Can you snorkel form the shore at the beach near the ship port? Is it any good?

What is there to do in the area if you simply don't leave the port area?

Mahogany Bay has a very comprehensive website with a map. https://www.mahoganybaycc.com/

As far as snorkeling goes, Good is subjective to your past experiences. If you have been to West Bay, then it is doubtful Mahogany Bay would entertain you. But if you are new to snorkeling, perhaps it will. I have not done so, but that said, if you go to the end of the beach at the end of the dock, there is some sealife to witness there.

If you use the search here, you might find more information about snorkeling.

I have been to Mahogany Bay several times. Walk down to the beach and then go all the way to the pier you can see past the cabanas. from the end of it, it is a short swim to the reef. As usual, results will vary based on water conditions and weather. I have found it to be pretty good the three times I have been there. Yes, there are better reefs, but for the price (free if you have your own gear) it's hard to beat.

Tabayana beach (west Bay) - snorkeling -is A+ for the Caribbean

Mahogany bay - Snorkeling near pier by cabanas - is C-    (but I would still do it for a while if we were staying at the port for the day instead of heading out on an excursion.
