Bar Set-up has been discontinued as of TODAY

I always order a bottle of port. the price has been rising steadily. Do you think they will allow a bottle of port(wine) if I pay the $15.00 fee?

IMO they should allow it.

The worst that can happen is if they don't allow it as wine they'll hold it and you'll get the bottle back at the end of the cruise.

my whole take on the drinking thing onboard is this:

the prices are not really any more (and definitely not less) than what we find on land. the MAIN difference is...we aren't going to our neighborhood bars 7 days in a row from morning until night. (ok i'm sure there are some career barflies). as for watered down...i guess it depends on the drink itself. but anyway...

...you know what i mean.

i'm ok with rum runners.

I'm with you on the rum runners. I guess i will have to place my order with them so i have them for our next cruise.

As far as watered down i'm comparing my cruise last month on Carnival and trust me the difference was amazing. Not watered down at all. As a matter of fact when tasted you could actually taste the booze :D Now that's a drink and is what i don't mind paying for ;)

THIS IS BULL****!

How interesting that the boards have recently been all about the bar set up because its a much better deal and the smartest thing you could do, and now NCL has taken it away.

TYPICAL.

I havent even cruised with them yet, and they are already pissing me off.

Is NCL a full refund if you cancel a month or so ahead of time??

Well, with that attitude you're probably better off canceling. Cruising is about having a relaxing vacation, not gearing up for a fight about everything that doesn't please you. I've been on more than 30 cruises on numerous cruise lines, and I've never been on one where everything is perfect or exactly to my liking, but I've also never been on one that I didn't enjoy.

By George I think you've got it!!! NCL has secretly bought out Rumrunners and they're trying to get us to buy the product! Sneaky. ;):D:D:D

just received a phone call from Sheehan's office. after my email this morning.

They told me this is a result of a program to monitor alcohol abuse on board.

They have a started a crew training program to monitor passenger alcohol use for so called safety reasons on board. I guess they can not monitor in your cabins.I think this is absurd that we now have alcohol police on board--does tis mean no wine in my cabin?/ No alcohol in my frig.

Mr. Sheehan you really need to think hard about this-- why do i need a vacation where i now have to contend with a big brother alcohol watch.

Well apparently I CANT cancel because its too short notice. (not that its a for sure thing)

And Im 24....I HAVENT been on 30 cruises(good for you), and my money DOESN'T come easy to me. So this bar set up was really ideal.

Glad YOU have a good time and for YOU a cruise means relaxing, and apparently can you can afford what ever you want, but I am irritated, and like to be able to drink freely on vacation, without having a 500 dollar bill at the end.

So spare my your holier than thou, ( ) everything is just fine attitude.

The only one Im "gearing up to fight" is people like YOU.

These cruise vacations mean different things for different people.

ahhhhh...now there sounds like a typical business move..."passenger safety". now i can totally understand why a company would go that route.

however, in light of the recent Carnival incident (i have not read any more about it other than the initial article. i am not saying alcohol was the prime factor).

i suppose one could extrapolate the curve and determine the "what ifs" with alcohol abuse. and let's face it...all it takes is for a couple bad drunks to make for a dangerous situation for the rest of the passengers. and what stinks is...it's this type of pax profile that a company would have to protect itself against.

i'm glad that i am programmed to be a happy drunk. :D

It's not THAT much more. The bottles were very pricey.

Subject: Bar set up service

I am cruising on the Gem at the end of November and I was informed that bar set up in room has now been discontinued on all the ships. Not that this is a deal breaker for me or anything but I am curious to know the reasoning for this. I always found it enjoyable to have a drink every now and them while sitting on my balcony.

Regards,

Suzanne

The email I have which works is:

Yup, me too! :p (glad that both of us are programmed to be happy drunks!)

I actually believe that this was the reason for the restriction in the first place - to bringing on your own alcohol I mean. When we were on the Star, we participated in two pub crawls that were really fun and we met some great people. On the Pearl in January, I was really looking forward to doing it again, but when I saw nothing in the Dailies, I inquired about it to the Hotel Director and he explained that they'd had some 'unfortunate incidents involving overindulgence' and they had to stop having them. It's the classic case of one bad apple spoiling it for the rest of us, and while I think it's a very sad turn of events for those of us who enjoy having our own bar in our cabins, I do not blame NCL for taking this step.

I have seen obnoxious drunks on cruise ships far too many times to think that it is not an issue. Over the past few years that I've been here, also, I've seen many articles posted about everything from passengers going overboard to assaults to accidents and more, and more often than not, alcohol is involved or suspected. I absolutely agree that 'Big Brother' sucks, but at the same time, I agree that there is a safety issue, and I'm okay with being monitored because I don't need monitoring... if that makes any sense.

obviously you are talking about the ship sponsored pub crawls. not the game that someone posted here some time ago where you hop from cabin to cabin....it also utilizes playing cards.

something like that.

i guess you can also say they don't want their ships turning into a college party.

Yup, then its back to doing my own cabin crawls as stated above - we use the cards playing poker as we go and then go from cabin to cabin getting a shot of what ever the host smuggled on and that was never too much to make anyone intoxicated - Just loosened up and had more fun! I thought the ship sponsered one sounded fun with trivia questions and prizes as you went from bar to bar. I was looking forward to trying that - oh well!

I also received a call from someone in Mr. Sheehan's office. This person did not mention anything about a "program to monitor alcohol abuse on board". He did say that they have been overwhelmed with emails and phone calls. He said they are gathering all of the information and will review the situation. He told me he would update me early next week.

I got the call as well but with the " being more responsible about alcohol onboard" spin. "Not a quick decision but one they have studied for a long time."

While I do think it's a responsible move on their part do you SERIOUSLY think this "crew training" will have any effect? "Sorry sir I cannot sell you any more drinks as you are starting to appear intoxicated".

Cruise lines make the majority of their profits on liquor sales (along with excursions and casino). Trust me, they won't bite the hand that feeds it.

It sounds like a few people are getting called back. I did not include my phone number in the email but I did include my Latitudes number. The guy I talked to said they were being absolutely inundated with contacts. We'll see what he says next week.

I also got an email back from Dennis Nau (Sr. VP Hotel Operations) thanking me for bringing this to his attention and he will look into it.

If I remember correctly, didn't they change their minds about liquor in the Owner's Suites after a similar outcry?

I'll bring a nice one along for Bermuda and if they do...you can have a drink on me :P)

perhaps.

but we are speculating at the actual reason for taking this action. i do support that "guess" as a plausible reason to stop the bar set ups.

we all know there is a narrow margin for profit each time a ship sails out. so with cruise prices being as low as they have been...i wouldn't be surprised if the cruise price gets bumped up a bit.

not that i'm for it. i just wouldn't be surprised.

First of all - thank you to the many posters for the e-mail address - I just send mine asking for a reconsideration of this policy.

I can't see that alcohol abuse would be the reason - if someone wants to abuse alcohol, they'll get it from any source they can. I also think revenue sales doesn't make sense - the cost of the bar set up rose last year (we happily paid it) - we have just so much budgeted for drinks - whether for drinks at the pool, wine with dinner or the bar set - doesn't matter - dollars are dollars. And I can see the numbers of smugglers increasing dramatically.

Used to be (at least on HAL) you could bring alcohol to your cabin that you purchased in the ship store; then there was the service charge; $10 per bottle extra to take it to your cabin, then NCL had this great bar set-up program. The cruise lines giveth and the cruise lines taketh away.

I hope that by expressing our displeasure NCL will reconsider.
