HELP! Booked Riviera R342 for Christmas on CB - never cruised before

Hi all,

i'm new to this thread and am absolutely horrified after reading that the Riviera is the worst deck to be on in terms of noise. We are in Room 342, so it seems to be directly under the high traffic area. But since we've never cruised before, we didn't know about this problem. ANd what makes it worse, we have our 15 month old light sleeper daughter coming with us?!? Any suggestions??? Can we change our room still? Would taking an air filter or something help with the noise?? I'm getting worried. Thanks for your help.

PAM-MYBABYCRUISE - I was in 334 two rooms down from where you are. I am a light sleeper and the noise did bother me a bit. It was most obvious to me during the day, but I still got those naps in because I was so tired from being up late. Though the noise was a problem, I had a great cruise nonetheless, well, because it was a cruise!:) However, I cannot answer the question for you, but we no longer book on the Riviera deck unless it will be under one of the Lido deck cabins. As for moving your cabin, check with you TA to see what is available.

Good luck to you.

Have been under the pool deck on a Carnival ship and while I think there was a little noise from above, honestly, it wasn't much. Maybe very early or very late there would be some noise from deck chairs being placed but I don't think you'll hear basic foot traffic. And I would guess that you're better off being forward of the misship elevators than back further closer to the MUTS pool and buffet.

I think a small fan would be great for some 'white noise' to help your little one sleep.

Have a terrific cruise---we're on the ship the week after you!

Since this will be your first cruise you may not be aware that there is a very slight rocking motion that results from wave motion while at sea, so your evenings and sea days while the ship is moving should have that really soothing rocking to help everyone sleep (Mom and Dad as well).

We haven't sailed the CB but have had cabins under the pool deck where MUTS is on other ships. In our experience the sound disturbance was minimal, even on the balcony. We did get some late afternoon chattering from people moving tables and/or chairs once - enough to wake us from a nap. The "high traffic area" seems to be over the end of the cabin where the bathroom is.

If you are really concerned about the sound then by all means research another cabin soon.

If you're gonna worry about the possible noise than call your TA and see if any other rooms are still available that you can move to. If not, take a filter or fan with you to muffle the noise if there is any.

Please remember that much about a cruise is subjective and many people stay on the the Riveria deck every week and have no problem with noise.

Enjoy your first cruise :)

Hello,

Your cabin is next door to one of the ship's most expensive suites. Generally, ship designers will never put expensive suites where excessive noise is a possibility.

The only problem with noise that I can see, is that during the day you may hear some people moving around an occasional deck chair on the Lido deck up above.

It should be relatively quiet from approximately 6:00 PM in the afternoon as people go in to dinner or dress for the later seating, until 7-8:00 AM or later when after breakfast, they come out to sit outside and soak up the sun. Your cabin is under an area that has deck chairs, not the casino or the theater or the bandstand, or a bar or other places where noise is generated.

If you are concerned, see your TA or call Princess directly and see what else is available.

And noise is subjective...what is noise to one person may not bother another person at all. A 15 month old baby should not be affected by this. One of the joys of a cruise is the gentle rocking motion of a ship. And if the baby really fusses there are lots of places you can go and sit with the baby until he or she falls asleep.

Hope that this helps.

Fred

Hello,

Please ignore my last post. Too many CCers have reported that noise is a problem and accordingly contact your TA or Princess directly, and find a cabin that has cabins above you and below you. Make sure that they know that you have a baby with you.

I was trying to be helpful but in this situation I was not correct.

Why do people give out their room number, with the ship and sailing they are on! It seems dangerous to me, would you tell hundreds of random people where your house or hotel room was?
This is off the subject of the original post, which was a concern about noise - with the only way to provide an answer being if one knew the location of the cabin.

Of course everyone has their own sense of boundaries and security - certainly it is Very Bad to publish one's home address when away on vacation. I have heard that cruise lines are no longer printing a person's cabin number on their cruise card for similar reasons - personal security.

I am well aware that my response had nothing to do with noise level. Perhaps though, some people don't think about posting such personal info online. I felt it was a valid point to bring up, and perhaps people would think twice in the future about giving out such information. :)

As for the noise, no you don't have to give out the exact room number, you could say I am on the whatever deck, however I am worried about the proximity to the kitchen (etc.) does anyone know which cabins may hear noise from there? ;)

Hmmm the difference, which I think is quite obvious, is one thing gives out your location, the other doesn't.

No need to get snippy. If you are comfortable giving out your room number to a thousand strangers, good for you!

I just know, especially after watching a show on rapes on Cruise Ships, that I wouldn't. I was trying to be nice, and give out a warning, in case people hadn't thought of the dangers of giving out such information.

You obviously don't want polite advice.

I hope you enjoy your cruise though :)

There are TV stations that play soothing music. I turn them on sometimes when trying to nap in the afternoon on a cruise.

We've had cabins on the Aloha Deck of the Golden Princess--both an inside cabin and a balcony. We did not have any major problems with noise.
