Cruise Junky Posted September 28, 2007 #2 Share Posted September 28, 2007 What happens to your price if you booked 6 months ago? You can ask your Canadian TA to transfer your booking to US Funds.
peteranddan Posted September 28, 2007 #3 Share Posted September 28, 2007 Today the CDN dollar closed above the US dollar. I called earlier this week and had them change my account over to US dollars as they were charging me approximately 12.5% exchange on the Canadian dollar. The transaction went poorly unfortunately. I ended up loosing my onboard credit, but after sending an email off to Mr. Hanaran, it was all fixed and I saved approximately $1000! ladysail2 Posted September 29, 2007 #5 Share Posted September 29, 2007 I can't decide whether to pay off my cruise for March '08.....I owe about $2200......I have just about all of the funds in a savings account in CAN $$.....and now that our dollar is so good...it sounds like a wise move....what would you do?? It is already booked with a US TA Joyce
Susan-M Posted September 29, 2007 #6 Share Posted September 29, 2007 What would you do?? I would either convert the Cdn $ to U.S $ and keep it in a U.S. account in my Cdn bank until March, or if fees are too high for a U.S. account, I would probably pay off the cruise now. Our dollar may continue to climb, but it may also drop .... so it really comes down to how much you like to gamble. I'm not a gambler and I'm comfortable with where the dollar is at now. I have a U.S. $ bank account at a Cdn bank and have been buying U.S. $ as I would rather keep my money in the bank and pay for the cruise when it is due. However, the fees for a U.S. account can be high depending on which bank you use and the amount that you have on deposit - TDCT does not charge fees for an account with $3000+. newbiefromvancouver Posted September 29, 2007 #7 Share Posted September 29, 2007 The cruise I'm interested in is 18% higher in CDN than USD on the Celebrity website! Full price is $650USD or $770CDN. Thats alot of extra $$$ that Celebrity is trying to steal from us Canadians.

The exchange rate varies depending on the cruise ... not sure why this is. Luckily we have the choice of booking in U.S. or Cdn $ ... although it seems that almost always it's more advantageous to book in U.S. $. Steamboatin Posted September 29, 2007 #9 Share Posted September 29, 2007 This thread brings back memories. Was stationed in the State of Maine with the USAF back in the early 60's when the Canadian dollar was worth $1.06 US. So it was costly for us on our "little" salary to visit Canada back in those days.

Thank you, Susan-M, I just might do that. I think the fee on a US acct at TDCT is about $2 a month...but I'll check into it. I don't have long before final payment anyway. I'm not a gambler either....just want the best advantage....:p Steamboatin'....I remember my first shopping trip to Port Huron, MI....and the dollar was at par.....and my $1 allowance went a long way back then! That was after the early 60's, but too long after.

Thats alot of extra $$$ that Celebrity is trying to steal from us Canadians. In fairness to Celebrity (and all the lines to some extent) I don't think anyone foresaw a year ago that the C$ would be at par (never mind closing today at a premium) to the US$. I think "stealing" is a bit strong. As Susan pointed out, the exchange rate used by X (and RCI) varies from itinerary to itinerary. I'm not sure why that should be, but it does, so have your TA check the comparable pricing. At this point the only line that will not allow Canadian bookings in US$ is Princess, unless you are willing to travel from a US gateway. NCL will not let you book direct in US$ but you can book in US$ from Canada through most wholesalers (Encore etc). As a general rule the lines won't let you change currency after you book (the earlier post notwithstanding) so make sure your TA does their homework on this before you put your deposit down. Ontario Cruiser Posted September 29, 2007 #12 Share Posted September 29, 2007 Princess will allow you to book in US funds as long as you don't book air with them or if eg like us flying to LA then from LA to Papeete you can then book the air from LAX to PPT with them. I just changed my cdn booking to US last week. Ontario cruiser. Also Celebrity has cdn resident's specials from time to time. We are on the Summit Nov 9th to Hawaii.:)
BobBeaSea Posted September 29, 2007 #13 Share Posted September 29, 2007 Celebrity isn't trying to steal from us although, like their cousin RCI, the exchange rate can vary quite a bit when looking at multiple sailings. It will take a long time for businesses, not just cruise companies, to catch up...if ever. For the present, try and book in U.S. funds.

I have been booking my cruises with Celebrity in USD for the past 2 years. No problem with the air in USD either. I book directly with them. I am not sure where people have gotten the idea that being Canadian doesn't allow you to book in USD.

If I recall correctly, if you book originally from Canada, Celebrity charges you in $CD. If you later try to have the charges changed to $US, they will not allow you to do it. I guess it is less complicated for them to keep track of. You should check around. If you prefer to book in USD, there are plenty of Canadian TA's that will do that for you. If not book with X directly. No problemo!
tuggers Posted October 2, 2007 #18 Share Posted October 2, 2007 My ta books lots of my Canadian friends, air included. She has never had a problem and my friends get a good deal. I was in a casino in Halifax last week and had to change my $20USD to Canadian. I got back $19.20. I saved the receipt because it's not an everyday occurance! If you want to talk to my ta, email me. She might have some insight on the air.
