wine onboard ncl

the alcohol policy on ncl is confusing. Does anyone know-are you able to bring on "a bottle or two" of wine for consumption in your stateroom?? Some sites say yes, others are a little more vague.

Please help, thank you!!

If you put it in your carry bag, the x-ray person will advise the "corkage person" that you have bottles of wine. You will be directed to the corkage table where you sign a charge slip for $15/bottle & "corkage fee paid" stickers are put on you bottles. Painless! If you place them in your checked luggage & you are caught, you will go to the naughty room, claim the wine & pay the fee there. Your choice.:)

Thanks, I was thinking of just putting it in a wine tote and carrying it with me. I guess that will work.

I'm not sure when you "declare" your wine -- hopefully someone with experience will come along?

I had a friend on the Gem 1/5 sailing who repeatedly tried to declare her bottle of champagne, but she reports that no one seemed to care. ;)

Hey, if you can not figure out WHERE to pay, or nobody wants to take your money - no problem.

Save your money!

Not sure what the issue is?

Or you may order your wine before your cruise with a bar set-up.

Just a $3.00 service charge for delivery to your cabin for the total order:)

No need to pre-order. You can do it when you board the ship. Same price. (for wine)

We brought our wine onboard the Sun last week. There is a security x-ray line that you will go through, just like at the airports. Once you pass through the x-ray, and they detect your wine with the x-ray, they will direct you to the table that is set up right past the x-ray station. There you give them your roomkey and they will put stickers on your wine bottles for you, signifying that you have paid the corkage fee, and give you the receipt for the $15 corkage fee that will be charged to your stateroom. We were actually escorted by security to the corkage fee table once they detected by x-ray that we had wine, so it was pretty easy for us.

I just contacted NCL about preordering wine and having it delivered to my room on the Jewel. There is a 15% gratuitity added to all bottle prices. Perhaps it is different when ordering bottles of liquor.

When we boarded the Norwegian Star in Honolulu, the line was selling a wine package, 6 bottles, at a discounted price. We bought their package and were never charged a corkage fee. I'm not sure if you can bring any on board in your luggage. Since we flew, we didn't want to pack any in our luggage for fear of breakage. I would ask your TA and read the docs for their officail answer to your question.

We were on the NCL Spirit. My brother had two bottles of wine in his luggage. (He did not know it was not allowed). His luggage was not delivered to his room. He had to go to the "naughty" room to collect. (Actually he said the employees were very nice!) He was told he could pay the corkage fee or the wine would be held for him until the end of the cruise.

So if you are bringing the wine onboard, perhaps you should let them know as you as checking in. It will save you some time later.

If it is in the checked luggage, there is no way to notify anyone.

So you have to pay a $15 fee per bottle to drink it in your room? If it is for "Corkage" then are they going to send someone to my room to screw off the cap and pour it into a glass? It seems that if there is no service involved, we should be able to enjoy a drink of wine or asti in the cabin at our leisure? I have already paid for the bottles at the store, at less than $10 per bottle, this fee would now make it $25 per bottle. It just does not seem right.

Please...

It does not matter that you already paid for it. Of course you have.

They have two options.

1) To NOT allow any wine onboard unless purchased through the ship. Period.

or

2) Charge the $15 to make up for the lost profit or whatever you want to call it.

Do not push too hard, or the answer will be #1 above. You really do not want that do you?

We would like to bring a small box of wine 3L. So if we carry it on and tell them we have it... pay the corkage fee... then we can take it to our room? How much will they charge for the box?

Based on real life experiences reported here over the past two years, the official rule is $15 per 750ml. That means a large bottle is $30. You MIGHT pay for more or less.

Good luck.

The X-Ray sees all including large bottles of any liquid. On the majesty we had to go to the naughty room over a big bottle of shampoo.

With wine/large bottles. When we fly to the port we pack all liquids in the checked bags then I take them out of the checked bags and put them in another carry on bag to take to the ship. When you go through security they see all the liquids and pull you aside to check your bag. You go to the table and sign for the $15 dollar charge.

To put in in perspective. A wine I drink all the time is sold on the Gem, and it is one of the lowest priced on the menu.

Chateau Ste. Michelle $31

Columbia Valley, Washington State, USA 2005

With the 15% bar fee it comes to 35.65 a bottle

It costs me around $10 a bottle at home. When I tried to pay the corkage they didn't let me bring on that bottle but held it till the end of the cruise.

The other wine that cost me $10 a bottle I paid the $15 fee and still saved money on the ship price.

Why would they let you NOT bring on one bottle (and pay the 'corkage' fee), but let you bring on a different kind?

The whole thing frustrates me (it really should be called a 'carry on' fee); however, the rules are the rules so one must play or find another playground!! :-)

I requested (and received) a wine list from NCL for an upcoming Majesty trip. I am guessing I will pay the 'corkage' fee.

A second question....if one does bring on wine and pays the corkage fee, then can you take the bottle to the dining room with you for dinner? And, if so, and it is taken unopened, is there an additional 'corkage fee' for them to actually pull the cork?

This is our first time on NCL and we are just trying to learn the rules and follow. We are usual WindStar cruisers but are dong a quick get away.

Thanks for any/all information.

Once you have paid the "corkage fee", you can basically do whatever you want with your bottle... drink it in your room, drink it on deck, bring to the dining room, drink half, bring the other half to finish at the theatre, etc. etc. You pay the fee once only. It is the same as if you had bought the bottle from them.

Thanks for the wine info....sounds like I have a plan!! Now I just need an additional suitcase :-)

It seems like the prices to order from the ship for bar setup (this would basically be one bottle of booze for DH) is extravagant. Can you just purchase a bottle once you board and use it in your room (this would not be something he takes around like me and my wine :-) )

Thanks for the continuing information. I like to be prepared and not have to spend my whole week 'figuring it out'.

I received a wine list today! I just asked the cruise coordinator to fax it to me and she did. The lowest price I see is $24. But you have to remember there is 15% gratuity, plus tax if applicable.

This is not ordered thru the bar set up, but rather as a "gift", from a different department. The order form can be used and faxed (I think the fax number varies depending on your ship).

I tried to post this pdf document, but it is too large for this format. Just email your ship's coordinator and ask for it, they can send it to you. Remember their email address is: ShipcoordinatorXXXX@ncl.com Replace the xxxx with the name of your ship (eg: Jewel)

I also was able to pre-order the soda card for my son as well as the Teen Smoothie Plan (whatever it's called). They said it would all be waiting in the cabin when we get there!
