drjpreston Posted November 24, 2008 #26 Share Posted November 24, 2008 I use my blackberry as my modem, but haven't used it on a cruise yet. I have Alltel, I'm hoping I can use it this time. Anyone have any experience with this? Let me know how things work out with your Black Berry. I use my ATT 8310 Curve BB as a modem often when traveling. I have a short West Coast four day scheduled Jan 26, 2009. I will definitely use it to text with. May use it to get selected e-mail. It would be nice to have affordable option to use it as modem if needed.
DaDivaMom Posted November 24, 2008 #27 Share Posted November 24, 2008 When using your cellphone as your modem you will incur the going rate for using the ship's cellular service. That may be more expensive than purchasing minutes. Be very careful that you understand the price points and usage limits. We too have access with our blackberries but made the decision to purchase minutes as ManHo had several tests that he needed to take online while we were on our last cruise. tommy2tone_1999 Posted November 24, 2008 #28 Share Posted November 24, 2008 I'm sure there's some tech savvy person out there reading this thread and thinking "It's free, if you know how to do it right.":D
D4 Posted November 25, 2008 #29 Share Posted November 25, 2008 We were on the Legend 2 weeks ago and had the best internet service we've ever had. We had a great connection in our aft cabin and on our balcony. It was also faster than I've ever experienced on a cruise ship. It was much more convenient to use it from my cabin than have to walk somewhere to find a signal.
BND Posted November 25, 2008 #30 Share Posted November 25, 2008 On Glory three weeks ago and also 2 years ago, our wifi in our cabin (cat 11 mid ship) was fine. At home we have FIOS and had DSL until a year ago and the shipboard connection was almost as fast as our home connections. We log on once per day to check email. We told our families to not call unless it was an emergency, but that we'd be checking email every day. I'm on 10-15 minutes at most per day so not exactly "tied" to my electronics. robtx100 Posted November 25, 2008 #31 Share Posted November 25, 2008 One advantage of using your own laptop instead of the ships computer: you can draft your emails and log on and send them all at one time instead of composing an email and sending, composing and sending. We also bring ours so we can download pics and upload them to discs and share with people in our group or friends we've met on the cruise and did excursions with. celtgrrl Posted December 3, 2008 #32 Share Posted December 3, 2008 I rest my case. Dan i rather think not.....everyone has diff ways of relaxing and enjoying...if you want to leave your celly, blackberry, laptop at home...bully for you! but pray, sir....don't snipe at those who wish to stay in touch, to have their toys and their electronic pleasures...i also use my Macbook to play DVD's! at $11.95 a movie on board vs. watching a free season of Torchwood...well, let's just say i like to have options. maybe i'll have so much fun that i won't open that laptop and i'll be out and about till the wee hours or maybe i'll be sitting on my balcony at 1am feet propped up and enjoying a bit of quiet time relaxing *that* way.....watching a DVD, blogging, or uploading pics and vids to my websites? Ahhh and sipping chard, too! my point was dear Dan40 if you're such a luddite, or a tech isolationist why check out a thread titled: Free Wifi for laptops in the first place? Hmmmm? different strokes folks...and pray don't throw stones....[grins] just online min!

Hmmmm? different strokes folks...and pray don't throw stones....[grins] just online min! I feel sad for those that do not realize that there is a time and a place for everything. And I wonder why someone would plan, schedule, and purchase a vacation designed for entertainment 24/7. And then insist on dragging their electronic pacifier along. I also wonder where it is written that you may judge my attitude against electronics on a cruise, but that I may not do likewise. But then I dismiss that as completely unimportant. Take your laptop, enjoy it wherever you are. Dan
mnlovesdisney Posted December 3, 2008 #34 Share Posted December 3, 2008 I would love not to have computer on vacation. However, sometimes it IS necessary. DD needs to have her computer and Internet access for college classes she is missing while on vacation. Professor is going to e-mail her notes missed while on vacation so she can do paper and e-mail it back to him on time for full credit. Also on the fun side of things DH says he needs computer and Internet access for fantasy football. Me, I'm just going to ignore all that electronic technology and lounge by pool with a good book and DODs:D.
LeeNHCruiser Posted December 3, 2008 #35 Share Posted December 3, 2008 I guess this is another case where everyone is different. We bring our laptop for various reasons. I enjoy the computer and it is something I like to do ~ it's relaxing for me. For some of us emails are the only way our family members can get in touch with us while we're gone. I have pets back at home and feel comfortable knowing the caretakers have access to us if they need it. We also have adult children and elderly parents ~ I would hate to have something happen to anyone while we're gone and they couldn't get a hold of us. mjl1960 Posted December 3, 2008 #36 Share Posted December 3, 2008 This is something (wifi) that should be offed IMHO free to their passengers. It really wouldn't cost them that much after initially getting it set up. They need to get with the times...how else am I going to play online poker? I am definitely going to have withdrawal...and the casino is not the answer, as I don't have a poker face, and playing online lets me hide behind my computer screen. WinnipegCruiser Posted December 3, 2008 #37 Share Posted December 3, 2008 One of the "OLD" advantages to cruising was being out of reach. Some should try it today. Dan I am one of those guys who can't relax if I am totally out of reach.
