Which ship hit Pier 90 (NYC) this morning???

Interesting for two reasons: harbor pilot was on board, and the weather simply could not have been nicer. Wonder who is going to take the blame.

Apparently the river's current makes it a lot more difficult than what meets the eye.

It was the Spirit. I was trying to disembark from the Dawn at the time, and they were holding people up in order to ensure the pier was structurally sound. That, coupled with Fleet Week, created one heck of a congestion problem at the pier!

Does anyone know if the Ship was docking under Her own power or was a tug boat involved?

Most cruise ships including the Spirit don't use Tugs....the tug boat people have an expression for this which I can't use on this board.

tug - it rhymes with smuckers....

They dock using bow thrusters and their own engines and props.

Cruise ships generally can dock under their own power.

They have fore and aft side thrusters, and can basically turn a complete circle in place.

It's possible the river current pushed it somewhat, but they should have been able to compensate for that.

The Captain of the ship is always responsible for everything that happens aboard the ship, although the local pilot is also responsible to avoid accidents.

The pilot of the Chinese freighter who ran a Chinese ship into the Bay Area Bridge was fined and had his license revoked.

Docking a ship is always a difficult situation. There's many docking incidents every year.

The Spirit's got a boo-boo, but I'd imagination they'll have the radar issue resolved soon enough.

Did you notice the time on your webcam shot? 10:46AM :D

WNBC-TV has a good news story about this online. In it they have video shot from a cell phone which shows the crash.

The news story is in the bottom video window.

Thanks! Now that's a decent report!

I'm also of the impression that the ship hit the pier upstream from where she was docking.

Interesting for two reasons: harbor pilot was on board,

I've been told the harbor pilot only takes control of the ship during a Panama Canal transit, at other times he is only there to offer advice and answer questions. If true, it means the ship's officers were in control during the docking.

Go figure Boston would be getting yet another ship that hit something! The NCL Dream has hit something twice (most recently last year) and now sails from Boston and now this on the NCL Spirit. It's a minor fender bender though on the NCL Spirit compared to the damage done by the NCL Dream which had some serious bow damage in both collissions.

That's what I thought at first, but then started thinking the "filmer" is actually looking south, or downstream, and the ship is really not turned properly to enter the slip.

Anybody knows what will happen to the next departure date on the Spirit? I am worried: we are suppose to sail the Spirit on June 22... I don't feel very secure about all that.

It left on time on Sunday. The damage is minor. The probably would have painted it before the ship left port but were told to leave it alone as someone may need to look at it. The Damage to Pier 90 was minor(its going to be refurbished any way)...

Its like a fender bender with your car. It doesn't have to be repaired and it won't affect the ships operations. They replaced the cable that was damaged to the forward radar...

I doubt it will effect the next sailing...

It has already turned around and is now on a six-day Bahamas and Florida cruise. It is out in the open ocean now and will be in Port Canaveral tomorrow.

That image is definitely reversed. We were coming in with pier 90 on the portside and pier 88 (our goal) starboard, starting the clockwise rotation, but the northward momentum--or currents or human error, perhaps--sent us crashing into pier 90 with the tip of the bow before there was sufficient rotation to get the ship properly aligned.

Yes, the Spirit has thrusters, and she did hit the upstream pier 90 dock.

From ship technology

"For manoeuvrability, the ship is equipped with two bow thrusters, one stern thruster and two spade rudders. During sea trials, she completed a full turn within four lengths of the ship while sailing at full speed."

We were on Deck 12 starboard aft watching our docking of the SPIRIT and the tugboat's work as it "nudged" the SPIRIT (which we didn't "feel") so that we could turn the corner around Pier 88. We soon felt a slight "bump" and heard a noise...but it wasn't much different from what we felt in our aft-wake-facing cabin when the ship's engines were started as we left each of our Ports Of Call. We thought it was just some "reverse thrusters" that were engaged to put the ship on the correct trajectory to align it parallel to Pier 88 (were we were to dock). The CARNIVAL MIRACLE was barely ahead of us as the two ships sailed in. At one point, from our aft vantage point, it looked like the MIRACLE wouldn't get out of the way fast enough for our SPIRIT to make the turn into the piers.

We left the ship at about 11:20 am and had no idea of what had transpired. There weren't any announcements that we heard...nor was there any "scuttle-butt" being mentioned amongst the passengers or crew members. It wasn't until we had secured an Airport Shuttle Van to take us to JFK, that we heard about the mishap. We took pictures of the SPIRIT while we awaited transportation at the pier and didn't see anything wrong. We first learned of the "crash" from other SPIRIT passengers that were on our Airport Shuttle. One man had pictures that he had taken from the pier, which showed the damage to the pier and the bow of the SPIRIT. He said that crew members immediately reported to the "scene" to make repairs. I'll have to take "zoomed" look at my pictures to see if anything shows up! As our van drove us to JFK, it was eerie listening to a news report on the radio. Now I can understand why people on the Titanic weren't too concerned at first...I guess when something as big as a ship runs into something, the impact is miniscule compared to that of a car collision (which I've also been through)!

Our cruise was a great adventure...right to the end!

Thanks JoJo for posting those two pictures...say "HI" to Lindsey for us!
