Bequia Posted September 24, 2007 #1 Share Posted September 24, 2007 Here's an updated list of the SE 17th Street area Restaurants... Pazzo’s Cucina Italiano (formerly Tara Steak & Lobster) is right next door to Extended Stay America... [/url] Carlos and Pepe's (Mexican) & Dirty Harry's (bar with food) are in the same shopping center as Pazzo's. There's also a small diner in that strip mall that I've been told has an excellent breakfast. Einstein’s Bagels, Coldstone Creamery, Starbucks, Tokyo Sushi and Giorgio’s Pizza are across the street from Holiday Inn Express/Extended Stay America Bimini Boatyard and Bravo (great Italian restaurant) and BonJour French Bakery (best croissants in town) across the street from Holiday Inn Express/Extended Stay America, and about a block east, opposite the Renaissance Hotel Budget Car Rental is in the same plaza (Quay Plaza) as Bravo and Bimini Boatyard Restaurants. Jack Jackson's new restaurant FISH is diagonally across the street from the Renaissance hotel, attached to the Convention Center complex at the entrance to Port Everglades... http://www.fish-fl.com/ Chuck's Steakhouse... and Waxy O’Connor’s are both across the street from Embassy Suites, a long block west of Holiday Inn Express/Extended Stay America Outback Steakhouse is just west of Embassy Suites next to Hyatt Place (formerly Amerisuites), and Quarterdeck is across the street and a block north of Embassy Suites on Cordova Road, just beyond Winn-Dixie... Kelly's Landing is a great New England style seafood place in a strip mall on Cordova Road, across the street from Winn-Dixie, next to Crown Liquors. There are 3 large strip malls around Holiday Inn Express/Extended Stay America - More or less across the street, next door, and behind, as well as several smaller ones. There are at least a dozen other small restaurants scattered throughout those strip malls, plus a number of fast food and carry-out places in the area as well... You'll never go hungry along that section of SE 17th Street, there's something for every taste and budget. Publix grocery store is in the Harbor Shops strip mall a block south on Cordova Road, behind Embassy Suites. Publix sell beer & wine as well as being very large, very nice grocery stores. For liquor, beer and wine…Total Wine and More http://www.totalwine.com/ is located next to Publix. This store is to alcohol what Home Depot is to lumber, it’s huge!!! Winn-Dixie grocery store is across from Crown, and there's a CVS drug store in the same strip mall as 67 Wine & Spirits. Walgreens drug store is a block east of Holiday Inn Express/Extended Stay America, across the street from the Renaissance hotel. The restaurants above are just those that you can easily walk to. If you take the Water Taxi you can easily get to dozens more. madelinerose Posted September 25, 2007 #5 Share Posted September 25, 2007 Bequia.... I think it would be a great idea if you could get the moderators to make this a "sticky". You can always do an update as restaurants come and go. Just a suggestion. ;)

Name game Posted September 25, 2007 #8 Share Posted September 25, 2007 Thank you Bequia. Now I have a question for you since I am not great at figuring out maps. Are any of these places in walking distance from the Hyatt Pier 66? Can we walk to the supermarket, the mall, any restaurants? We are New Yorkers so walking isn't such a big deal, but are there sidewalks? Thank you so much for your advice.
98Charlie Posted September 25, 2007 #9 Share Posted September 25, 2007 I wish Bequia would start adding the H & E Marina Deli to her list of restaurants in the SE 17th St. area. The deli is owned by a true New Yorker who grew up in the deli business and serves up the best pastrami and reuben sandwiches we've ever had outside of NY City. Restaurant is only open for breakfast and lunch. Closes around 3 p.m. It's located in the Southport Shopping Center across the street from HIX and towards the back of the center. Great food at really good prices. Dianne

Yes, they're within walking distance, the biggest hump is walking over the 17th Street causeway bridge. You can also hop on the Sun Trolley. It passes by the Hyatt every 15 minutes on Thurs-Sunday. For 50 cents you can get off at the Publix Supermarket doorstep. I wish Bequia would start adding the H & E Marina Deli to her list of restaurants in the SE 17th St. area. Thanks for the heads up, I'm going to check it out. I've never been able to find a "great" rueben in the Ft Lauderdale area. How's their corned beef? I really miss NY pizza, bagels, bread, and deli's, unfortunately the water in SoFla is not conducive to good pizza or bread dough.
98Charlie Posted September 25, 2007 #11 Share Posted September 25, 2007 Thanks for the heads up, I'm going to check it out. I've never been able to find a "great" rueben in the Ft Lauderdale area. How's their corned beef? I really miss NY pizza, bagels, bread, and deli's, unfortunately the water in SoFla is not conducive to good pizza or bread dough. Used to work for a Jewish restaurant owner at a corner diner here in Columbus, Ohio. He was particulary known for his grilled corned beef, reuben and pastrami sandwiches as well as his homemade brined pickles. Worked for the guy for a year before DH & I got married and spent our honeymoon in NYC back in the mid-60s. We stopped by a deli in NYC for a corned beef on rye and pastrami. First thing out of both of our mouths was ``Just like Benny Kleins'' the deli owner from home. First time we stopped by the H & E Marina Deli we were looking for some sandwiches to go for our flight back home. Didn't get a taste of them until we were on the plane and then kicked ourselves for not ordering seconds or thirds. Been back to the H & E 3 times and looking forward to our next visit in January. Have met the store owner who works in the store and loves to talk to his customers. Deli does a huge take-out business. Inside dining is like a Mom & Pop operation. You order at the counter, find a seat, and the guy making your order will yell out any questions he has from over the counter while he's slicing your meat. Think we've tasted about every side available there by now and loved every one of them as well as the atmosphere of the place. You'll find the deli in the back, right corner of the shopping center as you stand on 17th. Dianne Customers

michmike Posted September 25, 2007 #14 Share Posted September 25, 2007 As others are inclined to say... your mileage may vary...BUT we ate at Carlos and Pepe's last time we were in Ft Lauderdale (Oct 06) and it was marginal at best. Food was so so and service was non-existant. Not an experience we will repeat.
megr1125 Posted September 25, 2007 #15 Share Posted September 25, 2007 i saw that deli once..didn't make it to eat but i walked by at breakfast and the food looked good...and IIRC it was cheap..... i now what you mean about bad pizza....heck, the water in the shower was a lovely shade of brown!! the sign in the bathroom at the renaissance said it is clean, safe and normal.... :p
alonzo14 Posted September 26, 2007 #16 Share Posted September 26, 2007 Thanks so much Bequia for all your valuable information. I have another question for you. We are staying at the Renaissance on 17th in Decmeber. Where does the Sun Trolley pickup? We will be going to the Harbour Shops. Where do we catch the Trolley from there? Will we have to cross the street coming back from the Harbour Shops to get back to the Renaissance?

We will be going to the Harbour Shops. Where do we catch the Trolley from there? Will we have to cross the street coming back from the Harbour Shops to get back to the Renaissance? It's stops anywhere you flag it down, there are no designated stops per se. You'll see it pass by thefront of all of the Harbor Shop stores, just flag it down, it'll stop for you. Remember if you miss one, the next comes by in 15 minutes. If you get off across the street from the Renaissance then you'll have to cross the street (no big deal). If you stay on it will continue on it's route and eventually pass by the Renaissance again. Just one big loop, a cheap 50 cent sightseeing tour if you stay on for the complete loop. http://www.suntrolley.com/maps/convention.html ///////////////
