Smoking in cafes/restaurants?

Recommended Posts

We will be in Holland for a week starting Friday and plan to do lots of touring as well as enjoying some local specialties.  Someone commented that when they were last in Amsterdam (approx 5 years ago) the cafes and eateries were filled with smokers and almost unbearable for non-smokers to enjoy.  We're so used to non-smoking in all public venues that it never occurred to me that smoking would still be allowed in restaurants and cafes in Holland.   Has this changed recently or should we expect lots of smoking in eating establishments?

Smoking cigarettes in pretty much banned in restaurants except in the Coffeshops (cannabis).

Most European countries have banned smoking inside. The number of smokers has rapidly declined to the point that you notice one when they light up in the street.

Vapers, however, are the new nuisance.

So cigarettes (tobacco) are not banned in coffee shops... cannabis is allowed or not..not sure about the parenthesis?  Sorry but I'm confused about your response.  Thank you.  We don't smoke anything....well except for meat for dinner lol

Coffeeshops are licensed to sell marihuana in small quantities. A Dutch coffeehouse not serving cannabis is called a koffiehuis or café, though the latter term can also refer to a bar.

Barwick Cruiser.  We were in Amsterdam last July 2018) and we found the restaurants to be smoke free if you were indoors.  The outdoor seating is another story.  Tables are close together and just when you think you found a table on the fringe with no one next to you at a very early dinner time another guest would sit right next to you and pull out their cigarettes.

Beware of bicycles they are fast and plentiful!  We are fast and we nearly got hit!!

Thanks, guess we'll eat indoors unless we can find some takeaway for a park bench or similar?  We do have a lovely garden patio at our airbnb so we'll plan our al fresco dining for there!

Have heard many warnings of the fast bicycles..can't wait to see for ourselves, safely from the sidewalk of course!!

No, vaping isn't generally allowed in cafes, bars and restaurants but most have smoking areas outside. Europe is  much more anti-smoking than the US IMO.

Still have a ways to go I guess...we don't even allow smoking on patios or in playgrounds or parks.  Hopefully one day it's like that everywhere!
