Freestyle dining dressing??

We have sailed on other lines and husband and teenager son always dress appropriately. This is our first time on NCL doing freestyle dining. Can they wear shorts and polo type shirts in MDR at night?

Absolutely. That's what I wore every night on my Escape cruise this past July.

I believe some of the ships recommend long pants and collared shits for men in the aft main dining rooms (usually the most formal of the MDRs on any NCL ship). But I would say, in general, NCL is pretty lax in enforcing dress codes even in the restaurants that have them. Saw a guy in shorts and his companion in a t-shirt and baseball cap (though he did have long pants) at Ocean Blue on the Bliss for dinner this past Friday.

As far as the big ships go, the only MDR that requires long pants is the Manhattan Room on the Epic. You’re fine with nice shorts and a polo shirt in all the others.

Shorts are allowed everywhere except Le Bistro and Ocean Blue (or the equivalent) which are speciality restaurants plus the aft dining room on most ships. Some ships, mainly the newer ones, don't have that restriction in the aft dining room, but if you plan to eat there then I would recommend having an alternative as you may not find out for sure until after you board.
