Taxi cost Gatwick to Southampton??? How diffucult is the train?

Recommended Posts

There are about 4 trains per hour from Gatwick Airport south to Brighton. (40 minutes) These are operated by Southern Railway and First Capitol Connect.

There is at least 1 train per hour from Brighton west to Southampton Central. (1 hr, 40 minutes) These are operated by Southern Railway.

Taxi from Southampton Central to your ship. (15 minutes)

All easy to do assuming one suitcase and one carry-on each.

I have no idea about a taxi from Gatwick to Southampton but it would be a budget buster to me!

I have heard that the rail station is right there at the airport and is really easy to make the connection. Taking a taxi will be very expensive. Even getting a taxi in Rome will cost you $260 to $300 US currency these days to the port. I really think the train will be easy if you don't carry 50 pairs of shoes. Tim

The above site shows examples of train journeys from LGW to Southampton. As can be seen, some are direct and others involve changes. It is probably also possible to do the journey by National Express coach.

Southampton station to the port is only about 1 mile.

A further option might be to hire a car.

Just make sure you get to the SOUTH terminal at Gatwick in case your flight comes in to the North terminal. Once there, it was very easy to purchase the train tickets to Southampton. They take major credit cards and were very nice. You then go downstairs (either by escalator or elevator). There will be several train workers on the platform who were VERY helpful when we were there. We just asked which train we needed. He showed us which train and made sure we were in the FIRST FOUR cars as they are the ones that go on to Southampton from Gatwick. You will have stops along the way, but they are very short.

It was a very pleasant ride and I would definitely do it again!

Anyone have any estimates or personal experiences. We had a mishap and the shuttle transfer was never booked!! Any help would be GREAT!

Thanks

Rachel

Train is the only way to go. Southern Trains offer hourly London Gatwick -> Southampton. As someone else has already mentioned, there's a ticket booth in the airport (south terminal) and you just take the elevator down to the platform. Take the train to SOUTHAMPTON CENTRAL, and the cruise ships are a very short cab ride, or even a less than mile walk .

The train from Gatwick to Southhampton was not only easy but less than half the price of a cruise ship transfer. I dont remember the exact price but less than half.

It was a very easy process, we were on a train within a half hour of getting our luggage.

When we arrived in Southhampton, we could see the cruise ship so we decided to walk. It was about 15 minutes.

When we disembarked, we got a taxi back to the train station. We were going into London and those trains ran even more frequently.

We enjoyed it, it was mostly locals on the train.

The previous posts are correct on where to get the train, etc

It was a very easy train trip.

Please note, there are NO direct trains LGW - Soton on a Sunday. If you are travelling on a Sunday you will have to go via Clapham Junction and change trains. As such, this is not a problem, but you will have to use stairs, so if you have mobility issues it could be a problem.

You cannot better the train option if you have the time and don't need to travel on a sunday.

The train is right in the Airport and easy at the other end.

£10 pp or £20 for 2,3,4 persons + £1 per child(max 4 per adult ticket).

The train is easy if you don't have a heap of luggage. There is no one to help you with luggage so you have to get it on and off the train on your own and you can't block the aisles or doors with it.

My husband is not allowed to carry luggage so we are limited to what this old wife can manage on her own and do.

Just make sure you get to the SOUTH terminal at Gatwick in case your flight comes in to the North terminal.

The free monorail between North Terminal and South Terminal is shutting down at the end of September. Its replacement won't go live until next summer.

There will be a bus replacement service between the 2 terminals so its no big deal, but more hassle than with the monorail.

National express bus is probably the best overall option but this does mean getting to the central bus station(in the middle of T1,2,3.

regular service 1per hour 1.5hr-2hr £21pp return.

Natonal Express bus http://www.nationalexpress.com/coach/index.cfm

Whatever terminal you arrive at in LHR, get the bus from the central bus station by terminals 1,2 &3. This comes up on the National Express site as HEATHROW. There is free transport from T4 and T5 to T1,2&3. For your arrival point, put SOUTHAMPTON...ignore the cruise terminal option. The bus station in Southampton is about a £5 cab ride to the ships. Book the bus as soon as you know thats what you want to do, as they do get booked up by Southampton cruisers.

What would classify as "heaps" of luggage? We are family of four each with our own suitcase and a carryon (backpack). We try not to take more than we can each handle. We would love to take the train and see the countryside.

There's often some space at the ends of the carriages, but this depends on which route and which type of rolling stock. Where seats are arranged back-to-back, there's also some space between the seat backs into which you can slide luggage if it's not too bulky.

Otherwise, it's a question of improvisation. If the train isn't busy, you can sometimes use floor space that has the effect of blocking off one or more seats. Nobody minds if the train isn't full. Just try not to block the aisles.

Thanks for the information. It's just the kind of details I like to know; we just don't do the train travel as in Europe.

Need to be at Gatwick South Terminal for a flight leaving at 11am

What chance of disembarking off Celebrity Eclipes and catching the train to Gatwick on time. It will be a Saturday.
