sealover155 Posted September 10, 2008 #26 Share Posted September 10, 2008 Please explain the theory of only 2 elevator/stair lobbies for the new Solstice class versus 3 on smaller "M" class ships. I fear massive crowds of scurrying passengers after shows, muster drills, and shore excursions and greater amounts of time spent trolling the hallways. arby70 Posted September 10, 2008 #27 Share Posted September 10, 2008 I have seen a number of programs on ship design and building and they talk about building communities and /or cities on the seas. Do you have any desire to work on designs such as these that are "outside the box" of cruise ship design? I was wondering in your opinion what kind of timeline cities on the seas might be on the horizon (if ever). As cruise ships get longer and larger, do you see a smaller version of a mass transit system (i.e. moving walkways, etc.) being incorporated into these megaships? celebrity cruiser Posted September 11, 2008 #28 Share Posted September 11, 2008 Thank you for this opportunity. 1. What would you say were some of the most difficult situations to design and construct vs. the budget provided, which may have limited the ultimate goals? 2. Are you at liberty to discuss what new navigational and/or communication technologies are available on board, that are not on any other vessel? Thank you, Mark Monmouth County, NJ
Alex7592 Posted September 11, 2008 #29 Share Posted September 11, 2008 I was just wondering, how did you get to the position that you are at today? Your achievements are truly great, what made you able to reach the top? What do you recommend to someone interested in architecture/engineering and thinking about the cruise ship industry? Thanks for the opportunity!
mo&fran Posted September 11, 2008 #30 Share Posted September 11, 2008 I notice the new ships are not getting particularly longer, just wider. Is there a practical length limit on these post-Panamax ships? Will the new Panama canal locks accomidate these largw ships?
mo&fran Posted September 11, 2008 #31 Share Posted September 11, 2008 I ansered my own qyustion. THe new locks will handle ships up to 1200 ft long and 160ft wide. Oasis just fits.
darrencantwait Posted September 11, 2008 #32 Share Posted September 11, 2008 Who was involved in the decision to remove the trademark "X" from the funnel of the Solstice Class ships and replace with and X on the glass balconies that, from the photos I've seen, is currently not terribly visible. As a designer for a large global company myself, I would be curious to know the marketing team's involvement, and if they are asking that this be re-addressed from a branding point of view. Rare hcat Posted September 11, 2008 #33 Share Posted September 11, 2008 Who decided to have grassy areas instead of plain old nice deck space? seems like alot of work to care for & something that people were not clamoring for...
richstacy Posted September 13, 2008 #34 Share Posted September 13, 2008 Considering that the price will continue on an upward trend despite a few dips now and again, do you foresee any alternative power for cruise ships other than fuel oil? Pulverized coal? Nuclear? Sails?
editor@cruisecritic Posted September 22, 2008 #35 Share Posted September 22, 2008 Thanks for all the great questions.... Harri spent more than 1.5 hours on the phone with us and we got to most of the questions. We'll be launching the Q&A next week; stay tuned. gbolton Posted September 29, 2008 #36 Share Posted September 29, 2008 I have been looking to see if the Captain of Solstice has been announced yet but I could not find any details. Do we know who he or she is, and their career history? You could e-mail me at rbolton@ody.ca, thank you.

Mancuso Posted October 28, 2008 #39 Share Posted October 28, 2008 Is this thread a joke? Weeks ago we were told the answers would be posted and they're still not. Then today I see a link posted to the following page: http://www.cruisecritic.com/reviews/review.cfm?ShipID=381 It shows Quiz the Whiz Behind the Ship Design! Are we being taunted? How hard is it to post the answers?
FinelyCruising Posted October 29, 2008 #40 Share Posted October 29, 2008 IMHO something went sideways. The questions were asked with the comment that they would be presented for response. The next step was the idea that an hour and a half discussion took place with most of the questions posed and responded to. Then absolutely nothing after that. Fell over the edge of the earth. I don't bother giving it credit at this point, it seems to me that Cruise Critic and the Cruise Line line decided to declined comment after all the hoop-la. My Guess: The idea was probably not sanctioned and was a premature announcement of agreement between the two parties.
richsea Posted October 29, 2008 #41 Share Posted October 29, 2008 Regardless of the circumstances, I would think that common courtesy dictates some kind of response from the Editor@cruisecritc.

FinelyCruising Posted October 31, 2008 #43 Share Posted October 31, 2008 Rich for what it's worth it seems to me to be a dropped item. This thread is no longer a sticky as well. There were some really excellent questions, and I enjoyed reading them.
