How to get to Kiel Port

Recommended Posts

https://www.bahn.com/en

or Trainline app for example

i would go by train. it is about 70 Minutes train ride.

with the Link you can search.

( Hbf = hauptbahnhof means Central station for example Hamburg hbf to Kiel hbf )

in Kiel there are three different Terminals, two are in walking distance and one is far away ( but then MSC should offer a shuttle from the train station to the Terminal )

We traveled from Hamburg to Kiel by train. Then took the MSC shuttle to the ‘new’ MSC terminal at the ferry port outside of town.  Never again. We were doing a back to back Baltic/Norway. We were thus taking a lot of heavier clothes. The weekend trains were packed local commuters with no reserved seating or baggage check. I mean ‘all’ passengers had multiple pieces of luggage. We literally had bags on our laps for the full ride. When we did get to the Kiel station MSC has zero signage for the shuttle. It is out the station to the right on a side street. In the future we will hire a sufficiently large car for the trip from Hamburg to Kiel. For our return trip to Hamburg the Yacht Club Concierge arranged a private car as they knew we did not likely have a great experience on the train.

If you are sailing Yacht Club, a special note if you do take the train then MSC shuttle. Let the clerk selling tickets for the shuttle know you are Yacht Club. They loaded our luggage on the shuttle bus. Otherwise, your luggage will be loaded with all the others onto a truck arriving at times unknown.

As always, others experience may have been more pleasant.

Definitely the train from Hamburg Hbf to Kiel Hbf. Many of the trains are ICE high speed trains.

Then take a taxi from the ranks outside to the Ostuferhafen cruise terminal where MSC operates from. As noted above, it's not the ones within walking distance from the train station.

In Europe MSC sells transfers to the ship but this has not been available from MSC Americas. But if you can find the MSC shuttle bus, they'll sell you a ticket to the bus there at the station. But I think if you're paying for two or more bus passengers, might as well use a meter taxi.

When we got off the train at Kiel Hbf, there was a MSC rep in the area where all the tracks & train platforms end and you go into the station building itself. If no one is there, turn right and go into the shopping area of the station and take the escalator down to the ground level. You'll see the bus queue and ticket seller for the bus down there.

It is worth a mention that Hamburg does have also other long distance railway stations, so if your accomodation is closer to those, you probably should book your journey starting from there rather than the central station.
