Legend 7/26 Sailing Delayed

What a bummer.

We are sailing on Princess for our Honeymoon cruise in October. Our ship is having engine problems and they have canceled one of our ports to their Private Island Princess Cayes and cut short a few other ports but an hour.

Princess gave us $200 per person on board credit. We can deal with the $400 and take an extra day at sea :)

This will buy us nice items to take back with us and plenty of margaritas and foo foo drinks.

You should fight for a little more $$$ from Carnival. This is no way to treat their customers.

I cruised the Legend at the beginning of 2003 and it was great. You will have a wonderful time!

Kodiac :)

Back in Dec. of 2001, we were sailing on the Inspiration out of New Orleans...supposed to depart at 4:00 p.m. When we got to the pier at about noon, the ship wasn't even there. We were all given flyers that said the ship had to return to Cozumel to drop off a sick passenger, and we would be leaving about 6 hours late. We got $15.00 per person at the time, which we didn't think was too bad. We had a great lunch at a great Cajun restaurant in the Riverwalk Mall. What really p***** me off though, is that I spent WAYYYYYYY too much money (pre-cruise) at the Riverwalk for stuff I did not need and could not afford! Stupid me :)

I was also on the 7/18 Carnival Legend that just returned 7/26.
I spoke to two officers when I was on board, and confirmed that both a large wave and an estimated 70mph wind hit the side of the ship. The ship tilted 30 degrees and the stabilizer broke as a result. The stabilizer was then fixed in San Juan.
As far as the tilt they would not confirm another rumor I had heard, but they did not deny either. Suppossably the tilt maximum is 37 degrees. At 37 degrees the boat would capsize. Still trying to confirm today, but the tilt was confirmed as 30 degrees

The carnival Legend left last night after midnight, but as it says in their brochures they have the right to change course any time. The $20 is the refund for the San Juan Port charge. That is the only amount they are obligated to return back to passengers since they will not be docking there, i.e. as of last night they were losing San Juan as the first destination.

The real thing

Due to the Carnival Legend's late 6:00 p.m. arrival to New York on Monday, July 26th, the ship was not able to depart from New York for the present voyage until 1:45 a.m. this morning, Tuesday, July 27th. The late departure from New York has resulted in delaying arrival to San Juan to docking at approximately 6:00 p.m.. The ship will extend the call to St. Thomas to departing at 8:00 p.m. as a partial make up for the late arrival to San Juan.

My goodness, people, a man's life was at stake here and people are complaining about getting on the ship 8 hours late? Have we all become that cynical?

Think of it this way...you are starting a hopefully wonderful vacation. The poor man who suffered the heart attack and his family are probably experiencing the worst time of their life.

Maybe a little compassion is needed here. I understand people were probably upset who got off the ship late, as well as those who got on late. But nothing is perfect. With cruiselines trying to stay afloat (sorry for the intended pun!), I'm sure it's hard to just pass out $$$ when something like this happens. We missed a port one time and were credited back $20. I didn't expect a dime, so it was a pleasant surprise.

Try to lighten up a bit and have a little sympathy for the fear the sick man and his family must have felt. Imagine being offloaded into a boat in the middle of the ocean...and on top of that being worried whether or not your loved one would survive the illness!

I went on a 7 day cruise....Departed on Sunday, 24 May and returned on Saturday, 29 May. 7 days. And if you go to Carnival's website pick any 7 day cruise and you will see that the departures and arrivals are the same.
It may not always be an Sunday to Saturday cruise. I questioned my TA about it when I originally booked the cruise. And she basically told me the same thing....the first and last day really doesn't count...and I said, that the cruiseline should call it a 5 day cruise then.

dbcresent - the point that I was making is that passengers were upset that they were going to board the ship late. And my TA stated that no one ever complains about the fact that on most cruises, the ship arrives back in port early and passengers disembark usually by noon. Therefore, their last day is not a full day.

mtd716 - Out of curosity I just went to the Carnival website. And you are right about 7 day cruises. Departs on Saturday and returns on Saturday. But as my last post indicated we left on Sunday and returned on Saturday and it was booked as a 7 day cruise.

It's never really a full 7 "day" cruise....but, the is a significant difference between noon and midnight to those getting on..

I can see both sides.....people will miss meals, shows, etc......on the flip side, Carnival will realize nowhere near the revenue in the casino and bars from people waiting to disembark that they do from freshly arriving passengers.

People are wanting compensated for a man having a heart attack, I don't think that is something the cruiseline has responsibility for. If it were mechanical or something of the sort, that might shed a different light.....take the offer and enjoy.

dbcresecent - when my wife and I sailed in May I only remember the only activity the first night was a talk conducted my the CD and his staff. If boarding the ship at 9:00 p.m. mean't that I missed both lunch and dinner I might be alittle upset....but, I don't think that I would expect the cruiseline to compensate me. There are other thoughts, like maybe Carnival should have provided sandwiches, drinks, snacks in the terminal. And maybe cranked up the midnight buffet once the passengers were on board.

Justcrusin101 - I was in the Navy back in the 70's. I was on a destroyer and while in the North Atlantic the ship I was on did in fact take a 34 degree roll. It happened at night and it was incredible to see the damage. I saw metal that was bent and twisted and it was hard to believe that "nature" could have caused the damage. But in high seas it wasn't the rolling that bothered me, but the dropping down into a traugh. I have been on the bridge and watched a ship that was ahead of us drop down and the entire bow of the ship would be underwater. And as the ship came back up it would expose the aft and you could actually see the propellers spinning.

Wow..thats sounds like what happened to me when I was on the Ryndam (Holland American) way back when we hit Hurrican Hazel going trans atlantic. The prop came right out of the water and you could hear the whirring sound. Ill never forget it.

I was a kid at the time. They removed all the furniture from the playroom and we all sat on pillows and went from one side of the room to the other as the ship listed, rocked and rolled. God's honest truth!

It was one heck of a crossing and we were 2 days late getting into port.

I'm on the cruise right now. Lots of unhappy people. Lines, lines, everywhere. Ship is great though, service lousy at times, shows are good, food ok, weather is fine. St. Thomas is really nice (Godfrey's tour is great)The ship was really rocking on the way here, they had to make up time. Not a smooth ride.

Wow, my friend down the street is on this cruise. I hope you all end up having a great time, and that the man who had a heart attck is okay. Are the weather conditions okay now, or is it still really rocly? How long were you in Puerto Rico, and in St. Thomas?

Jett: looking forward to your review when you get back. Read about the people getting off from the previous week and how crew was complaining how its gonna be when the new passengers come on - the crew gets the brunt of their anger. I wonder if it shows if service is down.

My boss is one the cruise right now and let me say that it sounds like there are a large amount of unhappy people on that cruise .....They ended up leaving NYC at 1:45am so it was too late for the lifeboat drill .....they did it in the morning instead while everyone was having breakfast........To make up for missed time the Cpt was going full speed which made it very windy on deck..........still waiting for the rest of the info since she only called from SanJaun because it was free from her cell phone ....LOL.....I am going on the same cruise in Oct and let me just say that I know I will love it....I am a glass half full kinda person and she is a glass half empty person LOL:)Bonnie

that sailing is having it's share of problems. My sister just returned today from the Paradise. She said that while they were in St. Thomas (maybe it was Nassau) that the Legend was there too. The Legend had run through some EXTREME weather and some of the passengers were so spooked that they were getting on planes and going home from the first port they came to.

When did they hit the bad weather?? We just got off on June 30 and the weather was PERFECT the whole trip (except for a few hours of rain in Puerto Rico).

When I was cruising on the Sensation a few years back, there was a passenger who, knowing he had an allergy to peanuts, decided to eat the chicken sate (with peanut sauce) for dinner anyhow -- he figured he'd have time to reach his cabin and take his shot before the reaction got too bad. Unfortunately, he miscalculated. He collapsed in a corridor, the ship's doctor had to do an emergency tracheotomy on board, and then they actually had to turn the ship around and head back to St. Thomas to get him to a hospital. They weren't able to do a helicopter evac because the winds were too strong. We ended up missing our port call in St. Martin (which was the main reason I took that particular cruise, having already been to St. Thomas and San Juan a couple of times) and substituted Nassau instead. Although I did enjoy Nassau, I was a little ticked off at this guy who thought nothing of inconveniencing an entire ship, and believe me, there were quite a few other passengers not real happy with the guy as well. But it just shows that one person experiencing a medical emergency can delay the entire ship.
