise in 2022. There was a passenger directly below our balcony who smoked all day long on his verandah. We reported him to Guest Services, and he was warned and caught several times but kept smoking. About halfway into the cruise he and his wife were escorted off the ship at one of our ports. Breaking the rules can have consequences.

This is GREAT to hear.  People like this need to travel by themselves so they can do whatever they want whenever they want to without annoying everyone else.

Yes, they all occurred on sea days.

That was my first thought.  I went out to the balcony to see if I could spot the offender, knowing that balcony smoking is a major safety hazard on a cruise ship.  Not only did I not see anyone (and the aft corner balconies get a good view of other balconies) but the odor wasn't apparent outside, only inside our cabin.  I spent 45 years doing research in a lab, so I'm used to trying to figure things out with insufficient data, but this one has me stumped.

Someone could have been smoking in the bathroom. The assumption that someone is breaking the rule is far simpler than thinking the smoke is wafting DOWN 3 decks. That seems a little off

On Rotterdam this year we were in cabin 5055. We had smoke coming from people on deck 8. Saw them clearly, both smoking. I said something to them and they saw and heard me. Next morning,  same thing. I called Guest Services and never saw them smoking again. We were onboard 50+ days and no way was I going to put up with that crap.
