I have a great boss that takes us on a trip every year or 2. We go to NYC or on cruises. There are about 25 employees and the married ones all get to take their spouses and if we want to take other family members we do have to pay for those but it is a great company to work for. Very family oriented. I've been with the company for 8 years and have been on 4 cruises and to New York twice, but this is just a perk of a great job that I love.

I am the owner of a very small company and three times in the past ten years I have sent my employees on a vacation (2 cruises and 1 Key West vacation). We shut down the business for a week and while they are off on their vacation the DW and I take a vacation somewhere else. I did not want them to feel uncomfortable with the "boss" around.

I worked in a large hospital complex in Cleveland, but had my own secretary and my own nurse who worked with me every day. About 12 years ago after several cruises with my family the aforementioned got tired of me raving about cruising, pointing out that they, being single mom's, could in no way afford a cruise and politely asked that I please stop talking about it. So a few month later I bought them each airfare to Miami and a 3 night cruise with my wife and I on the Nordic Empress to Nassau and Coco Cay for Christmas. It was a huge success and they had a marvelous time, as did we. My secretary even won $300 in the casino with my $25 seed money. They both said that they had the best time of their lives! That made me feel good too. Jim

Prehaps a better poll question might be if your boss invited you on a cruise would you go or find a "I would love to but".....story!?!

This is what I was thinking, lol. We learned long ago it is very unwise to do any social things with co-workers/bosses. We listen to the gossip about others that attend happy hours and events, however we wisely do our own thing.

Thanks but we can afford our own cruise.

My husband changed jobs last year (against my wishes) because he was told the Owner lets everyone choose one cruise from a list each year. I had my first cruise booked 13 years ago, but had to cancel, so he was trying to do something nice for me. Owner was generous and allowed me and our children to go. It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. I was never so happy as I was on the balcony of that ship. My soul sang on the sea, and our beautiful planet seems so small and accessible while on a gorgeous cruise ship - I never wanted it to end.

BUT MONKEY: Owner treats whoever she takes (and she goes every few months) like total crud when they get back to the office. My husband was told by the other employees this was normal behavior for her. She uses the cruises to punish certain employees by taking other employees. You are expected to kiss butt above and beyond normal butt-kissing in order to "deserve" a cruise. Meanwhile, we all know she uses them as tax write-offs.

No thank you card or amount of verbal thanks is enough for Owner. You are seen as ungrateful unless you slobber noticeably at her feet.

I am happy to wait five more years and save up for my own cruise rather than be indebted to someone who seems to resent taking me in the first place.

I work for a civil engineer and my husband works in construction. Well you know how the construction business is in New Jersey so we're lucky to have jobs. In fact, last week my husbands pay check came and there was a memo actually thanking everyone for their hard work and dedication in these tough times and that the future looked bright. Then we went to the bank to cash the check and there was insufficient funds. Some bright future - LOL. On the other hand, my company hasn't given a raise or bonus in 2 years and cut our hours from 40 to 32 and that included our pay and when you say anything they say you should be thankful to have a job never mind a thank you.

We've done 2 cruises, and many weekend getaways....team building weekends and continuting education class weekends to keep our licenses current. It's always on the boss's dime, and always staff only. The classes are mandatory attendance for everyone who's there for the weekend or cruise, but nobody complains, even if its really early in the am, especially if we've been out too late the night before. I know this is the exception, especially in this economy, but we do appreciate all our boss does for us, and he this is how he thanks us for a job well done. We enjoy each other's company in and out of the office, and get many comments from our patients that it shows in how well we all work together.

Quite honestly, this is kind of a strange poll question. In this economy I hardly think any boss, unless it's someone the caliber of Oprah or Bill Gates, would take their staff on a cruise. With bailouts, bankruptcies, layoffs and firings, there isn't room in today's economy for this kind of thing.

Oh, I dunno. Our CEO is still finding ways to treat himself to goodies. while no one is getting an increase. but him.
