Bad1987 Posted November 8, 2022 #1 Share Posted November 8, 2022 Anyone know if your mariner discount applies to the surcharge items in any of the dining venues. Lobster in dining room or now the second appetizer in pinnacle? Sailing in January on Nieuw Statendam
Rare FlaMariner Posted November 8, 2022 #2 Share Posted November 8, 2022 I see nothing in the Mariner Society benefits lists for "discount on surcharge items in dining"..... Here is a link to the Mariner benefits: https://www.hollandamerica.com/en_US/mariner-society.html
Rare albingirl Posted November 8, 2022 #3 Share Posted November 8, 2022 Discount on the upcharge. Made me laugh. But, why not ask?
DaveOKC Posted November 8, 2022 #4 Share Posted November 8, 2022 I doubt it. I do not recall one on the Pinnacle lobster addition earlier this year. Besides, they charge you the full service charge on 50% off discounts such as wine package.
Bad1987 Posted November 8, 2022 Author #5 Share Posted November 8, 2022 There seems to be so much talk about all the upcharges now in the dining venues so was wondering how it is handled. Specialty dining receive a mariner discountvsobthought I would ask if anyone has knowledge of it being applied.

Dave, am I understanding correctly...a $200 wine package discounted at 50% has a service charge on the $200
WannaSea Posted November 8, 2022 #7 Share Posted November 8, 2022 In the volatile world of tipping etiquette (please don't throw rocks), it's not uncommon to tip based on the full price when you get complementaries or discounts. Like a comped dinner at a casino or happy hour discounts on appetizers at a bar. Some do, some don't. No choice on the HAL packages.

SilvertoGold Posted November 8, 2022 #9 Share Posted November 8, 2022 We have been charged consistently. If package is $100 : 18% of $100 = $18 + 50% of $100 = $50 So $18 + $50 = $68 charged. Never a mistake!
Florida_gal_50 Posted November 9, 2022 #10 Share Posted November 9, 2022 There was a time that you received a discount on the upcharge amount. No need to make remarks about it. The last time I was on the koningsdam they said they don’t do that anymore. People have reported that they have gotten it unless they are confused about what discount they have gotten. I emailed the Mariners society and never got an answer. I called on another item so I asked. They said it’s not a thing but I know for sure I’ve gotten it in the past. It was never on the mdr items. Just the specialty restaurants.
Bad1987 Posted November 9, 2022 Author #11 Share Posted November 9, 2022 Thanks everyone for your insight. So i understand the charge now in pinnacle for instance...My order would have an additional $7 charge. A little surprised but as long as I know. Jumbo shrimp cocktail Heart of romaine Caesar salad Filet Mignon Creme Brulee Cheers everyone

I specifically asked why the refund on my statement (bought winepackage before the cruise) was exactly half the price including the 18%. Guest service confirmed this is the way they do it now. (Other cruises this year we had the HIA package and I simply did not check our statement whenever we had extra's.....).

happyglobetrotter Posted November 9, 2022 #15 Share Posted November 9, 2022 As confirmed on a previous cruise by the Pinnacle manager. The Mariners' discount is for the specialty dinner regular cost (charge), not applicable to any upcharge, extra charge or surcharge.
