Favorite Bartender?

On the Gem, back in January, we had the BEST bartender. His name was Suantara (sp?). He worked at Bali Hai during the day but in Maltings at night. He did the whiskey tastings and was SO friendly and knowledgeable! My hubby learned so much about whiskey from this man.

Also, I totally forgot to go to the martini tasting one night and it was the last one they were offering...and he made a special martini tasting just for me, even though he didn't even man the martini bar. It was delicious!

We have a few favorites...Rodel, who we met on the Pearl in 2008. The following year, also on the Pearl, we ran into him at Star Bar and he remembered us! He recognized us first. Remembered our names. I found that quite impressive considering how many people he meets. We have since sailed on Epic twice while he and his wife were onboard and we have become friends. I stay in touch with her through facebook. Just great people! We also love Clarence "the Chocolate Cowboy" who we have sailed with on the Pearl and also Epic. And well, of course the infamous Bong! So much fun. Love his magic tricks. And last but not least, Julio Calix who we met earlier this year on Getaway. Great guy and makes the best Coconut mojito. We are hoping to see some of them, if not all of them in a few days on Getaway. :)

  • 1 month later...

On the Getaway December 6, I joined 2 tastings with each of Bong at the Sugarcane Bar (mojito and martini) and Darwin at the Sunset Bar (beer and margarita). All were a lot of fun and informative. Hope to see them on future cruises.

Clarense the Chocolate Cowboy is the best! We took him ashore to the Sunset Bar/Grill at Maho Beach on our October Getaway cruise. He makes a mean Mojito but we first met him on the Gem several years ago. That was our 5th cruise with him and he is like family. Bong was working the inside Mojito bar on the Getaway so we finally got to meet him after hearing so much about him. Its too bad they are both on the same ship because I would have enjoyed hanging out with Bong too.

I started reading this thread and realized it was an old thread but it is still relevant today. Tomct is a friend of mine having met through here, now we see each other at Uconn basketball games. Tom, I have a couple nice bottles of JW Blue and Explorer series at my house if you really get thirsty.

As an aside the price on Blue is way down, I think it was 2/ $250 on the Getaway in October.

I loved Ikim and Sylvia in The Sun. My all-time favorite was on The Jewel in 2011. I don remember his name, but he told riddles. I sat with him for hours trying to solve them - so long that my husband was running around the ship worried because I was missing! Such an entertainer. I bought a ridiculous amount of margaritas thanks to his puzzles. I wish I knew his name and where he is now. I would love to see him again.

Wayan Arjana. Wayan was on the Pearl for a long time. I believe he's on the Gem now. Not only is Wayan a super bartender...he is just a super nice guy. Ya hear that NCL??? :D

Will look for Wayan on our next cruises....thanks for his name. Our favorite bartender from the Gem (Levi) is now on BA, so we needed a new one

Thanks again

I've met some fantastically wonderful bar servers during these recent years sailing NCL, and some of them over multiple ships each.

Right at the very top of the list is Lorelie and Jonathan (Bong) who always made me feel welcome at their bars as well as on the ship in general. Luckily they share some duties at Sugar Cane Mojito Bar, so I was able to enjoy their personalities, and expertise, each and every day of the sailing. :)

I, too, hope they will both move to Norwegian Escape (which they'd like to do) so I can see them again much later this year.

When we went on the Pearl in 2007 we met Julio Calix who was our pool server. He took such great care of us and never let our drinks get empty. He'd even have our drinks waiting every day when we'd arrive for happy hour.

In 2012 we went on the Epic and had our very first drink of the cruise at the pool bar. The bartender had this huge grin on his face when he poured our drinks. My husband turned to me and said he would swear that was Julio. When he came back we asked him if he had worked on the Pearl 5 years earlier. The huge smile came back on his face and he said "Mr Erik, I knew that was you!" It was amazing he remembered our names 5 years later and was like a family reunion. I guess the big tip we game him the first cruise paid off because he made sure all the bartenders at the pool bar knew us and took good care of us to the point that they would find us by the pool if two barstools opened up.

We're going back on Epic this spring but last I heard Julio had been promoted and is now on one of the newer ships.

Julio is my FAVORITE person on Norwegian. Ever. We met him in 2013 on Epic. Then I did a ship tour in NY on Breakaway and ran into him. He immediately recognized me and asked for my hubs (who wasn't with me). He said he would still be onboard when we sailed in October (2013), but he left halfway through our week for vacation before the Getaway opening. He's AMAZING. his wife also works onboard. They're both onboard Getaway now. I'm friends with him on FB (although he's not on much). He has been promoted to head bartender I believe. I cannot wait to see him again. He's a great bartender, but beyond that, he's an amazing person. My hubs and I spent the first 2 days of our Breakaway trip at his bar at uptown bar and grille. It was the highlight of our cruise - he's just amazing.
