I zoomed in for a picture to try to figure out what this gray building was...anyone? Maybe an older concession stand they use to run?

Definitely not an older concession stand. What was there was an honest to goodness building with barstool seating at the bar. Need to search some old pictures to see if I have any.

Could be that the town government or Bermuda government figured out it was a waste to have that very nice large beach abandoned and decided to do something about it. If the beach has some facilities and chair rentals it should draw more visitors to St. George.

That sure would be nice. It's such a beautiful beach to just go to waste.

So you are saying it was a bar then? I consider a bar like a concession stand type building either way ...some place to purchase drinks (I would assume they would have had more than just alcohol for those that don't drink). I know the building was pretty darn small. It looked like a shack and was smaller than the one they were building...which wasn't very big to begin with to me. :p

There was also a big hotel on the hill which was taken down. We actually saw it blown up on one of those explosion cable TV shows. Was the hotel ever rebuilt?

Nope. Construction never started on the planned new hotel. I think the financing never happened. That seems to happen often in Bermuda. Plans are announced but the projects never happen.

The new building is a restaurant and bar, and rents beach chairs. No mention of bathroom facilities. They also plan to have DJs on weekend evenings:

Thanks for posting the link.

How can they meet health department requirements for a restaurant if they don't have bathroom facilities? I wouldn't buy any food there if they don't. I would rent the chairs and buy drinks from a can but that is all.

Some of the things in this article struck me as "weird" and I'm a little thrown off by it.

has quietly opened a food hut on the beach-What does that mean? He did it without any permits or inspections or what? I'm not sure how things are done in Bermuda but that's just weird. It makes it sound like he was sneaky and did this without permission or anyone knowing.

pending the official thumbs-up from the health department AND officially started serving food on the first day of Cup Match-How are you open for business without first getting approval from the health department saying everything is ok?

People can bring their own bottle and hang out, and we have a community cooler. -A community cooler for you to store you own booze in? How do you keep everyones things separated? I can see it now "I brought that, no I brought that, who took my bottle of wine?" Then my next question is why would any company (especially just starting out) be providing a service like this when they are in the endeavor to make money. If you let people bring their own booze, you lose money.

We have fresh wahoo today and last week we had fresh dolphin. I'm a little put off by this. They are killing and serving dolphins there? Or did they completely word this wrong and meant dolphin fish (mahimahi)? They should choose their words a little better if so.

After attending the hotel college in Bermuda-I'm guessing this is supposed to sound like an added plus and that this means he's a smart business man that has had schooling, but when you add the "hotel" in front of it, it totally discredits what they were trying to accomplish to me. Obviously a work related thing he had to do, provided by the company at the hotel, in order to work there for his job back then and they tried to fancy it up by calling it college.

It's always great to see a new business start up and hopefully they will be successful. It's just a weird article to me knowing they don't have a full license yet and the health department hasn't gave them a stamp of approval yet. :( Then the added fact that there's no restroom there makes me wonder how they will be able to be legit at all. I always thought there has to be a restroom at an establishment. Unless...once again, things are different in Bermuda.

Such a shame that everything was torn down in anticipation of something that never happened.

Anyway, I always read the comments from the locals on articles and someone else has the same question.

Zan • an hour ago

Can someone tell me how one can build a shack on a public beach without planning permission, get electricity to the building, serve food and drink and not be required to have any sanitary facilities?

...because he knows somebody in planning

Mitsugirly, don't dismiss the Bermuda Hotel College since it is a legitimate department of the Bermuda College.

I wonder too, about the community cooler. However, many restaurants have BYOB, yes it's just wine but it's also a revenue drain.;) Guess he figures he will make money from the food and rentals.

On a side note, my understanding was all the utilities were torn out way back, water, electricity, when but I guess maybe they weren't.

He is taking about a fish. Dolphin Fish. I believe the fish is called Mahi Mahi in the US because people were getting confused that it was Dolphin.

If you read the article carefully, he says he has a temporary license. My impression from reading the article is that the only thing he can't do without the full license is sell alcoholic beverages.

Also, let's not forget that we're reading an edited version of some newspaper reporter's interpretation of what the owner told him. All the facts may not be in the article.

Ok, I didn't realize that. I guess that's a good thing then. :)

Which is exactly what I said in my statement (and you quoted) along with the actualy name of Mahimahi, but the article didn't put the "fish" on the end of it. :D ;) A little confusing.

Since you knew about Dolphin fish you should not have been confused. They article said fresh Wahoo today and fresh Dolphin last week. It didn't say fresh Wahoo fish today and fresh Dolphin last week. So since Wahoo is fish and Dolphin is fish it is pretty obvious he was talking about fish.

There's no wahoo dolphin or wahoo shark or anything that I'm aware of that's wahoo other than a fish. So that's obvious. Not everyone knows of a dolphin fish. So yes, confusing to people that would be reading and wonder and I think it should have said fish at the end. I can guarantee most of the people I know would have no clue and think it's an actual dolphin. ;) So not obvious to everyone.

Club Med was it's third incarnation. It was built as a Holiday Inn! I think the Club Med closed after it was badly damaged by a hurricane so it was not exactly that it didn't work out.

Saw this today. Hotel groundbreaking in 2016. We shall see....

http://www.royalgazette.com/article/20150819/NEWS/150819648

I'm not holding my breath after so many false starts since the hotel was imploded, actually, even before. I remember Ewart Brown, when he was premier, guaranteeing and quieting all the pessimists that groundbreaking for the new hotel was imminent.

A casino? Can't see that happening.

That's awesome to hear it is up and running now with at least "some type" of facilities. Thanks for the report.
