The Niew Amsterdam which I just got off on June 4 has a smoke free casino. It was a pleasure being in the casino.

Can confirm. Boarded on June 4. Also, barely a wiff of smoke from the outdoor smoking areas.

An nary a thought anywhere here for the crew that have to endure an unsafe workplace.

Probably because it's their choice, unlike a paying passenger that has to put up with it.

Are casino workers given a choice if they want to work in a smoking section or not?  Perhaps some type of hazard pay, as it is clearly an unhealthy and toxic environment.

They have a choice on whether or not to work for a cruise company that allows smoking on their ships.

For those that do smoke, they get the benefits of the hits without paying for ciggies!

Nearly every large ship cruise line has smoking casinos on their ships...Celebrity and some  HAL ships are the main exceptions. Not always a realistic choice if you want to earn a decent living and support family back home.

But perhaps a necessary choice if one deems it important enough to assured of employment in a 100% smoke-free environment.

Let's be fair to all. It's time HAL designated a smoking room indoors for smokers with proper ventilation as they do on other ships (ie. Oceania) .......

Was on Oceania Nautica in January. They have two smoking areas - an outdoor and indoor. But the indoor area is limited to cigarettes only. I enjoy a cigar. The outdoor deck was covered, but in cool weather, it is less enjoyable. Fortunately, for me, it is not "an addiction" as others have called it here, and I can just not smoke. But part of the enjoyment of being on vacation and on a cruise ship is smoking a cigar - though I do prefer being outdoors. On the newer Princess Ships, they allow smoking of all kinds (or they did as late as 2021) both in the designated outdoor area and in the humidor room.

We think we want a balcony cabin mid ship, rear-ish on the Nieuw Statendam.

Any suggestions as to locations and levels that will not tend to have drifting smoke from outside smoking areas?  Or maybe it would be a lot easier to state which balcony cabin areas to avoid.

Thanks.

I think I just answered my own question. Correct me if I'm wrong:  The only designated outside smoking area on the Nieuw Statendam is at the aft Seaview Pool area.  That'll certainly help me with cabin choice.

You are correct. The smoking area is on starboard side, by the aft pool. IIRC, most of the area is covered.

You are correct. And on any given morning or evening, you'll see my DH out there enjoying a cigar w/his coffee & Bailey's - tell him I said "hi" and I'm hungry...

While Celebrity Casinos are smoke free, they are currently doing a test of allowing Vaping on two ships casinos (Equinox and Summit) to determine if they will go fleetwide with this. The testing ends on August 19th. There has been a very long CC discussion about this with a lot of opposition by CC members.

Most (all?) major cruise line included vaping as they established smoking bans. To start allowing vaping now is a truly regressive step, particularly given the ever-increasing realization within the medical community of the extent to which vaping threatens both the user and those exposed second hand. Hopefully Celebrity's testing will include a thorough review of the medical evidence.

Sadly, you have to wonder if a couple of the people who can pull those levers in Miami are vapers themselves.

We are seasoned cruisers but in the last 15 years have done mostly Celebrity. Since it appears that they are modifying their policy about smoking, allowing vaping in the casino, we are looking at other cruise lines. I’m having a difficult time getting a definitive answer from the HAL website so I thought maybe you guys could help. Are their actually some ships with non smoking casinos or just non smoking nights like it was 20 years ago when we cruised with Holland? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, there are non smoking casinos.  Zuiderdam, Oosterdam, Westerdam, Noordam.

The information is right in the “Know Before You Go” on the HAL site.  No need to call.  Here is a screen shot of the pertinent page for you.

I appreciate you saving me from the 36 pages of discussions about it, lol. I just needed to know what ships and I kept getting different answers. Thank you!

That's a difficult question to answer.  Smoking is officially prohibited on all Holland America balconies, but it's been our experience that not everyone thinks this applies to them.  Each and every balcony we've had on HAL, we've smelled smoke coming from other balconies.  It definitely downgrades the value of a balcony cabin for us.
