Frodo -

So kind of you to take the time to post this. My kids (dd12 & ds14) have been asking about the types of activities they can expect on our Alaskan cruise in June. Have never cruised before, so this is a big help!

Happy Friday! 51 days to go before the Oosterdam!!:D

You are all very welcome. I know how curious I was about everything before this cruise and this was a way to "give back" to all the folks who answered my questions. I type approx 100 words a min so this was not to bad for me.

While I was typing this, I realized that the Club HAL kids I had seen at the show and getting ice cream were the Tweens. My daughter was a lot taller than the group, the situation was the same on RCCL where the kids marveled at how tall she is. She just did not want to be embarrased. She is also 12 y.o in the 7th grade, so with her height 5' 4.5" and her being accostumed to being with older children, she just opted out of the program. The kids all looked to be having a great time when I saw them, so I am sure the program is excellent.

I don't know what they showed a movie night, but there were a good mix of in cabin movies including Bee Movie, Akela and the Bee and Looney Toons Back in action. I believe the staff picks a movie from their DVD collection and I am sure if you let them know what your standards for your child are, they will keep it in mind when selecting one. If you are like me, the rating is only a guidline for me, I want to know what the content is before I allow my kids to see something.

Frodo - wish you were coming on the Oosterdam in June. Seems like our girls would get along great! My DD just turned 12 as well and 5'5.5" - she is way taller than her friends/classmates. Was she able to go to the older group? My dd tends to have older friends as well.

Thx - Shawna

Wow, I had been searching everywhere for some idea on what the kids activities would be. Thank you so much!!

I too am wondering if my 12 year old can join in with his 14 year old brother. I was told by my TA that she didn't think so but as with everything else........would an extra tip help?

Also, if there are not that many kids on board, we are in Alaska in June, would they really mind?

On the few occasions she was up there, my 12 y.o. went with the teen group. No one questioned her, she had already removed her muster station bracelet (shhhhh) so with her height there was no reason for anyone to question her age. If your child obviously looks 12 y.o. the staff may not allow your daughter to join her brother.

muster station bracelet

Please tell me more about the muster station bracelets. What are they made of and are they comfortable to wear? If not, my daughter will probably rip it off first chance she gets. She absolutely cannot wear those paper stick-on bracelets at amusement parks. We usually put it on her ankle instead, outside her socks, where she can't feel it. When she isn't wearing socks we pick a different amusement park that doesn't require bracelets. (Then again, she's getting older. Maybe it won't be an issue this year.)

The bracelets are made of plastic and per the agent at the desk, the only way to get it off is to cut it off. You are allowed to put it on yourself to make sure it is comfortable, the arm or ankle are fine. I don't know if it is the policy or if some check in agents are more dilligent than others, but she made my daughter put it on at the check in desk.

Just returned from the Oosterdam today, and our 12 yr. old son LOVED the Club HAL activities. There was a small group of kids onboard, but enough for him to make friends. He participated in the tween group, and I was glad. We gave him some freedom to move about the ship on his own (as in you can stay in the Internet Cafe for one hour, then meet us here, or go to Club HAL, etc.)

As for the Loft, I'm not sure how great it was. I did see the programming and the activities seemed cool, however it seemed that I kept seeing the same teens roaming the ship aimlessly looking for mischief. I'm not sure if that is HAL's fault or the parents though. I'm not sure why you would even take you child on a trip if you were just going to let them be on their own the whole time?! Either way, I was glad my son was still with the tweens in what appeared to be a more structured environment. He loved it was very sad to leave the ship this morning!

I am really unclear as to why the wrist bands are a problem. They may also be worn on the ankle. Yes, the agent will put them on when you check-in; HAL takes this seriously. They don't have to be put on tightly. My kids didn't complain, but before we cruised they knew they were going to have to wear them or no cruise. End of story.

Our experience with Club HAL on the Zuiderdam was absolutely no moving up in groups. They are well aware of your child's age, so it doesn't matter how old they look. Tips are not going to work; it's HAL's rules and I really don't think someone is going to put their job in danger. You could move down, but not up. The Loft was usually empty and none of the organized activities were ever done, that I saw. My 13 year old had a great time anyway playing the video games, as we don't allow this much at home. He would go to the younger group when they were doing an activity he liked.

You also have an option of signing your kids up for the Culinary Arts program and they can take a cooking class (extra charge).

Good to know! Moving down would be fine too. We were going to go next year when they would be able to be together but the price and timing was perfect so we bumped it up a year. Hopefully it will be fun for them for mom's mandatory cruise naptimes!:)

This is our first time on HAL. We have done 3 other lines and have never had braclets before. We wear them for the whole cruise? That's new information, thank you.
