Pearl Transatlantic - Shoreguy Blog - 2 December 2006

Just wanted to let others know the cell phones (Cingular) work on the Pearl. Also Text messages work and have been sending and receiving both. I had a nice 20 minute $50 call during Saturday nights storm. Clear as could be. She was too afraid to go out on the balcony but opened the door so I could hear the wind noise.

Everything on the ship is beautiful. Food is great, Hamburgers were 1/2 inch thick and 100 percent pure beef. On departure the poor guy was cooking as fast as he could and sweating (don't tell the director). A little humor the TP is a little rough.

There is a lot of SeaSick passengers and crew but my friends electric "Relief Band" is a real blessing no problems. She went to the show lastnight and it was OK and had 2 Lobsters for dinner. Hot tubs are out of order. Just someone elses views.

can you tell us more about the shows? We heard something about a roller blade/bmx/skateboard show....can they even do that show in bad seas?

I was also interested in the shows, and wondering if it was even possible with this crazy weather! :)

I love the Garden Cafe seating...much much much improved! Keep those pictures coming (to Shoreguy, or anyone else on this trip!)

* squawk!! * WHAT?? I wish you people would stick to what's important here!

No chocolate fondue?! How can they do that to us Le Bistro Phondu Phreaks now that we are addicted??

Shore Guy, c'mon, man--talk to somebody about this. There just HAS to be chocolate fondue on the Gem when she sails!

Hi Greenie:D

I think that there will be more "clout" if you and a lot of other passengers sent your Fondue request to the top Brass:D

Is the Gem your next cruise?

Hi Seahorse! :D

That's a good idea ... I'm gonna give the powers that be the benefit of the doubt for now. But if I hear reports there is no fondue once the Gem sails next fall, well, I might just power up a fondue e-mail blitz. Once a week for 2 months then pick up steam and work up to every day until I board! I'll start a Bring Back the Fondu movement, by gum!

Yupper to the Gem. Just booked it today and am so excited. I went looking for a roll call and thar it be! Started by The Big Kahuna himself. :D

And might we see you joining in ...? ;)

Definitely! If anything, we've learned that talking to the right people gets things done. That's great information for future NCL cruisers. As for fog...no fog here. I'm reading everything perfectly clear. ;)

We could all start smuggling our fondue pots in our luggage, along with the blenders.

Hi Shoreguy! Your updates are great...we sail away on the Pearl on January 5th. We would love to see a quick picture of the kids pool, if you have a chance...or a better description...We have been on the Star and our kids loved that kid pool setup. We are so hoping that the Pearl will be similar as the pool is what a vacation is all about for 3 and 6 year olds!

Thanks again for your dedication to this board!!!!

Being the only poster to mention fog - This in no way made any reference to you personally.

Only a reference to the way the entire thread has been fogging up.

Still waiting for Shoreguy to reappear for the next episode.

Oops I attached wrong.

See below imgs from Great Circle http://gc.kls2.com/cgi-bin/gc?path=SOU-MIA

The great circle course does go west of Ireland right about the center of the perfect storm.

I thought I read that the route was to drop below Spain and then come across to avoid the Northern Atlantic this time of year. ;)

AJ and I are eagerly awaiting hearing your next installment. You have become a part of our family.

Anything for you and AJ :)

10 am Dec 4

Ships speed 20.4 knots – seas down to 6-8 meters, winds 35-40 knots – getting better. May be some of the passengers and crew that have not left their cabins will start to appear. The ship is not full only about 2000 passengers and good percentage of them have been a bit under the weather. The dealers in the casino looked very green in their yellow shirts. I did notice a few of them had what looked like lunch bags close at hand. Not sure why they would have those J

Last night was La Cucina for dinner. About every 10 minutes a plate, glass, or set of silverware would slide of the fake wood tables and crash to the floor. A high chair (empty) made the trip from the front all the way to the back of the restaurant with one pitch of the ship. Klaus and Sean stopped by the table doing the rounds. Next thing we new a bottle of wine appeared on the table.

My son was disappointed as you all know Chicken Parm is no longer on the menu but they do have a dish with a breaded chicken breast. Using my best problem solving skills I came up with a plan. I felt like Jack Nicolson in 5 Easy Pieces ordering toast. Can we have the breaded chicken dish plain, now can you put that on a plate covered with tomato sauce, and finally if it is not too much trouble could you melt some cheese on top. It was great.

Just got a call from Colleen the GSC – more people wanting to join the bowling tournament I have not even set up yet – bowling at sea for 40 on two lanes. A CC’s work is never done

Now where was I – after diner we where going to Bliss. Before we went I wanted a smoke. Outside was not an option. Headed for the lobby – No Smoking. Finally ended up at he Maltings (Star Bar would have been closer had I been thinking clearly). Stood next to as it turns out some of GAR contractors setting up the lighting for the shows and Rudi Macaggi from Americas got Talent. Snorkeling Barb showed up. One of the new shows I believe is an oldie “Sea Legs” Nobody know yet what shows what nights it all depents on the Seas. The even canceled the first day of Bingo !!!!!!

Needless to say never made it back to Bliss and since the Casino was so close and just about empty we stopped for a short 3 hour run – Casino was much better to me.

Coffee machine is telling me to ventilate – anyone know how – I need another double espresso.

Captain promised this morning in couple days we will be able to enjoy the furniture poolside.

4 pm – seas continue to improve – ran into Ruth at my 3 hour lunch in Cagney’s. Most of her forward penthouse passengers are still down for the count. Great lunch again a little calamari and a Rubin sandwich. Prawns and pork with Asian noodles. Why 3 hours ran into Flying Pirate and Cha as I was leaving joined them for a brief conversation that lasted for 2 hours. Great time.

Missed the Martini tasting again – on purpose – noon is just too early even for me. Missed the Blackjack and Poker tournaments. Conversation was better.

Something new when the ship gets to Miami they are going to have outdoor seating for La Cucina . Learned that at lunch.

Tonight is formal optional night., I think. My son heard the announcement but nothing in the “new and improved” Freestyle Daily. The new look is great but it will take some getting used to. No longer hour by hour but rather sections with different types of similar events clustered with times. Games and Activities, Music and Shows, Bar promos, Major items, Resturants, etc.

Off to meet with Colleen and get this bowling together.

5 pm - Bowling is being handled. Colleen is sending out the invitations and handling the RSVP could not be more helpful. The first ever at sea CC alternate shot bowling tournament with cash prizes.

Back to formal or not – it is part of the new marketing trying to move to no real formal nights. Dress up when you want. Thus the reason no mention in the FSD. Now take this fight to another thread..lol

12 am or should I say 11 pm – turning back the clocks another hour tonight. Current speed 21.1 knots seas 12-18 feet. Winds 52 knots across the ship.

Dinner at the Bistro this evening after I slept through the magic and comedy of Bob and Sarah Trumel in the Stardust. I all fairness they may have pulled some of the act for the sea conditions.

Bistro was in fact excellent as usual even with the new menu – Had the lobster and scallop appetizer, Boston lettuce salad, Mushroom soup in a bread bowl and for an entrée double double escargot. I asked for a double and the doubled up the snails in each. My son had the short rib and tenderloin which was very good but a little Béarnaise sauce or something would have made it better.

Stopped by outside the Bistro to listen a bit to Pamala Stanley and ran into snorkeling Barb. We tried to talk and two fine gentlemen jumped from their seats to tell me to be quiet they were listening to the music. I started to explain they were in a BAR not a show but Barb keep me from explaining it fully..lol

Many more passengers out and about this evening – I even had as many as 3 others at the table in the casino for a little while. Things go to fast playing one on one with the dealer.

Another Martini Clinic tomorrow at NOON – that is silly.

As far as main restaurants Indigo remains my and others favorite. Aqua was my least favorite on the Dawn but they have really made the space wonderful. Smaller then Summer Palace and many felt the service was better.

Overall impression remains this ship is special and those booked on her are in for a treat. The Jewel on step better.

As for the postter who said no meat on the main menus. Were you really on an NCL ship. Red meat everywhere I turn. The new menus are a giant leap forward and back.

Carving action station for lunch in the Garden Café.

Tomorrow I need to resize pictures- the kids pool on the Star and Dawn were special. That space is now the great outdoors - unless your kids are 5-7 they will be dissappointed.
