Grandparents trying to flake out of booking with only them two, advice on substituting?

Their cruse line, their rules.

Just be prepared for any check in difficulties.

I have noticed that cruise lines seem to copy procedures that other lines may have in place to avoid problems, especially ones that affect the bottom line.

In this case, I have noticed that some are copying MSC's policies about no shows and changes in reservations.

Yes, we're able to change the guest.

But now I'm being told that if the other person doesn't show up, the substitute might not be able to get on? Is that normal? Are they actually able to enforce that at the port??

Sorry to hear about your situation. Celebrity will expect one of the original persons booked on the reservation to sail. I am not sure if they will enforce that or not. Who told you that the sub. may be denied boarding? Celebrity?? And yes, they can deny boarding at the port.

From the T&C:

17. TRANSFERS AND ASSIGNMENTS:
This Ticket Contract may not be assigned, sold or otherwise transferred by the Passenger. Among other things, this means that the Passenger cannot sell or transfer this Ticket Contract to someone else, and Carrier shall not be liable to the Passenger or any other person in possession of a Ticket Contract for honoring or refunding such Ticket Contract when presented by such other person.

You can read it on the MSC website in "Terms and Conditions."

OK. I read it.  It sounds pretty standard to me.  I'm not sure what you think is different.  No refund for no shows - one person from the original booking must remain on the booking. How is this different from Celebrity?

It was my TA, but he went to call to verify and he said that they told him it wouldn't be a problem so I'm glad about that. With that affirmation I'm able to rest easy.

Just happy someone can enjoy the Deluxe Veranda on the new Ascent.

I'm just wondering if your grandparents (and your mother) are fully aware that you are now on the hook for their cruise fare?  Do they understand the financial policies of cruise lines?  Much as I love my family and friends they are all adults and I'm very firm that everyone pay their own way from the very beginning.  When they have to put their own money on the table you will immediately see who is not serious about going.  The opportunities for drama are endless when you make plans and payments for others.

I agree... I have one good friend who i always go with that is one of my best friends for never flaking or telling me the deal. I'm lenient about emergencies and ETC, and I do love treating my family and friends but it's very easy to see who can be a problem or not.

I can see all the stress this has caused you, in your writing, but hopefully, you will find a resolution that can allow you to go forward, putting this all to rest.  Sometimes dealing with family, along with hidden information, makes people crazy especially during the holidays.  A cruise is an excellent way for you to move forward and just know that you didn’t have all the information available to you when making those reservations, but your heart was/is truly in the right place!

Yea, I was feeling quite frantic. I'm able to relax now! Thank you so much for the support 🙂

I asked because I once had a situation with prepaid nonrefundable restaurant reservations treating a brother who decided to not show up. I decided not to ask for reimb b/c of your same concerns. Swallowing a loss like that may have been a lesson I needed not to rely on a guy who had stood us up many times before. Good luck!

Thank you! And I'm terribly sorry that happened to you, I hope you were able to at least enjoy a delicious meal. 💘

All this means is that you can't sell/give the booking to somebody else.  Has no effect on having the cruise line put a different person on the booking.  Generally cruise lines let you change passenger names up until around 5 days before the cruise, as long as one passenger from the original booking remains on the booking.  And unless that person was used for a casino booking rate or something similar they really don't care if that person shows up or not.

That's excellent, these were my initial thoughts as well. I was just starting to get stressed out because I thought it might have been new changes celebrity put out or some hidden rule somewhere! I just absolutely hate putting anyone in the position of not being allowed entry, or any uncomfortable situation. It would truly make me pop a vein if I wasn't allowed to bring at least one person in an already paid for cabin...

In all honesty my mom pushed them to going, when I told her it wasn't a good idea for various reasons, one that you have also listed.

Since they're old she wanted to do a nice thing and also celebrate their retirement... And also hid a very important fact from me that they're deathly afraid of water.🤦‍♀️ (That I just found out RIGHT NOW.)

Your mom needs to put her hand in her pocket for whatever you are left out of pocket as a result of both areas I have highlighted in your post.

Good luck! I hope you are able to relax and enjoy your cruise.

Read it again.

Did you see that after the "no show" is cancelled with a penalty of 100% for that portion of the cabin fare, the remaining passenger can be assessed that portion of the fare (and any other additional solo passenger fare above the cost of a double cabin).

I'm sure you are correct. This is interesting to me, sort of like the step doctrine loophole, and may be very handy. For example, if I am on a cruise with my spouse in a cabin that can accommodate more than two persons, I can drop out and substitute another person. Then we can add someone to the reservation as a third traveler. On the day of travel my wife is a no show and we effectively substituted 2 new passengers. The extra cost would be for the third person in the cabin but that is usually fairly inexpensive and most likely cheeper than cancel for any reason travel insurance. Thanks for pointing this out!

That's not what it says.  If you think MSC actually keeps the booking fee for the no show PLUS charges the person who show up an ADDITIONAL 100% of the fare, you're welcome to your opinion.  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Completely read it again.

And it is not what I think or my opinion,

"In case of a partial Booking cancellation whereby one or more Passengers have cancelled their Cruise Package, leaving one Passenger to occupy the cabin after the cancellation of the other Passenger(s), the remaining Passenger occupying the cabin for single use will be assessed a 100% single surcharge."

I nicely tried to point you to where the MSC information was located even though we are on the Celebrity forum.

I will not try to offer any more explanations.
