Do you remember when cars had ashtrays and cigarette lighters in the doors of the back seats?  Wow, times have changed.

Oh yes! I flew 5 days a week from Culver City to Yuma in an old F27 Fairchild and thr engineers would bring their coffee mugs and cigarettes onboard. The ashtrays were overflowing by the time we got to Yuma.

funny ashes over the balcony.jpg

This happened to us on the Celebrity Solstice last December.  I contacted the front desk who sent up security to investigate and collect the evidence in the form of cigarette butts. It continued to happen so security came again, a more senior guy.  He gave me the impression that he had a good idea who the culprits were.  I’m not sure what happened to the smokers but the butts and ashes stopped.

I have been cruising for over 20 years (12 times with Holland America).  I have a husband who smokes.  I do not.  I'm sure as generations  come and go there will be no smoking but the fact is, in the 1960's everyone smoked.  And not everyone has been able to quit.  If the non smokers had their way, I would never be able to cruise again, or I could if I left my husband at home...not happening.  Holland America's policy seems fair and I have never smelled smoke on a balcony.  As for Casino smoke...you really don't have to pass through it.  There are many ways to get around a ship.  It's also not necessary for smokers to walk out the Sea View deck door on the smoking side so that they can make an issue of the smoke smell, waving their hands and complaining.  The sheltered (usually port side?) is non smoking with its own entrance.  Now shall we talk about perfume?  THAT's something that should be banned.  Perfume is hugely offensive to most migraine/cluster sufferers yet I continue to have women on cruise ships knock me flat the with the massive dousing of perfume they have undertaken.  If we had to solve everything to everyone's like, there would probably be no cruising and what a shame that would be.  We can all agree to disagree, I guess.

Sure, why not start a new thread about perfume, because this is the

I don't see where the poster even remotely suggested starting a new thread about perfume. They were simply making a point in comparing the effects of heavy perfume on some people's health, with the effects of smoking on people's health.
A completely valid point in this 'all smoking discussions' thread (IMHO).

I suggested starting a new thread, because this thread is supposed to be about smoking.  Plain & simple.

Clearly you missed my point.  There are MANY offensive smells on cruise ships that bother many people for different reasons but not all of them can be totally eliminated.

And their comment was completely relevant in the context of this thread, plain and simple. No need for a new thread..

This is just so WRONG.  Science has proven that their were no purple or green dinosaurs. 🙃

Now there's conflicting information on Holland's site about smoking.

From site FAQ's (link: Frequently Asked Questions (hollandamerica.com) on page 10:

E-cigarettes are permitted in staterooms, otherwise only in designated smoking areas.

Yet if you go here (link: Know Before You Go (hollandamerica.com) it says:

Electronic cigarettes are not permitted in staterooms or in other public areas of the ship other than designated smoking areas.

Calling HAL's customer service I also got two different answers.

The cruise contract says two things, this contract supersedes anything else written anywhere and two,  vaping is allowed inside the confines of the state room.  Who knew? I certainly did not.

hint - search document for “smoking”

Good Catch!

Truth be told, it would be nearly impossible to detect if someone had been vaping in their cabin.  Unlike the smoke from a cig, vapor dissipates within a few seconds as it evaporates. No ash telltale to indicate a smoker and no risk of fire.

If one is using a flavored vape, the slight hint of the flavor might be detected within a few minutes, but it could have easily been air freshener or someone eating an orange.

Hopefully the vapor doesn't set off the fire alarm or sprinkler.

🤷‍♀️. I would hope someone who has real life experience might chime in.  I am not a smoker just simply curious.

It sounds like you doubt me.  😅   Yes, vaping can set off optical or ionization sensors but not heat sensors.

No, I wonder if it is truly allowed.  If I was going to vape I would bring a copy of the contract with me.

My son always puts a shower cap over the smoke detector in a hotel room when he vapes (only when he's actually in the room). I don't know if that's because he's had an incident, or just to be on the safe side.

Wow - A thousand posts . Nuts actually .

My first cruise was just 12 years ago and it was a different world cruise ship smoking wise.

There was smoking everywhere ! Even in the non-smoking areas, the smoke rolled in .

I remember so much stench on our balcony that we were chased indoors , pillows that smelled and a piano bar we couldn't tolerate .

A here we are . Smoking allowed in very very few places on board . We are thrilled .

Yes we would be happy if there was a complete smoking ban but the situation is so so much better .It's hard to complain but some will .
