Cruiseaholichal Posted March 21, 2008 #1876 Share Posted March 21, 2008 Yeap, that's exactly what happened to me too. I booked in Auguest 07 and was hit with the fee in late Dec/ early Jan No. It is illigel in Canada to add a charge after a purchace. In other words, by booking our cruise we had entered into a contract with Carnuval for a guaranteed price. Adding the surcharge would have changed the agreed upon price. They were not allowed to do it and we do not have to pay.
Humblesteem Posted March 22, 2008 #1877 Share Posted March 22, 2008 Ok, I hope this is not crass, but what happens when nature calls but you can't go! My tip is this....PRUNE juice. Yes, you heard me prune juice. Often times people can't go in a strange bathroom. :o Plus, eating all that rich fattening food in large quanties can have some consequences. You can have prune juice sent to your cabin by room services. On deck you have to request prune juice but it is still free. Prune juice is free on the carnival lines. I drink some after my first day on the cruise after eating everything in sight. And don't assume that I am an older person this tip works for any age! :D
ks1460 Posted March 26, 2008 #1878 Share Posted March 26, 2008 Does anyone know if Carnival allows you to pack your own liquor, soda or water? I thought I read that they were not allowing this and can't seem to find it. Thanks.
cruzinnluvinit Posted March 26, 2008 #1879 Share Posted March 26, 2008 Does anyone know if Carnival allows you to pack your own liquor, soda or water? I thought I read that they were not allowing this and can't seem to find it. Thanks. I see this is your second post. Don't blast her people. None of the cruise lines allow you to pack liquor. Some allow wine and champaign. If you do a search in the Carnival thread, you will find many conversations about liquor. You will find some people smuggle it on, some people are horrified that they do and others just get tired of hearing the arguments. Some threads have very strong reactions so take everything with a grain of salt. Good luck. When I was on Carnival they had me give them alcohol purchased in ports but some people just walked right by the checkin table and took it to their cabin. If you get caught, they take it and return it the night before you disembark. Linda Linda
allgeeteredup Posted March 26, 2008 #1880 Share Posted March 26, 2008 Wow, I am learning so much about cruising, I can't imagine anyone taking their first cruise without these boards, Thanks for all the helpfu hints, and please keep them coming! I agree. I also learned that people bring the Magic Bullet on cruises with them to make their own drinks or smoothies. That was very interesting. tess2cruz Posted March 27, 2008 #1882 Share Posted March 27, 2008  Does anyone know if Carnival allows you to pack your own liquor, soda or water? I thought I read that they were not allowing this and can't seem to find it. Thanks. Ditto on the liquor answer. (won't tell you I am one of the smugglers! shhhh:p ) As for soda and water, not a problem. Last cruise we carried a couple of 12 packs right on the ship. And it is always advisable to take water, or a water bottle to fill on the ship, to take on the island with you. Of course if some of your water and soda bottles are 80 proof...... Happy Cruiseing

lynpat Posted March 30, 2008 #1884 Share Posted March 30, 2008 just finished reading all of the great tips. I am going on my 6th cruise in 1 /12 weeks and was still able to get some great advice. My advice to all would be........you are going on a cruise to have a great time! You know ahead of time that you will need to spend money on drinks, photos, stolen beach towels, and stolen bath robes. If you can't afford to pay for these things, don't use them. Drink the free coffee, take your own photos around the ship, bring your own beach towels and robes. I know how much I can afford to spend and plan accordingly. I don't go on the ship planning how I can "get my money's worth for the price of the cruise" by ripping the cruise line off for items that I know I will be expected to pay for. You are the people that make the prices go up. If you can't afford to go, stay home, or plan a different vacation. If you do go, spend the time enjoying how fortunate you are to be on a beautiful ship in a beautiful location. Don't waste so much time trying to figure out how to steal things that aren't free. jfer25 Posted March 30, 2008 #1885 Share Posted March 30, 2008 Soda tip: If you can wait until your first port of call for soda it is easier to buy it in port & bring it back on the ship (unopened). It makes your luggage alot lighter!! We have been doing this for years. They don't charge for a glass or cup of ice at any of the bars, you just have to ask. This is simply not correct... They scan your purchases and confiscate any beverages in Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Cozumel, San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Marteen, Aruba, etc.

I clearly remember having no problems bringing on pop from a few of these ports... I know they confiscate liquor, but I didn't think they took away pop... I've picked up soda in port many times and never had it confiscated. You are allowed to bring soda and bottled water onboard.
asnow815 Posted March 30, 2008 #1889 Share Posted March 30, 2008 Okay, I have a tip, but don't flame me for this. I admit it's a little sneaky. And you can blame my husband, it was his idea. He goes to the galley of pictures and finds ours. Then he gets up real close to our picture and takes his own picture of it. That way he doesn't have to pay for our picture. I know. We're bad. Real bad. My husband and I are going to try this on our cruise in May. Thanks, I can't beleive we haven't thought of that.
justbreathe Posted March 30, 2008 #1890 Share Posted March 30, 2008 We just came off the Holiday a couple of weeks ago. I spent about $150 on pictures........this included 5 8x10's, 2 5x7's, 8 wallets, our embarkation photo and our photo in Cozumel. For all of that and the quality of the photos, I thought it was a good value! The photos were extremely good and I loved the quality--I thought they were very professionally done. Karen That is a good deal. You can always get a Release from Carnival (just e-mail them) to make copies of the pics when you get home, so you do not have to spend the money for the smaller pics. cah14522 Posted March 31, 2008 #1893 Share Posted March 31, 2008 Regular coffee is free at meals and at the self-service stations in the Lido Buffet. Specialty coffees are charged. You can get them at the specialty coffee shop near the casino. You can get espresso and cappucino free with dinner.

Who needs a release? Just scan the photo and make your own picture file and then, if you don't want to just try printing them up yourself, go to a Walmart or some other store that lets you make your own prints from a photo file. Problem solved.
crystalh256 Posted April 1, 2008 #1895 Share Posted April 1, 2008 O.K. Just back from the Spirit. The ship uses two types of toilet paper. Both are made by the same company. The sandpaper they call "envision" you will not want to subject your bottom to for 8 days. Ask your room steward to make sure that your stateroom is stocked with the "preference" paper instead. ;) Yikes!! Who thought of the name envision for toilet paper......
