No Travel Iron???

Travel irons are not permitted on any ship.....not just HAL. They are a real fire hazard.

You're on vacation. Leave the iron home and send out the few things that might need pressing. The price is really quite moderate.

On all the ships but Vista Class, there are guest laundry rooms that have irons and ironing boards. You didn't say which ship you are sailing.

Don't bring the iron. It isn't worth the possibility of putting other people at risk.

I loathe ironing. I'd rather scrub a toilet than iron. Needless to say, I never iron while on vacation even if one is available. Just mist your clothes with Downey Wrinkle Release, follow instructions, hang them up and you'll look fabulous. Besides, your on vacation, that crisp iron look just isn't in style when you're relax'n.

I can't imagine even doing the laundry myself while on vacation. Heck, I don't even do my own laundry at home ... I'm gonna do it on a cruise?

My advice to the OP would be the same. Leave the iron at home and, as another on this thread said, send the stuff out to be pressed if need be ... the prices are certainly very reasonable. Irons are a real fire hazard on a ship, and you wouldn't want to jeopardize the safety of your fellow passengers ... let alone your own ... just to have wrinkle-free clothes. It's just not worth it.

Blue skies ...

On my January Noordam cruise there was a notice in the cabin reminding us that irons are not allowed.

This was also the first time I had read an official notice that steamers are also not allowed in the cabins. Makes sense to me.

Is it really true? I always drag my travel iron along and usually don't use it. I read that they will be confiscated if found!

Have you been reading the threads about ships going through rough seas?

Imagine if someone left an iron/portable hot water heater/steamer plugged in while the ship was going through this - and the hot iron/whatever fell on the carpet, bed or some clothing and started a fire. Now imagine being forced to sit in a lounge for hours on end like the folks on Star Princess during their recent big fire, or worse being forced to abandon ship in rough seas like the passengers and crew of Prinsendam(I) when she burned and eventually sank in the Alaskan Gulf. Fun vacation scenario, huh?

Please leave your iron at home and let the stewards do your laundry/ironing for you.

Having onlyh been on one HAL ship, theStatendam, I don;t know what other ships are like but the irons on this ship were to say the least disgustintg. If they want to stop ppl bringing their own irons they shoud at least provide reasonalbe ones on board.

What always amuses me when I read these threads about irons on board, is every time I go on a ship these days no one seem to mention to ppl who smoke that it is a real hazard to through cigarettes still glowing over the side of the ship. Quite frankly it absolutely staggers me, much more dangererous than an iron.

You are right on target. Smokers indeed pose a greater hazard, but HAL refuses to accomodate the majority of us who don't smoke!

No one asked about smoking. The subject was irons.

Why not start your own anti smoking thread instead of trying to turn this one into one?

Normally I would not reply to such foolishness, but a point made by a previous poster was well taken. Smoking is more dangerous than irons.

And I chose to reply because it irritates "odd balls"!

I shouldn't, I shouldn't, Oh hell, I gonna.

Don't you think it is a bit ridiculous to compare sentinent people with inanimate objects?? To act as if a smoker isn't capable of more hazard awareness than an iron is to say the least not an objective thought.

The iron is not only a fire hazard it is an electrical hazard as well! Considering the number of smokers on any given ship and the number of fires traced to a careless smoker if I were the OP I would be more concerned with following the rules and less concerned with what others choose to do that is within the rules.

ps Oddball: are you still filling cannons with paint????

Our recent cruise on Noordam was the first time I saw a notice stating steamers are not allowed aboard. I always knew that irons were not allowed and I totally understood and agreed but was surprised to find the banning of steamers. That's okay with me and, of course, I'll obey but have I been oblivious? Is this a new rule or was I merely uninformed in the past?

For those who speak of the smokers, there are fewer and fewer places where smoking is permitted. Noordam allowed no smoking in the casino and it is now banned in Lido pool area....the tables outside Lido that used to permit it.

It is my notion that very soon, it will be banned in cabins/verandas. No one has said it to me but the trend seems to indicate that.

To clarify: the Midship Lido Pool area is non-smoking except for the Lido Bar. Also the Seaview Bar (aft Lido) and the tables under the Starboard Awning are a smoking area - the rest is non-smoking.

I was referencing the tables, Brian. The week we disembarked, all those tables on both sides of the Lido pool are non-smoking. You can sit at the bar itself and smoke but that is it.

Same applies for aft pool. Smoking permitted at the bar. I think smoking may still be permitted at a few of the tables starboard side.

What about the tables in the Lido Bar area? Not the side tables along the windows, but the tables within the bar confines. I would hope these tables are still smoking and considered part of the pool bar/lounge area if non-smokers are going to have all the tables alongside the pool. So few tables were smoking to begin with, making them all non-smoking seems highly unfair.

It was certainly not my intention to pick on smokers, that was not the point I was making. I had noticed in recent years that smokers are not reminded any more not to throw their fags over the side of the ship because the consequences would be blah blah. FIRE

I also stated that IMO the irons provided for use on the Statendam were ABSOLUTE CRAP. Anything to get pax to cough up yet more money, I was on a 4 week jaunt there was actually much fighting over the 2 irons that were situated right opposite my cabin and that was when they were actually operational. Oh how much fun was that......not!

It is my understanding that, on Noordam, all of the round, full size tables up and down each side at Lido pool will be non-smoking. I think smoking may be permitted in the area immediately forward of the bar. There are about maybe 5 or so tables in that area. I think smoking is still permitted there but am not positively sure. On Starboard side, there is the Taco/Burger Bar and all the tables there are non-smoking. It is my understanding the tables port side of the pool are also non-smoking.

Noordam is a very popular ship and these changes are being happily welcomed by the vast majority of guests.

The smoke free casino was wonderful to most of us. Nearby Sports Bar and the Bar side of Northern Lights permit smoking.

But, this thread was about irons. I don't mean for it to remain a smoking thread. I am simply trying to answer your question based upon my recent cruise on Noordam and information I was told.
