abisha Posted February 9, 2020 #1 Share Posted February 9, 2020 Hi...looking for cabin recommendations for the Gem on deck 5 for Ocean View with picture window. Cabins are either under the French restaurant or under the bars. Want to know which one might be quieter. I am thinking under the French restaurant which would have limited hours (for dinner) vs. the bars (all day). Thanks,
hladygirl Posted February 10, 2020 #2 Share Posted February 10, 2020 Under the French restaurant.
zqvol Posted February 10, 2020 #3 Share Posted February 10, 2020 Neither is going to make a lot of noise. The decks are pretty sound proof unless someone is dragging chairs around. The to location is to be midship, because forward you will hear the anchors, thrusters and line handling equipment as you dock, and in the stern you hear docking equipment and the engines. Rare BostonGal35 Posted February 10, 2020 #4 Share Posted February 10, 2020 honestly, check out the obstructed windows on deck 8. we find them a great value and you are steps from osheehans.
Rare mking8288 Posted February 10, 2020 #5 Share Posted February 10, 2020 Based on "our" collective / personal experiences on the Dawn, Jewel, Star & the Gem (4X) with OV ... if you are fine with Deck 5, midship by the elevators, even the ones directly under Magneta/LeBistro are fine ... they are open for dinner only and except when they need to move chairs, tables for cleaning -hardly hear anything. Port side isn't as busy outside the window with tendering and embarkation/disembarkation activites as you can watch the "live" action outside the big picture windows - as they un/load luggage, transfer pax onto tender boats (that's starboard side). From atrium lobby, it's easy 2 decks down to the cabin, 1 more down to gangway to go ashore - easy to catch elevator to go to pool/sun deck. Most recently, we had a nice OV 3 doors away from elevator, under Magenta MDR starboard side for 8 nights, great location - nicely upgraded winning GTY bid ("OA") from our booked sideway Inside (deck 8 mid, that we originally selected). No inside cabins across from us - just white space/mechanical/ship facilities & storage, etc. - crew members walk by as it's above I-95. Had previously another OV mid/under the corridor below the casino, that was fine too.
abisha Posted February 10, 2020 Author #6 Share Posted February 10, 2020 Thanks for the tips everyone. I should have also included this question: do any of these cabin configurations have the sofa first w/bed by the balcony door upon entering the cabin vs. the bed first and then the sofa by the balcony door. We have a power wheelchair. It really does not take up that much space in comparison to a scooter. We have often booked standard cabins and scooters have been no issue as long as the bed is by the sliding balcony door. Does the Gem have any configurations on Deck 5 where sofa/desk is first upon entering the room?
Rare mking8288 Posted February 10, 2020 #7 Share Posted February 10, 2020 (edited) Not on the Gem/sibling ships - unlike the "Escape" or *.Away/+ class ships. The convertible single sofa/bed is always by the balcony's sliding door, it is going to be a struggle to fit that power wheelchair thru the entry door, the "narrow" passage, past the bathroom into the sleeping/sofa area. AFAIK, none of the standard OV cabin, whether it's deck 4, 5 or 8 - have a sofa, not on the Gem, that I know of. There is a desk on one side and a square table on the opposite side of the wall, and, a round sitting stool (used to be a low back chair) See pix below from Deck 5 - picture window OV (also, where the door for connecting staterooms is situated) Have you spoke or contacted the Access Desk/Special Needs at NCL to discuss this ... they can & should be able to help. However, I recommend checking to see if you can book one of the accessible OV on Deck 8, they are obstructed but much roomier, with room & spacing for the wheelchair or scooter to go inside. There would be enough room inside to store it and get it charged - otherwise, room steward will need to store it nearby in a designated/approved area for charging & overnight - without blocking egress. Stanard balcony and/or oceanview, will NOT give you the tiny extra space needed for a wheelchair, maybe a folding "transport" wheelchair at most, to squeeze thru (generalization applied to the your Gem-specific questions.) If they can notate your reservation and arrange to have the steward move that square table out of the cabin & store it elsewhere during your cruise, then - that (empty) space will work, the 110/220v outlet is next to the TV & refrigerator - assuming the passage into the cabin is workable. Again, reach out to NCL's Access Desk. Edited February 10, 2020 by mking8288
abisha Posted February 10, 2020 Author #8 Share Posted February 10, 2020 In looking at your pictures, it looks like there is enough space in the oceanview setup. The wheelchair seat comes off, and we could easily roll the base either under the bed or table or desk and the seat folds up and could go anywhere else such as in the closet or also under the bed. Thanks for sharing those pics.
Rare mking8288 Posted February 11, 2020 #9 Share Posted February 11, 2020 With the "regular" OV on Deck 5 - if there's just 2 in the room, one with wheelchair - it is possible to move the beds together against the other side's long wall, making more space/room for the motorized wheelchair - ask the room steward for help to do the setup, in addition to getting that square table put a way elsewhere. Special Needs can note your reservations & help request in advance, then - you will have more room to move around. I trust you know that the bathroom/shower is one step up/down in that short corridor. These 2 pix from the Gem's obstructed, accessible OV "sideway" cabin on Deck 8 - there are only 8 of them. Contact NCL Access Desk to ask ...
abisha Posted February 11, 2020 Author #10 Share Posted February 11, 2020 Having the table removed would be perfect solution. The power chair would easily fit in that corner. thanks!
