Transatlantic Caribbean Cruise from UK

Hi. Novice cruiser. Looking at a P and O cruise in October from Southampton to Madeira and on to and 6 Caribbean islands, flying back from Barbados. Very reasonable price. A bit concerned about the weather that time of year, chance of hurricanes, heavy rain etc. Anyone have any experience at that time of year, crossing the Atlantic etc. What happens if there is a hurricane? Do the ships divert, do they get plenty of warning, is that possible? Thanks for any insight. Only been on two cruises, Carnival out of Miami 5 years ago, and a couple of weeks ago with Celebrity, ten night Eastern Caribbean out of Miami. Really enjoyed, Celebrity very nice, Carnival more for family than couples I found.

You are out of the official TRS season, and yes they get plenty of warning of any 'Oh Nasty weather, and yes the information will be passed on to the passengers,

 

As for 'weather' ... multiple variables ... look out of the window is the best bet

Hi Rob, suggest you repost on the P and O UK section of the boards.  You will find lots of comments from people who have done this cruise last winter. the one you are looking is likely to be repositioning probably as they operate fly cruise out of Barbados during the winter.

 

there may also be reviews of the ship and the cruise in the reviews section. 

 

We have been to the Caribbean from Southampton, not with P and O, and absolutely loved it; there is a point when you first see flying fish alongside the ship because you are far enough south and its getting warmer. but note there are a lot of sea days crossing the Atlantic, so if you are not a fan of ship life you may prefer to fly to Caribbean as you have done before.

October is still very much inside hurricane season so "expect the unexpected" is what to bear in mind, and maybe go with an open mind in the expectation that your itinerary may have to be tweaked if weather conditions change.  Sailings in that period are often less expensive, but they are less expensive for a reason.

Sorry, the 'normal ' season ... technically the official hurricane season runs between 1 June and 30 November but the period of highest concern is just between mid-August and early October. IMHO you'll be unlucky there is anything about so late.

Hi Rob- we used to do the crossing with P&O to the Caribbean (and back again) in winter, but not in October, and as people are saying, the captain always tried to miss the bad weather whenever possible. Once we circled the Azores to miss a storm, although it was still a bit rocky, but I quite enjoy that. The ships are sturdy and well able to deal with any kind of weather.

The sea days were always filled with all kinds of activities- lectures, films, games, choirs so we have always been kept occupied.

Because the October transit it often arranged around half term, you might find there are many families on board, but the children's clubs will be in action.

Hi Rob and welcome to Cruise Critic.  Your TA should be very enjoyable especially once you have cleared the English Channel and head South by South West.  The farther south the better the sea conditions and temperatures.  Your time in the Caribbean should be ideal.  Stop worrying and start planning to have a great adventure.
