AMAZON RIVER CRUISE

fb0075:

Been there during our-extended adventure on "The Greatest River in the World" during May-June 2017 when aboard Navigator.

Due to Doctor's (Tropical Disease Specialist) orders based on review of my medical history going back 50 years--specifically Malaria--spouse and I were very, very circumspect as to participating in any of the numerous off-the-ship excursions offered during a 10-day segment of that nearly-four week cruise.  This was while transiting first upstream from the Atlantic; then, back downstream while on that massive River.

Altogether, a wonderful once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Several excursions would have been with local contractors offering a variety of adventures requiring boarding boats and visiting tributaries.  We did NOT participate in any.  But, noted others that did.  Cannot recall Regent providing any rain gear.  However, recommendations were given--on a constant basis--while onboard and in "Passages" as to what to wear to cover exposed skin.  This related to potential sunburn, as well as bites from numerous voracious insects.  Not-just those pesky mosquitoes.

I posted on this matter way-back in that day on CC sites as to personal experience while preparing, medically, with needed inoculations and medications.  Such enabled being able to enjoy the cruise, with no-ill effects before, during, or after.

Numerous other CC'ers in addition to self, commented on our experiences while transiting The River.  So, expect others who did participate in off-the-ship adventures--some of which would be expected to necessitate additional gear--will provide their input.

We have done an Amazon river cruise in Equador, not with Regent but on a small boat Anaconcda, we went in March, we wore hiking shoes and took rain ponchos , only rained once during the week but what a downpour !!

didn’t get bitten , I took vitamin B1 2 weeks before you go and all the time you are away, this really works as I always used to get bitten, plus mosquito bands and bug spray.

it was cool in mornings

Answer is NO, Regent does not supply any gear. Only thing I took were waterproof shoe covers. They proved great in Manaus and on Devil's Island which were both rainy days. I also always take a small umbrella, because the Regent supplied umbrellas are too big for me!

Only bugs we saw November 2018 were the moths on deck in the mornings.

Did not take Malaria pills, because they can have a side effect of bad after taste in your mouth, and I never want that to happen on a Regent cruise!

Ponchos were the best thing we packed for our Amazon river adventure.  If you read the excursion descriptions they will tell you any special clothing etc you may need. Regent has umbrellas but they are too long for me to carry without poking someone, so we had small collapsible ones.  We did not go jungle trekking so did not need anything, but those excursions recommend some kind of rubber boot and long sleeve tops etc.

GoArmy!, would you send links to your preparations?  We are doing this cruise in March and I want to be sure we take all measures.  We do have appointment with travel clinic next week.  Thank you.  Barbara

O.K.  Hunt completed.

Results are contained in Mariner and Navigator Roll Calls.   And, another comment on this General Thread.

1.  Mariner Roll Call, Page 6.  Title: "November 17, 2017. Radiant Amazon".  This regarded a Regent Amazon segment following the one we took aboard Navigator--May-June, 2017. (See below.)  You can follow-along on various aspect of our experience(s) beginning at Post #56. That initial posting was published by another cruiser, but is relevant to mine that followed.  My comments as to contemporary observations included more than medical history.  Peruse at your leisure.  Page after page.

2.  Navigator Roll Call, Page 7.  Title:  "May 23, 2017 Amazon Adventure".  This is a long Roll Call, which, like most, wanders off here and there way-off into the weeds.  But, persevere.   Entries 82, 147, 228, 245, 247, for example, more-or-less relate to you inquiry centered on preparation for an Amazon adventure on "The Greatest River in the World!"

Finally:  During this quest, came across that other very-relevant observation contained on this Main Thread.

3.  Page 145.  Topic was "Yellow Fever Shots & Malaria Pills for Panama Canal Cruise."  Yep, I know, Panama Canal.  However, dispositive were comments on page 2, from Gilly posted on May 31, 2017; followed by June 1, 2017 response from flossie.  Reinforces the MAIN POINT--below.

What one reads on CC postings from other fellow travelers on matters touching on medical situations are just-that: comments.  There is no substitute for personal consultation(s) with one's medial professional(s).

Pcardad:

So--that is one species down; and 24,999 insect species to go which one might encounter while transit on The River and its tributaries.  The 25,000 figure comes from a Naturalist Historian.  And, he was probably being conservative.

Due to tropical climate and Natural Selection:  everything is oversized.

how do i view old roll calls ie navigator may 2017?

Unfortunately they are archived (I just looked for our November 2018 for you all to read), but if you find a link to one of the archived ones in another thread it will still work.
@Host Dan is there a way to find archived Roll Calls?

All:  Reference my Posts #7 and #8--

What I did was:

Information retrieved by going to each ship's Roll Call.  Each Call consists of 19 archived pages.  The oldest Calls for both ships date from 2007.  Those are on Page 19.

Simply move forward in time by reviewing the lists of individual entries (date sensitive) on each page.  That will lead you to the right time frame.  I provided the Roll Call Titles for ones relevant to this inquiry.

Hope this helps.

Host Dan may have another method.

And others opining on this aspect--

Gauge from fb0075's #16 response success in accessing previous Roll Calls related to Amazon River going back five + years.  There are so-many other cruisers with pertinent recollections.

I was trying to concentrate on the medical aspect of common-sense preparation for an extensive excursion on "The Greatest River in the World".

fb0075:  Again, happy readings.  Enjoy your upcoming cruise.

Thanks @GOARMY. For some reason when I tried to go from newest to oldest, I couldn't find our Nov. 2018 Amazon roll call, but when I went the other way, voila!

So for those going on Amazon cruise, here is the info we shared in November 2018 (including Passport Health info and vaccination info at the time).
