Help please!! Confused about Discovery Princess Alaska Cruise mask policy?

Here’s the thing. The northbound/southbound cruises were mask optional at first, then the outbreaks happened, and it started affecting crew and filling up quarantine rooms on the ship, so Princess restarted the mask requirement for those cruises. This was all just a month or two ago.

Right now, Discovery Princess is mask optional.  But if the numbers start trending the wrong way, the cruise contract gives them the right to require masks any time, and the recent north/southbound policy reversal shows they totally will do it.

So if wearing the mask is truly a deal breaker, cancel while you still can.  Because if they change to mask required before (or during) your cruise, you won’t have a choice and you won’t get a refund.

Just off Discovery yesterday, and masking was about what I expected.  Most didn't.

We wore N95, Kn95 everywhere except inside our cabin.  Balcony door open much of the time.

If room service came, I put on my mask to answer the door, took the tray & they didn't come in.

I avoided many crowded venues, including Main dining rooms.

Didn't make any dining reservations cuz we didn't know IF we wanted to go?

Only ate in there twice, and it was near closing time when hardly anyone was there.

Had one Specialty dining, SurLemur.  Only about half full, which felt fine.

But when we weren't actually eating?  We put our masks back on.

Buffet was fine during off times, and we either ate outside, or near opening doors to outside.

I took the stairs many more times than I actually wanted, due to full elevators or guests

with wheelchairs needing them.

When the unmasked tried to squish inside?  I Got Off immediately.

Towards the end of the week, much more Coughing heard everywhere.  Big surprise.

Seemed they didn't test, and didn't care.

Couple elder men were on shuttle to downtown Victoria, hacking away not even trying to cover.

One woman walking around inside the casino, looked Very sick and she was coughing Everywhere.

And Princess has been allowing smoking inside the casino even on Formal nights!?  Why?

Smoke was Bad.  Many were just smoking inside and Not playing.

So were we strict about our masking?  YES

Was it a very different cruise than a year ago?  YES  Ship is Full now.  Not the same.

Would I go onboard Unmasked?  Only if I don't mind catching covid.

Did we personally have a good time?  Yes

I am sailing Princess next, but I just finished a Cunard cruise, where masks were required...... Crew constantly reminded passengers to "mask up" and use sanitizer.

And therein is the difference with Princess.

A number of posts from different Princess cruises have said that when masks were mandatory, the crew would not ask non-conforming passengers to mask up.

Are you a better person because you wear a mask

I chose to follow the mandates that were promised by Princess because I didn't want to get COVID.

I also choose to wear masks to help stop the spread of disease---for the greater good and to, hopefully, to help keep numbers down enough to allow cruising to continue.

I suppose--yes, I think I am a more considerate person because I did not knowingly walk around with COVID, not masking and consciously spreading the virus to my fellow passengers.

Well since the CDC is now letting the ships decide for themselves what's appropriate and most people weren't wearing masks when it was suggested, I suspect everything will change back to what it was before Covid began. i.e.- open self service buffet, no mask in show lounge, filled elevators, no masks required when exiting the ship, etc.

I can't foresee the restrictions returning to a full lockdown unless the virus gets out of control.

I still pity the crew that has to wear masks all day long. Maybe that will change also.

Very well said.

We feel same way and did so by masking up along with the crew and others who did so as well.

We brought enough KN95 masks to wear a new Fresh one each day.
