Things that once were at P & O but are now… GONE!

Please take a look at the P&O website and quote me a cruise number that shows a balcony for a £100 pppn (£200 per couple). I can’t find one.

A410C - £1,399pp for 19 nights for a balcony cabin, so £73pppn - and that includes flights to Tenerife and back from Malta, so realistically the cruise part itself is around £60pppn.

I just had a quick browse. Plenty of P&O cruises at less than £200 pn for a balcony

I would respectfully suggest that you look again.

Stayed at the PI West Quay for £58 a few weeks ago pre-cruise.

Room only no doubt

No travel or entertainment included

But anyway I'm a fan or Premier inn

Similar  to when I cruise if there's a land location I want to visit I will use Premier inn or airbnb. For a clean room and a good nights sleep (which is actually guaranteed  by Premier inn). They will refund your room if not. I've never had to ask for a refund ever from them.

Then spend what I save on the best food and drinks venues to be found in those towns or cities

People pay big money to stay in expensive hotels  and then often go and dine somewhere else regardless (I've done the same In the past but now I look for value everywhere I can). And Premier inn deliver value and very decent quality as well. Compare them to P and O in that respect. But not in terms of facilities or dining and drinks options etc etc etc

Two great brands to be respected!!

Don't get me started on the fact Iona and Arvia offer far better and more wide ranging facilities than any 5 star hotel in the UK. And in the past I've stayed and worked events in lots of those 5 star hotels.

Nothing wrong with premier Inns. I often stayed in one when I attended progress meetings for the A13. About £100pn+ breakfast. One disadvantage over a cruise was when you woke up in the morning you were still in.....Barking ( sorry Brian ).🤣

We looked at a NCL, UK and Ireland 10 night cruise for this summer. £3,200 each in a standard balcony. That is a little more than P&O prices. As you say,  + a few hundred for tips. IMHO folk buy a cruise at around £200 per balcony cabin per night and compare to a premier inn. Premier Inn don't include food,or entertainment, or a balcony, or a different location. If purple is your thing and you don't mind your accommodation being in a pub carpark you know where to book.

Off the top of my head Premier inn don't offer:

Gyms

Fitness studios

Fitness classes

Spas

Pools

Hot tubs

Indoor cinema

Cocktail bars

Theatre

Kids clubs

Multiple restaurants serving multiple cuisines

Outdoor cinema

Sports courts

Crazy golf

Casino

Multiple entertainment

Art gallery

Retail shops

Free travel cross continents

Full board dining included in the price

24 HR rooms service

24 hr reception

Doctors and nurses on site

Daytime and  special interest talks

Classes to attend

Climbing walls

Golf practise nets

Outdoor chess

No doubt I've missed lots

But don't take it  personally Premier Inn as I love you still for what you do offer

Premier inn offers a room and a venue like brodies. And pub level breakfast and meals you have to pay extra for.

Only a handful of 5 star hotels anywhere in the world offer all of the above so find one and compare P and O to one of them

It is - but having stayed in many for work over the years I think Premier Inn delivers a damn good product, and a far far better product than many independent hotels.

Calling something a Premier Inn is praise, not an insult.

Just to clarify. I am not degrading Premier Inn in anyway shape or form. I use them on a regular basis and they are great and fantastic value for money. In fact I am a shareholder, so know a bit about them.

Fair doos ICF, not many PI's put you in an inside room either.

So how does staying in a Premier Inn actually  compare with cruising on P and O?

You should be able to back it up

I've shown the differences above. Would like to know the similarities?

Premier Inn Dubai Ibn Battuta Mall has a gym; swimming pool; pub (with large indoor tv and an outside area with a screen that looks as big as that on Arvia); coffee shop, restaurant and is next to a shopping mall (which has a M&S). So not quite all that  P&O offer but you can get bed and breakfast for £42 per night which ain't too shabby. Mind you it's then about £550 for a return flight

We actually spent a few nights at Xmas prior to an RCL cruise staying opposite that mall at the IBN Battuta Gate Hotel.

Good location for Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as well - quick taxi from that side of Dubai to Abu Dhabi and hotels in Dubai aren't charging silly prices when Abu Dhabi grand prix is in town

We only cruise in balcony cabins and now have a price cap for P&O of £100 pppn (cruise price less OBC and TA discount).

We had 2 weeks on Britannia in July for £93 pppn and 2 weeks on Ventura in October for £92 pppn. Both Select fares with free parking as well. In fact the Ventura one was a Superior Deluxe cabin, a standard balcony was less. Our 65 night Grand Voyage on Aurora next month is costing us £73 pppn, again for a balcony cabin. That’s a late saver but the parking has only cost us £160. I’ve also had £150 shareholder OBC on each of those cruises, but haven’t included that in the above figures. We aren’t keen on booking any Iona or Arvia cruises, but they can be even cheaper.

Timing is key though. Current prices and the last launch prices were too high for us but are likely to drop closer to sailing IMHO.

I did a thread on the cutbacks some months ago. There are quite a few more than have been mentioned so far in this thread. We’ve come to accept them on the basis that most didn’t really affect us as much as we thought, and those that did we have reflected in the fact that we now have a price cap for P&O that is much lower than we used to pay.
