Article: "In defense of cruising, cruisers and Royal Caribbean"

Recommended Posts

I didn’t read the full original reference article (don’t have a subscription to the Atlantic and wasn’t interested in purchasing one to read what seemed to be a snarky article.  I do feel the rebuttal article you linked nails it.  And most definitely love having met some incredible friends onboard a cruise ship….and soon to embark on cruise #10 with them

Most people who crab about anything are unhappy people in the first place.  Who would want to be around a person like that for a week anyways?   SOUR GRAPES!

I read that hateful little article and never have seen more concentrated sneering and condescension in one place. Most things he said were completely different from all of our experience over about 15 cruises and he had to be absolutely blind or willful in seeking out bad experiences.

If you believed that article the cruise was a floating MAGA convention with a bunch of louts with IQs of 20. I'm sure my husband Rich and I have met plenty of conservatives on our cruises but the vast majority (of course with the rare exception) of cruisers know to avoid religion and politics and instead bond over our shared love of cruising, eating/drinking, casino gaming, or whatever.  We've met lots of fascinating and fun people and have never felt excluded or unwelcome or alienated.

Some people wrote wonderful responses to the Atlantic and his responses to a couple of them continued being snarky and neglected to address the accurate criticisms they'd made of that hit piece. Cruising seems to be one of the most polarizing of vacation choices, but we fell in love with it after our first cruise and will always sing its praises to any of our friends who might otherwise be misled by miserable articles like that.

I could write negative articles about people who enjoy recreational vehicle camping (I was one of them), camping in general, NASCAR, DISNEY, UNIVERSAL, flying, etc., etc.

This is America. What YOU do for fun is your choice.

If I do not think it is fun, who cares, you enjoy it. I do not feel the need or want to waste the time trying to convince you that you should not be enjoying it.

Hopefully, everyone finds things they enjoy doing and in most cases, people with similar interest will bond together and enjoy each others' company.

That article would be like me being tasked with reviewing recipes for zucchini, knowing that I already hate zucchini.

More zucchini for the rest of us, pass it over please!

We can all agree to disagree.  The horror lies in trying to force others to agree.  So far cruising has never resulted in any of that for us.  Don't ask, don't tell when cruising...the best policy.

Now if we're talking brussel sprouts or lima beans, I'm your guy.

I've called Brussel sprouts "Hell balls" since I was a little boy. 🤮

Which keeps the theme of this discussion 'rolling'.

One man's "Hell ball" is another man's "Heavenly sprout."

There is no accounting for taste when it come to 'taste."

Thank goodness we are all different or else we would all be fighting over the same food.

I am glad everyone does not like cruising, the prices would only go up more due to demand if they did.
