Amsterdam Hotels

Recommended Posts

We will be in Amsterdam for 4 days next June prior to a Baltic Cruise. Any recommendations for a good city center hotel in the $125-$250 range.

Looking near Dam Square, my top picks (check the tripadvisor.com booking tools for pricing - I find they sometimes have better prices than the hotels directly), are the Swissotel, the Golden Tulip Amsterdam Centre, Radisson SAS and Sofitel, and if you want convenience to the cruise terminal, the Movenpick is adjacent. Black Tulip is also highly rated, but it's closer to the train station.

In addition to tripadvisor for its reviews, I also used kayak.com for pricing since it includes prices from many different booking sites. I used Google maps to find reviews and pictures of hotels on other websites (not all of which are in English). Eventually, I booked thru easytobook.com--no fee, no deposits. When I decided that I really wanted a hotel in the museum district and not near Dam Square, I was able to call them on their 800 number and make the change.

We stayed at the Fita Hotel for two nights pre cruise a few weeks ago. Didn't want a North American style hotel...wanted some character. It's in a quiet residential area, a couple of blocks from the Rijksmuseum. It's about a 30 minute walk to Dam Square and a 10 minute walk to Leidseplein and every style of restaurant you could ever want. It came well recommended on TripAdvisor. It has 15 rooms, was spotlessly clean, included a nice breakfast, the owners were helpful/friendly and calls to North America were free. Also free use of the internet by the breakfast room. The photos on the website are a true representation of what the hotel looks like. Wouldn't hesitate to stay again.

http://www.fita.nl/ Under the "Images" tab...we had the double medium room 20 sq meters.

I'm very interested in this thread. I'm seriously considering a RCCL cruise in 2008 that will finish in Amsterdam. RCCL offers no post-cruise Hotel packages. It will be my first time in this city. My priority would be convenience. Once I disembark, I'd like to see the Ann Frank house and perhaps the Van Gogh (sp?) museum. I'd like to stay overnight, then get to the airport easily for my overseas flight the next day. Any ideas on which Hotel might work out best? Also, do the hotels offer a tranfer van to the airport?

No hotels offer transfers to the airport (except of course the airporthotels), but there is a shuttle service by connexxion to many hotels, for which you must make reservations going TO the airport (not from the airport to town).

http://www.schipholhotelshuttle.nl/site/home.asp

At the cruise terminal Hotel Movenpick was opened last year. From the terminal there is a tramnr 25 going into town every 15 minutes. Also 26 stops near the terminal. Have a look at this networkmap:

http://www.gvb.nl/english/travellers/maps/lijnenkaart.html

Amsterdam is not really that big and public transport is excellent.

You can make on-line reservations for Ann Frank house to avoid possible long lines.

I have never seen long lines at van Gogh Museum, (which is close to Rijksmuseum). Absolutely make a canalboatride.

Amsterdam offers many hotels in all priceranges/classes.

Your post re: smaller hotels is most helpful.

I will be in Amsterdam 2 nights. Have guide for 2nd & 3rd day. On my own as a solo the day I arrive in early AM.

So......would want to locate a nice smaller hotel that is reasonably WALKABLE to both Anne Frank House and some nice shopping; and easy dinner the day I arrive. IF one exists that fits that bill.

Any ideas? Having trouble on my old computer locating a good map that would allow me to make that determination.

A small, nice but not luxurious hotel is Hotel Brouwer:

Hotel Brouwer: http://www.hotelbrouwer.nl/index.html

or have a look at:http://www.singelhotel.nl/hotel.php

If you want more luxury: Renaissance Htl.:http://marriott.com/property/propertypage.mi?marshaCode=AMSRD

or:

Crown Plaza: http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/cp/1/en/hotel/amsnl?_requestid=1189162

Those are not too far from Ann Frank House. Remember in Amsterdam most sites are within walking distance or use public transport.

Of course this ia just a small selection, choice is very wide.

Shopping area is around Dam and Kalverstraat. More upscale is on PC Hooftstraat near Rijksmuseum.

For a good map have a look at this site:

B3 and B4 are the sections you might be interested in.

Stayed last year at Hotel Avenue for 4 nights. Convenient location and is in walking distance to the train station and most local sights. The tram operates on the street in front of the hotel. Go to tripadvisor.com and do a search for Hotel Avenue Amsterdam. Also this hotel is maybe one block from the Crown Plaza Hotel and is less expensive. I found it to be a great price especially considering location and convenience. Good luck. Ken...

I apologize if this has been mentioned before, but I am interested in a hotel near the Dam Square. I was just there last summer and I found a hotel right in the Dam Square area near Damrak but don't remember the name. I've looked online and haven't been able to find it.

I've read through the previous posts and found one or two possibilities but my party wants to be near the Dam Square since we liked that particular area.

Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.

Thanks Ine:

The link you posted came right up on my computer and very easy to

print. Terrific map.

Also, thanks for taking the time to narrow my hotel search.

Maybe you noticed already, the cruiseterminal is on B5.

I was very satisfied with Eden Rembrandt Square.... 10 min walk to Dam Square.

Very clean, especially the bathroom! Note that the frosted back wall of the shower faces the room, which provides natural light into the shower but also a frosted view of the bather to the other in the room. Plenty of hot water! Great toiletries.

2 free internet computers in lobby / not always in use.

Tram stop short block away.

The noisy construction mentioned on some online review sites has been completed, as of a month ago.

Has anyone stayed at the Swissotel Amsterdam?

I havenot stayed there, but know the hotel. Very nice, right amidst city-center, opposite major store "Bijenkorf".

Rrooms in front might have some streetnoice.

We are also going into Amsterdam before our July 3 2008 Holland America Cruise .

Any Idea on $Price$ for a taxi from the Airport to a downtown Hotel and from the Hotel to the Cruise Port ?

Thanks .

Gord and Carmen

Taxifares are about to change, more or less to fixed rates. But..that plan it has been postponed a few times. I really donot know when it will begin.

Right now, depending on traffic, you pay from the airport to a downtown hotel about Eur. 35.-/ 40.-

From the hotel to the cruiseterminal will be around Eur. 15.- since there is a minimumrate.

From the cruise-terminal back to the airport - sorry to tell you they overccharged there last summer - was at that ime Eur. 50.- or higher.

There is a shuttlebus from the airport to various hotels, check that on:

http://www.schipholhotelshuttle.nl/site/home.asp

Or make a reservation for cab airport-hotel on this link:

We used the CONNEXXION shuttle from the airport to our hotel. It cost us 19 euros each for round trip (12 euros one-way). Here is their website http://www.airporthotelshuttle.nl/site/home.asp Don't quote me on the rate because we were staying near Museum Square and not near Dam Square.

On the website, you just plug in the name of your hotel and they will tell you the current fare. The website also has maps showing you were to buy your tickets and where to get the shuttle.
