Wheelchair for NYC Embarkation/Disembarkation

To make life easier for DH (and therefore me) I want to order a wheelchair for embarkation/disembarkation in NYC.  Is this something I do when I get to the port, or something I need to reserve in advance?  Any info will be appreciated.

TIA

I recommend requesting it in advance.  It will be on your e-docs when you print them out.  We have found that NCL is very good with the wheelchair assist.  Sometimes you may need to wait a bit until one becomes available.  But it definitely makes getting off and on the ship much easier for anyone with mobility issues.  DH doesn't use a wheelchair on a day to day basis, but has trouble with walking a longer distance especially up an incline, so the assist is greatly appreciated.  I usually give the pusher a small tip.

I think it needs to be at least 45 days in advance. Fill out the form at https://ncl.secure.force.com/AccessDeskForm/

That isn't the case but it may make things easier.  My friend didn't do the access request.  He just checked-in (this was Manhattan) and went to the handicapped area.  From there, he was wheeled aboard.  Disembarking, he just had to show up at a certain place/time; on Joy it was early at the Local.  He also got wheeled off at the various ports.  He can walk but has some back issues.  It's a fairly long, serpentine, schlep so why torture yourself?

I sprained my ankle in Naples the day before our cruise.  When embarkation staff saw my ace bandage and crutch, they rushed a chair over to me.  Pusher stayed with me through the whole check-in process (took us to special services desk) and aboard, dropping me off right before the scan-bing-security kiosk.  Definitely worth the $5 tip!
