Traditional? How long are you going to be there? Historical Amsterdam is compact, so location is not terribly important for getting around, but different parts of the city have different "feels." X-ring Posted October 4, 2006 #7 Share Posted October 4, 2006 Great. Where? And how do I find them? Go to the main Europe page and either: 1 - go thru and scan (visually) each page of postings 2 - click on the "Search this forum" link at the top of the page and enter 'Amsterdam hotel'. #2 should be much faster and give you the list as per the following link: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/search.php?searchid=3874835

We've been to Amstrdm b4; frequent flier miles have us arriving 11:30PM (!)...I'm thinking of the Hotel American, Mozart,---Centrally located....I've been on tripadvisor....I'm looking to spend under $200 per night...Also Hotel Prisen....Unfortunately, we will have just 2 full days, and our flight leaves at 8:00am on the 3rd day. So- the 1st night is spent sleeping, and 2 full days...It's been awhile since we were there. We stayed at the Marriott the last time--dont ask me how--they now want $350 per night. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions. "Hotel Prisen" -- I assume that is Het Prinsen Hotel? If not, I never heard of it; sorry. Assuming my guess to be accurate, of the three you name, I'd go for the American. The only major downside is that it can get a bit noisy. Please note, howver, that I have not stayed at the Prinsen, but I have been inside. When I arrive late (ya, frequent fryer miles here, also <grin>), I like to stay at Schiphol the first night. TH eSheraton there is quite nice and rtehr inexpensive on weekends. Too expensive for me on weekdays, but the price is about 1/2 normal on weekends. Mentioning that just in case you arrive there Friday or Sat. night. Enjoy

The only problem I figure is that they won't let us check in early and we may waste part of the day waiting to check in....

24butterfly Posted October 4, 2006 Author #13 Share Posted October 4, 2006 I'm really considering the Hotel American--but I read or heard somewhere that after midnight you have to use a different entrance?? Do you know anything about this?? Thanks again!
Rare taxatty Posted October 5, 2006 #14 Share Posted October 5, 2006 We stayed this summer at the Hotel Toren--very nice room, A/C, pleasant staff, good breakfast, good location about a 15 minute walk from Dam Square and the main tram lines and a 20 minute walk to the Central train station. Good restaurants nearby as is the Anne Frank House. I'd stay there again in a second. Les

They might not let you check-in early, but they will store your luggage for you. I have often done this. Then, sometime before dinner, I wander back to the hotel and do the paperwork. 24butterfly Posted October 6, 2006 Author #17 Share Posted October 6, 2006 Ine--thanks for the list. Some are a bit more than I wanted to spend--esp. since the Hotel is not our destination.....What do you know of the American Hotel--do you have an opinion about it? Thank you in advance.. Ine Posted October 6, 2006 #18 Share Posted October 6, 2006 American is one of the older hotels. It used to be in the Holiday Inn chain, but recently was transferred to Best Western. I am sure the rooms will be nicely renovated, but probably small. It is many years ago I saw the rooms. The location is right on Leidseplein, a busy area. Their cafe is a popular place to have a drink and snack. In my list you will also find some not so expensive hotels, like the NH chain, Hotel Brouwer,Hotel Ibis and also check the site of the tourist office. There are so many hotels at various rates. 24butterfly Posted October 9, 2006 Author #19 Share Posted October 9, 2006 Hi, and thanks again. I'm probably looking at the Hotel Mozart and a couple of others. I'll let you know so you can tell me your opinion. We know we will do some walking and/or take the tram. We've been to Amsterdam before, and I've been to the Riks. and Van Gogh at least 2x. CruiserPK Posted October 9, 2006 #22 Share Posted October 9, 2006 We stayed at the Renaissance for a weekend break in Amsterdam. The hotel was centrally located, had a great buffet breakfast and was quite reasonable. (I think around 200 euros per night for two including breakfast.) Have a great trip! Cheers, Pam

GramaFran Posted October 10, 2006 #24 Share Posted October 10, 2006 We stayed at the NH Grand Krasnapolsky Hotel right on Dam Square. We had a fantastic room on the 6th floor with a balcony. I got the best rate through the Amsterdam Visitor Web site not the hotels own web site. We paid 537 Euros for 3 nights. It was a great hotel and the Winter Garden room where they serve breakfast is beautiful. Francine
