I live in Copenhagen - can give advice

Recommended Posts

hey Pia!

not sure about any specific restaurant in Tivoli - they are all good (EXCEPT the Pirate ship as I mentioned before. only eat there if your toddler forces you. LOL).

I'm sure there is a German Restaurant in Tivoli.... but not one that stands out as a MUST EAT to me anyway.

I will ask around for any die hard recommendations.

.

OMG.....here I am quoting you. :) I must be recalling eating in a German (at least I thought it was) restaurant while in Tivoli in 1996. Anyhow, it was wonderful (albeit expensive even back then) with great outdoor seating too.

Come to think of it - there is a nice little German restaurant that has outdoor seating VERY close to the new Cold Stone Creamery! :D Haven't personally eaten there yet, but it was packed, so that is always a good sign!

Do you know the prices to the attractions along the way on the HOHO bus.

if you get the CPH card, MOST are free - and you get a discount on the HOHO tour itself.

You can visit the website where you get the CPH card and it will give you a breakdown of what all the admission costs are and if they are free or discounted with the CPH card.

To whet your appetite - here are a smattering of FREE things with the CPH card:

DK Aquarium (vs. 90kr adult/ 45kr kid)

Casino Copenhagen (inside Tivoli) (80kr adults, no kids allowed)

CPH Zoo (120KR/ 60KR)

Round Tower (25/ 5)

Louisiana Art Museum (90kr 17+)

Ny Carlsburg Glpptotek (art museum) (50KR)

Amalienborg TOUR (55kr)

Amber Museum (25/ 10)

Rosenborg (65kr)

So .... it is really my opinion that if you plan on doing some heavy sightseeing, using the HOHO, and possibly any bus/trains - the CPH card is the way to go.

Otherwise, paying "a la carte" is just fine too. Really depends on your schedule.

All entry fees to museums, etc are on their websites - so you can easily plan out your budget for admission, etc.

:D

Just was driving downtown today and saw a favorite hotel of mine - The Adina!

Why I didn't think of this before is beyond me. They are very near to the piers and Osterport station (no worries of train track noise though - so probably a better location for MOST than the Comfort Inn on the tracks!).

They have studio, one and two bedrooms available... they also feature a GREAT restaurant with a wonderful weekend buffet brunch (we go often) and a nice pool.

www.adina.dk

I'm glad to happened to mention this one.....we are booked there next month.....trip advisor.com has that as one of the best hotels in CPH.

Is there a grocery store type thing right near by you know of where you can pick up misc. items ??

Thank you in advance for your reply along with all the other great/prompt replies you've been giving people! This is a heck of a resource

Thanks so much for the great information. We're debating on renting bikes at Osterport Station or just using the bus system. I am confused a bit on the buses. You recommended bus 52 from Tivoli to the pier, but I don't see that bus route on the map. The only route from the pier area I see even coming close to Tivoli is 26 which goes up Langgade St. Can you confirm that bus 52 makes the trip from pier to Tivoli?

Also, if we were to rent bikes, how do you keep them from walking off while you're visiting various sites? Are there lockable bike racks, or do you also rent bike locks when you rent the bikes?

Hi Jen, Thank you so much for your detailed response to my questions about touring Copenhagen with children - I appreciate all the info! I'm also curious about Legoland - I've read that the one in Denmark is better than the one in Windsor in England and since we will be visiting both countries in the upcoming year I'm wondering if we should pick one location over the other. How far is Legoland from Copenhagen and do you think it's a worthwhile trip? Do you know if girls like it as well as boys (neither of my girls are builders)?

Another crazy question - do you happen to know of any English language children's books about or set in Denmark? I like to have my daughters read ahead of time about the places they are visiting (they are currently 11 and 5).

Thanks again for all the great info,

Lisa

Thanks for the compliment!

Anyway - - YES! There is a NETTO grocery store RIGHT at the Adina. Literally. Its on the bottom "floor", you do have to go outside, but it's RIGHT there.

We use the hotel for a TON of people, and I'm there frequently - - it's a great spot!

So sorry about that - - bus 52 was a misprint. it IS bus 26. I am sorry for the confusion.

Bus 26 will take you from the pier (Langilinie) to Radhuspladsen or Hovedbanegarden - both of which are VERY close to Tivoli.

The bikes that you would rent all come with their own bike locks right on them.

If you're not going to use them to really "cruise the city", then I would take the bus instead. Just so you don't have to worry about where you left your rented bike. :D

Hey Lisa!

We've not yet been to Legoland - but it is on the agenda for later this month. Everyone that I have talked to from England says that it's WAYYYYY better than the one in Windsor. (after all - Legos are DANISH!).

It is a good distance from CPH though - you would need to leave at about 7am to get there for 1ish - spend the night, and come back after a good day in the park the following day.

I've not heard from anyone who's done it in a day. We're planning on taking 3 or 4 days and combining in a trip to RIBE - Copenhagen's oldest city/town.

As far as books - YES! The one that I am currently looking for myself is:

NUMBER THE STARS by Lois Lowry (ages 8 - 12).

Its been HIGHLY recommended several times, and I just need to get myself to Amazon.com and get my own copy.

Freedom with Candles, you asked about shore excursions given by the different cruise ships. The Azamara Journey embarks and disembarks in Copenhagen and, as such, does not offer standard excursions there. However, they offer two end of tour itineraries, each with a choice of drop off at city centre or the airport. The "City of Copenhagen" tour rides past Town Hall Square, Tivoli Gardens, New Carlsberg Glyptoteque, National Museum, Christianborg Castle, old Stock Exchange Borsen, Amalienborg Palace, and Amaliehaven. Photo stops are made at the Little Mermaid and Amalienborg Palace. The cost is $58. The Royal Copenhagen tour visits Rosenborg Castle and Christiansborg Castle and passes by Amielienborg Palace, Royal Theatre, Town Hall and Tivoli Gardens. A photo stop is made at the Little Mermaid. The cost of this tour is $92. Hope this helps you.

Is it worthwhile to walk the Stroget on a Sunday when all the stores are closed? (My DH likes that idea!) Will restaurants be open? Would it be better to substitute the Resistance Museum and Little Mermaid or Christiansborg Palace and then walk the Stroget on Monday morning? Do the public busses run on Sundays in order to get to the museum? How far a trip is it from town centre (Tivoli-City Hall area)? If you have suggestions for a Sunday afternoon, it would be appreciated. Thanks for all your help.

FreedomwithCandles, I love all the ideas you are giving us! Thanks for all the expert advice. One more question, we're thinking of doing the ice bar at Hotel 27. Is it on a line of the HOHO bus? Mermaid line, perhaps? We are basically following your advice. HOHO to Rosenborg, Amalienborg, canal tour, Round Tower, Tivoli (if time), quick stop at Little Mermaid. And trying to squeeze in the Ice Bar but not if it's too far out of the way. I'm scared we'll run out of time! Our ship leaves at 4:00.

Thanks,

Debbie

Hi Freedom with Candles,

We appreciate all the information you have given in this thread. This must take quite a bit of your time.

We will be on the Crown Princess in two weeks. We have purchased a CPH card. We plan on taking the train from the airport to the central station. We are staying at the Palace. We will have two wheeled bags, and two smaller carry on bags. Do you think this will be a problem? Since you mentioned pickpockets, would wheeling these a few blocks to the hotel be risky? Two days later we will be boarding the ship. We plan on taking the train to the closest station which we have been told is Nordhavn. Then hail a cab. Apparently it is very close. Is all of this info correct? We sail from Freeport.

I understand that bus 26 does not operate on weekends. Is that correct? Since we will be in Copenhagen on a Friday and Saturday, will it be difficult to do any shopping. Are many shops open on Saturday past noon?

Thank you again for all your very helpful info.

Ellen

We are sailing on the Celebrity Constellation and our cruise ends in Copenhagen on Saturday July 12th. The cruise ship actually gets into Copenhagen on Friday July 11th at 12 noon. We must leave the ship early in the morning on Saturday. We are staying overnight on Saturday at the Airport Hilton Hotel. Our plan is to take our luggage off the ship on Saturday morning and bring it directly to the Hilton Airport hotel and then head back into downtown to continue our sightseeing. Our problem is deciding what sort of transportation pass or combination of HOHO buses, public transportation tickets to use. Since our trip is being broken up by the necessity of getting off the ship and bringing our luggage to the airport hotel. As passes seem to run in 24 hour periods, what do you suggest. We know we want to take a taxi on Saturday morning from the cruise ship with our luggage to the Hilton at the Airport and then I guess take the Metro back from the airport into downtown. How does the 10 ticket card work? I tried going on the website which explained all of this, but I couldn't figure out the number of zones between the airport and downtown, and what types of tickets could be used on the Metro from the airport and on the buses while downtown. I think our biggest problem is figuring out what combination of passes to buy for our 48 hour stay in Copenhagen. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks so much

Steve

Wow!

I am overwhelmed with everything I am learning.

We will be in CPH Aug 12 and sailing on the Eurodam on Aug 14th

We are at the Marriott which does not seem that out of the way on the map I have, and there is a HOHO stop in from of the Marriott

I have purchased a HOHO ticket already on line ofr $33 USD p/p, I did not see a choice of routes, so I assume it was for all 3 routes?? so maybe not huh??

I am considering buying a CPH card at airport, but will the train/bus take us near the Marriott ?? How will I know which train/bus to get on.? If I buy it a 2pm on the 12th will it be good until 2pm on the 13th? Does the 24 hrs start running at the first useage

I am a little concerned about not being able to use our credit cards in europe.

They told us the same thing in England last year, but merchants took them, they had to confirm it differently though. With Mastercard and Visa promoting themselves as accepted worldwide , this is not pleasant news.

I think we will be visitng the local grocery stores for breakfast items and maybe make some sandwiches for our lunches.

Debbie -

The IceBar requires a reservation - so if you don't have one, or don't plan on making one, then I would suggest not trying to go. You CAN show up, and HOPE to get in, but it may be a several hour wait.

I've not been yet, but know from friends that you go in "in shifts" - don your parka, etc. get your drink, and then have a certain amount of time before you have to leave so the next group can come in.

I would think that with the plans you have laid out there - - you won't have time for the ice bar. If you cut out the canal tour OR just do one or the other (HOHO OR Canal) then you would have time to sneak it in (again, call and set up a reservation first, You can also find out the best way to get to them).

LOL. Depends on what you want to DO while on the Sroget. If you want to SHOP - then don't go on Sunday.

If you're content with window shopping, and getting a coffee, pastry, and lunch along the way - then go on Sunday. SOME restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, etc. will be open on Sunday.

AND - SOME stores are open on Sunday. MOST are open on the 1st Sunday of the month too - so depending on when you are arriving, you can take that into consideration.

Since it's Tourist season, MORE and MORE stores are opening downtown on Sundays... so it's not as dead down there as it is during the winter.

one of my favorite Sunday things to do is to head out to Kronborg castle, see that, and then take the ferry over to sweden (all shops are open in Sweden on Sunday). From there you can either take the ferry back to where you started, or take the train up to Malmo ... and then take the train back in to copenhagen. It's an all day thing (especially if you do Malmo) -- but a neat way to do two countries.

otherwise - yes, we tend to do the stroget on Sunday just to window shop and people watch. It's much less crowded, and hubby has no fear of the credit card smoking by the time we're done. LOL

I think you will be fine. EVERYONE wheels luggage around the central station (Kobenhaven K) - so you will not be in the minority. Just keep a tight grasp and dial up your "travel smarts" and you will be fine.

We plan on taking the train to the closest station which we have been told is Nordhavn. Then hail a cab. Apparently it is very close. Is all of this info correct? We sail from Freeport.

Yes, from what I see. I've figured out where Freeport is, and that is the correct metro stop.

I understand that bus 26 does not operate on weekends. Is that correct?

No, I don't think that is correct at all. The bus operates all week long.

Since we will be in Copenhagen on a Friday and Saturday, will it be difficult to do any shopping. Are many shops open on Saturday past noon?

Most shops are open on Friday until about 6 or 7. The bigger ones till 8.

Saturday, don't plan on much being open past 4pm.

Thank you again for all your very helpful info.

Ellen

You're very welcome

Steve -

LOL. I don't think even the LOCALS understand what combination of cards, tickets, etc. are required to ride between the zones. We all just buy monthly passes and that covers all of our transportation.

You CAN use the "clip cards" for travel on the various trains - but yes, you have to figure out how many zones you are traveling on.

Two suggestions:

1) If you don't plan on doing a lot of the "attractions" that the CPH card covers - - then purchase an "ALL ZONE" clip card. This will give you 10 "trips" anywhere in town on any line. If there are 2 of you in your party, then you can clip the card twice (once for each of you) - - and you each get 5 trips. Make sense?

2) If you plan on seeing at least a few of the attractions that are valid with the CPH card, then price wise, it's a better deal to get the CPH card twice (one for each 24 hour period) than the 10clip "all zone" ticket.

Personally - - everyone that I bring around CPH gets a CPH card. It's just SO MUCH easier.

My personal motto is that "time is money" and I'd rather spend my time SEEING and DOING than standing in line trying to figure out how in the world to work the train system. Needing help, not finding anyone to give me that help (as a lot of the stations are not manned), etc.

I like being able to "go" whenever and wherever we please without having to worry if we have enough "clips" to get us there.

But - that may be just me.

It's not always the most economical way, but saving a few bucks vs. having the headaches... I'll save the headaches and spend the extra $$.

:D:D:D
