Are Carnival gift cards only redeemable on bookings with Carnival or can I use a Carnival gift card to pay a fare on Expedia?

 

I'm planning a Carnival cruise and I want to pay for it with Carnival gift cards.  Do I have to book directly with the cruise line to use Carnival gift cards?  Or can I book with any travel service and use Carnival gift cards?  Thanks.

I am almost certain that you have to book through Carnival.

 

A gift card in most cases is basically cash that you can only spend with a certain merchant.  In this case, the merchant is Carnival.  If you book through Expedia, Expedia is the merchant.

Possibly if you book the cruise then go to your account on carnival, you should be able to pay the remainder.

I have booked a cruise through Carnival and given them the Carnival gift card # over the phone for payment.

Expedia is a travel agent, it is up to them as to the payment methods they will accept. I don't think there is any reason why they can't take Carnival gift cards, but again it's up to them.

I used gift cards on AARP’s contracted Expedia website. They log into their payment portal with Carnival to enter the gift cards. It’s cumbersome for them, but if you are persistent it is both allowed and possible.

I did for my first cruise in 2017. It is easier if you are booked directly with Carnival, though.

I book with a 3rd party travel agency (NOT a Carnival PVP), and I am able to use Carnival gift cards for payments.  I just have to call the TA and they have to apply them for me.  Little annoying, but the savings is worth it, plus all the OBC I get for using a TA.
