Eze - worth it?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone out there have any thoughts on taking the tour to Eze? We're in Monte Carlo for only 7 hours and I'm trying to figure out if its worth giving up some time in MC to see Eze. I'd love to hear feedback from those who have been. Thanks!

I know a lot of people will disagree, but I do not think Eze is worth it on it's own. Last year we were in Monte Carlo for about 8 hours. To make things easier, we took a ships tour to Nice and Eze. Then we spend the afternoon in Monte Carlo.

While Eze is nice to see, I would not spend most of a day there let alone a half a day. Nice was far more exciting and interesting for us. So in My opinion, try all three.

Eze is worth the visit. Make sure you go all the way to the top, great views. MC was not very impressive to us, it was like an old Vegas casino. Monocco is very small and you can see the whole country in a couple of hours.

Personally, we would skip Monte Carlo (we always run out of this town) in favor of Eze or many other places. Its just a personal thing, but we have never found much to like about Monte Carlo....although the palace area is OK for a visit. As to a tour to Eze, you might want to consider that there is also a local bus that runs to Eze...and I suspect its a lot cheaper than a tour.

Hi - we are stopping in Monte Carlo next April and after researching I am thinking that perhaps it might be worth visiting somewhere else at least for part of the day. I was considering Eze....the photos look lovely Jade - but - Hlitner - what "other places" were outstanding for you if you didn't mind me asking....do you have other suggestions? We love history and architecture!

Also, if you are going from Monaco to France - do you have to cross a border and thus need your passport?

Thanks!

Like Hank, I'm not crazy on MC.However, Monacco is lovely to walk around...see the changing of the guard, the Cathedral and little shops.

Took the local bus to Eze...you may have to ask where to go to the village once you get off the bus...the little path is hard to find...lucky for us,a small hotel bus arrived and we just followed them !!

It SOLD me on "perched villages"...of which there are many in France.Just walk and absorb the atmosphere.

I hope you enjoy Eze.

Eze is as beautiful as Jade08's pictures show. You should see at least one of the lovely villages perched high on a hill. They are so typical of the area - each one with its own special charm. St. Paul de Vence is lovely too but Eze is so much closer to Villefranche. If you can do both Eze and Monaco (you don't need a passport to travel from France to Monaco) than go for it. Monaco has beautiful homes and gardens, a changing of the guard at the palace, and the aquarium. I'd prefer all these to Monte Carlo which is just another casino. Villefranche and Cap Ferrat have great views. The Villa Ephrussi on Cap Ferrat was built by a Rothschild and has amazing gardens, views, and interiors. There are so many choices in the area - it's hard to know what to do in a day!

Whatever you choose, it will be wonderful!

For me, Eze is the place to soak up the atmosphere. Nice and Cannes were not all that impressive, however, I used to live in NYC for 25 years so I'm not really that interested in more large cities when I travel (with few exceptions)

Same for MC--Monaco has many great sites without going to the casino.

Monte Carlo & Monaco is a good half day. Would spend the other half day in Eze. Just gorgeous. We always go there. Didn't really care for St. Paul de Vence. Just shops and art galleries..

And Nice doesn't have the charm of Eze. We also love Ville France.

Those pictures really got to me! We loved Eze and did it and the Monaco tour all in the same day. Nice is postcard pretty and Monaco, we were there when they were preparing for the Grand Prix, is busy, crowded and not as enchanting as you might think. Eze is a step back in the past and absolutely lovely. We have talked to people who stayed in thelittle old hotel and I hope to do that someday. Try to work out your time so you can see it. By the way, there are some divine shops along the climb and I have one of the most beautiful evening bags I ever hope to have that is handmade and purchased in Eze and I didn't go there to shop. I am not a big shopper. joyous

Monaco has a totally open boarder with France and Italy. You will not need your passport, and in fact, many cruise lines take your passports and hold them until near the end of the cruise (they sometimes need the documents to get the ship cleared). It is always a good idea to carry a photocopy of your main passport page for ID purposes.

As to other places, our favorite place in the region is St Paul de Vence, but this can be somewhat difficult to get to on your own. We normally rent a car, but using the train/bus combination is possible although its a bit of a pain with the waiting time. Nice is also nice and we also like to have lunch in Antibes on some of our trips.

Well - after reading these posts - like Auntiejo - I think that Eze will be the place we explore! We are docking at 11 am and leave at 10 pm - so will head on over there immediately! Anybody - any fabulous restaurant suggestions for dinner? I suspect Eze would be the better choice for that also.....

We did Eastern Med and Egypt last year on Oceania - and did take photocopies of our passport everywhere - definitely a good idea - just didn't know if a photocopy was good enough if you DID have to present one at the border - so thanks.

Look forward to seeing this area next!

Perhaps I should have further mentioned that there is nothing at the border, in fact, unless you happen to see a sign you would not even know you had changed countries. This is also true for just about the entire European Union. In fact, soon after the EU dropped their borders, we happened to be driving in Spain not far from the Portugese border. We decided to check-out the "new Europe" by driving across the border. Well, in those days they still had the border stations, but they were closed and totally unmanned. Driving or taking the train between EU countries (this also included Monoco) is no different than driving across state lines in the USA.

Hello...

I think that your decision to go to Eze is an excellent one for all of the reasons previously mentioned.

Regarding your request for a wonderful place for dinner in Eze....Chateau de la Chevre D'Or......In my opinion one of the best restaurants in the south of France. It's pricey, but the food and the view are incomparable.

I would think that reservations are necessary, even for lunch....definitely for dinner.

Enjoy!

Fellow Travelers:

Beginning to work on Ruby Princess Barcelona to Venice 28 May cruise with a first port of Monte Carlo 11am/7pm (port or ship transport to shore?).

If you've had a good (or unpleasant) experience with a specific tour company or guide, would you share? The cruise we missed this year stopped in Marseilles, and I missed a great tour of Les Baux, St. Remy, and Avignon (can recommend a guide if anyone is interested?).

A web site or email address would be appreciated. Send directly if you prefer.

Much thanks,

David

Just saw the Bucket List recently and I don't remember seeing it.

Around the dinner in elegant restaurant when wound started to bleed again.

Next scene was Morgan Freeman in bathroom watching Jeopardy while Jack Nicholson have phone conversation with wife.

The pictures were from Eze.

We just returned from a 14 day mediterranean cruise and had a fantastic day with Revelation Tours. We stopped in Monaco, Monte Carlo, Eze, Rothschild Villa, drove through Nice, on to St Paul de Vence where we spent most of our time. We all agreed that if we had it to do over, we would have spent more time in Eze (only had about 40 minutes there). We had enough time to climb up to the cactus garden for breathtaking views and photos, and walked around the village a bit, but not at a leisurely pace, and we didn't have time to walk through the entire village, stop in any of the shops, or sit at a cafe. We were with family members for whom this was their one and only chance to see Europe, so we tried to see as much as we could. But, that is always the dilemma; see less at a relaxing pace and soak it all in or see more and feel rushed. We fell in love with the French Riviera and my husband and I hope to return some day when we have more time to relax and enjoy it.
