Disabled cabins

I am trying to arrange a cruise for next year on the Grand Princess. I want to book a disabled cabin that will accomodate three people. I have been told that there are only 2 cabins on the entire ship that will take 3 people. These are on Emerald Deck (E716 & E717). Does anyone know if this is the case?

Thanks

It sounds like what you are wanting is a handicapped room that will hold 3 people. Looking at the deck plans there are handicapped rooms on Dolphin deck (304 & 308) that indicate they will hold 4 people. I did not see any that held only 3 people, but there are several that hold up to 4 people. You might have to get one of those. It might depend on the type of room you want; i.e. balcony, inside, outside, etc.

Go to the Princess site and look at the ships deck plans.

How does princess handle it if you book a wheelchair accessible cabin and are not actually in need of it? I guess they don't require proof but I have never seen any comments on this before. Any experiences with this. There are so few of these, so just wondering.

Unfortunately this occurs. If you read the disabled boards you will note that most people with mobility problems need to book at least one year in advance to get an accessible cabin. I, being an optimist, hope to see the day when cabins have universal access features. By that I mean wider doors and ramped or no step bathrooms and balconies. As I have traveled down the mobility problem road I find I could manage in a standard cabin (and for many years did so even with my rolling walker) if only there were no step up into the bathroom/shower.

we are booked on the dimond and have a disabled cabin, dint know it was until i looked on the deck plans

As a parent of 2 kids in wheelchairs I am asking you to please change your room to a non handicap cabin.

There are less cabins then there are people that need them and on more then one occasion we have missed cruising because cabins were taken.

umm.. Handicap/wheelchair accessible cabins should be used for people who NEED them...not want them.

Celebrity does require a doctors letter before they will allow a person to book an accessible cabin whereas Princess does not and this is abused by far to many cruisers. My wife suffers from MS and does require such a cabin if only for the bathroom. So thru the selfishness and ignorance of able bodied people booking these cabins we are put in a position that we are unable to take some cruises that we would like to take. I only hope for people who book these cabins and don't need them is that some day that they really do need them.

I have posted this before, and been flamed in return.

On a Carnival cruise, we booked about three months out and got a “handicapped” cabin. At the time, we were assured that if someone in need wanted to book, we would be “bumped up” in category. As it happens, the booking stood.

I totally agree that these rooms should be held for anyone who NEEDS it. However I my case, I believe this cabin was the last available in the category we wanted.

The opposite view is impractical. forcing a ship to sail with empty cabins because no one with a mobility problem wants to cruise that week s foolish.

Thanks for your comments.Ive travelled on the Sea Princess for the last 2 yrs in a 3 berth interior cabin which i also had my motorized scooter & wheel chair in.I took a look around a disabled cabin & found plenty of room in them, the only problem was there was only 2 beds.I was informed by cabin steward that a roll in bed could be requested.Princess however say this is not possible. On the Grand Princess there are only 2 cabins on the entire ship to accomadate 3 persons.(these cabins consist of 2 single beds with a roll in bed placed in the cabin) Which is what we require but they wont allow this to all the disabled cabins, they cant say it is for health & safety grounds when they allow u to use a much smaller cabin as mentioned before.I cannot see any reason for this and was wondering if anybody had a contact number/ e-mail address of somebody who could specifically address this matter(not a general enquiry line)

Thanks

Only on the newer ships will you find one or two cabins that will sleep more then 2 in a handicap cabin. Trust me I know because our up coming cruise on the Crown will be the first time that my daughter's and I will all be in one cabin. What I have had to do in the past was take my father along so he could have one kid in a wheelchair cabin and I have the other kid in another wheelchair cabin. This will be the first time I haven't had to pay full fare for us to cruise.

Fiona2- Sorry to hear that you are having difficulty locating a Handicap cabin for 3.....I have been there....done that. There a some TA's that are online that have disabled client specialists. I have used one of them with great success.

antsp- It is not your fault that you were assigned a handicap cabin.....you did not know. Know that cruiseline paper brochures are treated like gold it is hard to research your room choices without pulling out your hair. If you can change.... thats great...if not....no problem. You did not knowingly book with hopes of a possible change.

This is where Princess needs to do a better job. They are placing people in these cabins and sometimes the customer does not know this until they arrive on the ship. Most handicapped would have no problem getting a doctor to verify the need for a handicapped cabin and Princess should request one. If the cabin is still open say 45 to 70 days from the date of the cruise, they could let it go at that time.

My parents are in their late 80's and Mom has mobility problems. My sister will usually stay in their cabin to help out.

I would hope that this is checked on somehow, but short of requiring a doctors letter, i don't know how princess comfirms the need for one.....I agree that it would be nice on some future ship to have more of these wheelchair accessible staterooms ...generally they seem to be either interior or balcony with little to none of them being oceanview or mini suite.

I have a reservation on next April's Southern Caribbean cruise and I had to reserve a handicapped cabin (interior) more than a year in advance. I wanted to make sure I got one of the few accessable cabins on the Emerald.

I can tell you that Princess does not hold these cabins for the people that might need them. About a month ago I had a friend who wanted to join our cruise and so we are now in a triple. I was checking online to see what might be available (we were booked inside, I wanted to see if an outside cabin was open). To my surprise, an accessible oceanview cabin was coming up for open booking - this was 90+ days before the cruise. I admit my first thought was "Great! That cabin is huge so having 3 people in there would not be bad!" Then reason took over and I thought "What if someone who really needs it can't cruise because I booked that cabin?". We found another oceanview cabin for us instead. I couldn't help but notice that the accessible cabin did get sold. I hope whoever bought it really needs it.
