Puerto Limon-- safe to walk around?

We have been to Costa Rica before, and we're not interested in the normal cruise excursions which seem to be duplicated by tour operators. Anyone do anything different?

Been there once and did a cruise tour. My recollection is that it was not safe to walk around but things are always changing.

Been there a few times, it is safe enough for me BUT I am 6' 5" , 230.

Plan a tour. Nothing to do on your own walking.

Go to the ports of call board for info.

Some research on the Costa Rico board would be beneficial.

We've been to that port before and did the nature stuff. I wish the ship offered some of the non-nature excursions other lines offer. We took this cruise in 2009 and, in looking over the excursions then, I see they offered almost twice as many with a greater variety.

"We walked around, but everything was closed....it was Easter weekend. We didn't feel unsafe, but there were few people around, and we didn't spend a lot of time wandering. There were quite a few folks asking to "shine our shoes" (we were wearing flip flops) and pestered us until we gave them a dollar......and its of people offering to take us here or there on tours.,...
