Naughty room tips...

My husband was called to the naughty room about 10 years ago 'to remove the small Leatherman tool' in his suitcase. He always kept it with his dive/camera gear and had cruised with it for 15 years.

They knew exactly what the offending item was but they would not open the (unlocked) suitcase. He was given the option of tossing it in the trash or go across the street (in Puerto Rico) and FedEx it home for $75. He tossed it.

Btw, I walked on the ship with my 12" aluminum knitting needles, no question.

Are they still calling people to the naughty room these days? They are destroying any alcoholic beverage found in checked luggage now. We received a letter in our stateroom saying they destroyed our wine which we forgot to remove from the plastic bins in our suitcase before we boarded. This was two weeks ago. We never got called to the naughty room. Just the letter.

Trust me, we'll never make that mistake again.

We begged guest services and security to please not destroy it and let us have it back on the last night as it was very pricey wine. They stated the new policy was to destroy any alcohol found in checked bags, as was written in our letter.

That was a very expensive mistake :(

Great policy. Might slow down people's desire to break the rules. Best not to smuggle so as to not have to worry about getting called to the "naughty room".

Not sure about recent cruises, but a few years ago one of the guys in our group was smuggling. His luggage did not show up with everyone elses, and there was a note for him to report to security.. He said they asked him to open his luggage and remove the contraband. Not sure what he had the liquor in, but he said he said he told them to go ahead and take look he did not know what they were looking for. He said once the suitcase was open they just kind of glanced at it and said OK you can go. He said most of the people in line were freaking out and nervous. We all had a good laugh about it. So I guess if you do get called, put on your game face and bluff it out. Or try to. ;;)

Wow this is a significant change in policy! What ship were you on? Wonder if anyone else has had this happen to them or a "friend" on other ships?

Sorry you lost your nice wine :(

We just got off the Fantasy last week and got the letter about our bottle of wine, when I went to pick it up on debarkation day the people next to me found out that their bottled water had been destroyed.

They were upset that they got a letter stating to come pick it up only to find the water had been destroyed.

All other alcohol seemed intact.

The new policy started mid July and is in effect for all ships. If they find any alcohol you are trying to smuggle in, it will be destroyed rather than returned on the last night of the cruise. Any alcohol you purchase on the islands or in the Fun Shop is no longer delivered the last night, but must be picked up by you on the morning of disembarkation at a designated spot. No bottles of water or pop or juice are permitted. You may bring 12 cans of pop or water or juice on board at embarkation. We used to bring more pop on at ports, but that is also no longer allowed.

We just got off the sensation august 6, and they "destroyed " our wine too. My husband decided to leave his carry on with the porters figuring he didn't really need it...forgetting our wine was in it. Got the same letter. We called too and they said there was nothing they could do. I was upset because one of them was my favorite bottle and I had been saving it just for the cruise.

Ouch, that was sad for you and the wine. This change was made during Watergate and the policy started July 9th. You are the first to report they actually destroyed the wine.

On my very first cruise I brought a small knife (within the standards of CCL) and was taken aside and asked to take it out to show the security agent... Apparently it looked much scarier through the scanner than in real life. Upon further inspection they said "ok, we just wanted to see it" and I was allowed to board with it...

This is ridiculous...destroying sealed wine/spirits because they cannot be bothered to keep it below decks for the cruise?

I know for certain that many cruisers including myself like to spend a few days to a few weeks before they cruise in a foreign port. It is likely during that time you may want to pick up a bottle of specialist spirit/ a few bottles of local wine.

I wonder if you can contact Carnival in advance and present the alcohol at check in for it to be stored?

I am just hoping they are as lax on the Vista next year with bringing alcohol on at ports as they were on our European Legend cruise. We put a bag of 2 vodka bottles with a champagne bottle in the middle through the scanner and they waved us on. We did the same with beers and things for the rest of the ports.

Actually what is ridiculous is people that can't follow the rules they voluntarily agreed to follow and bring it on ship to begin with. If it were me in charge of security on a Carnival ship, I'd call the smugglers down to the naughty room so they could see me personally break their bottle of booty in front of them. :)

We tried to smuggle some liquor on our last cruise (did it successfully three times before) and were 'caught.' My husbands luggage (where we put it) was the last to arrive so we kind of assumed they found it. Lol - no naughty room but we did get a 'naughty' letter. Someone had some fun with our "mouthwash"!!! Hehe

We will be law abiding cruisers in the future. :)
