Can someone tell me about the smoking area on the Noordam by the rear pool?  Does the smoke get blown out and affect a much larger area?

The smoke certainly travels beyond the confines of the designated area, but the extent to which it does varies with the number of smokers puffing away at any given time. We've simply learned to avoid the Sea View Bar area completely.

Thanks, I was afraid that was the situation.

Depends a lot on the speed and direction of the wind.

I would assume the smoking area would not affect the rest of the ship while underway ... isn't that why they put it aft?

You know what they say about assuming something.  I’m sure that’s the plan but it doesn’t work very well on the Rotterdam.

The Aerodynamics of the aft pool area where the smoke does some very odd things depending on wind direction and where the smokers are standing.  Was on deck 10 above on Westerdamn during sail and any shift in the breeze could bring all the scent and 2nd had smoke up into our faces.  We just moved to another spot until it changed again. Surface dynamics and such.

Bonfires are only allowed in Neptune Suites on Pinnacle class ships. Kindling is included in the Have It All package.😉

Good to know - I thought it was Pinnacle Suite only. I will tell DH he can unpack the kindling.

That's what I call the wife's shoe bag/suitcase, as she likes to have lots of options.  🙄

Are bonfires allowed in the staterooms?  We like a nice evening bonfire.  Does HAL provide kindling?

No, but the Oak Room on the Noordam - designed as smoking lounge (where you can't smoke anymore) - has a beautiful fireplace. The woman who claims to be allergic to purified water 🤔 and can only drink spring water, is also allergic to wood. So, kindling has been banned. 🙄

I think that woman should soak her kindling in purified water.

According to HAL's website, the Oak Room on Noordam does currently allow smoking.

For the comfort of all of our guests, all staterooms (cabins), showrooms and most other indoor areas are designated non-smoking. No smoking of any kind will be permitted on any stateroom verandah.

Designated Smoking Areas

Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Oosterdam, Westerdam, Zuiderdam

  • Sea View Bar area
  • Oak Room (Noordam only, including cigar and pipe smoking)

Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam, Rotterdam

  • Sea View Bar area
  • Casino-smoking is allowed in designated areas for active players only and only when outside of 12NM from the Netherlands

Volendam, Zaandam

  • Sea View Bar area
  • Casino-smoking is allowed in designated areas for active players only and only when outside of 12NM from the Netherlands
  • Sports Deck, outside Crow's Nest

Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed.

Electronic cigarettes are not permitted in staterooms or in other public areas of the ship other than designated smoking areas.

Any guest who smokes inside staterooms or on verandahs in violation of our policy will be charged a US$250 cleaning fee per day of violation and will risk being removed from the ship for repeated violations.

Holland America Line reserves the right at any time to modify the smoking policy onboard or alter the locations where smoking is permissible.

Restatement

the website gibberish is always superseded by the cruise contract.  The current contract states:

No Guest under the age of 21 may purchase, possess or consume alcohol on board during the Cruise. No Guest under the age of 18 shall be permitted to engage in any gaming activities on board any vessel or to purchase cigarettes or tobacco products. On some sailings the minimum age for alcohol is under 21 and each Guest agrees to abide by whatever alcohol age restriction is in place on the vessel during the Guest’s cruise. Indoor areas on board the vessels are non-smoking and smoking is only permitted in designated sections. Outdoor smoking areas are clearly posted throughout the vessel. Smoking is prohibited in Guest staterooms and on balconies. Violations to the onboard smoking policy will result in a $250 cleaning fee for each occurrence, which will be charged to Your stateroom account. Repeated violations may result in You being disembarked prior to the end of the Cruise without any refund and at Your cost. The use of electronic cigarettes, personal vaporizers, or electronic nicotine delivery systems is allowed within the confines of the Guest's stateroom (balcony not included) and within designated smoking areas only.

You are correct.

However, remember the adage - "Don't believe everything you read on the internet." (especially HAL's website) 🚬

Exactly.  The website is fraught with errors.  The cruise contract is the only document you can hold them to.
