Tapas in Barcelona

There are no venues in Barcelona that do not have tourists, while some are frequented heavily by locals as well. Ciudad Condal is probably the best of these and they do have one of their locations just above Plaza Catalunya not far from the top of the Ramblas.

They offer very high quality tapas and the Cava Sangria is a fantastic beverage option that is very popular in Barcelona. The price is mid-range, but in relation to quality the value is high.

The point of tapas is to do the "tapeo" (tah-PAY-oh) - a neighborhood stroll (pub crawl) to different tapas bars. The object is not to make a meal in one place. Plan to go to three or four restaurants in the neighborhood. Have a couple of tapas and a glass of wine in each. That's what the locals do.

What you are after is having the traditional tapas dishes: jamon pata negra, pulpo a la gallega, papas bravas, albondigas, pimientos del padron, stuffed piquillo peppers, etc, etc, etc.

Do look for some recommendations, but most neighborhood bars do not make the US review lists. However, they are excellent just the same.

You might want to consider doing a tour with The Barcelona Taste? We did one back in 2012 and it was excellent. 4 venues, 2 different kinds of tapas, wine and cheese, and a bakery for dessert. All food and drink included plus a walking tour. And only one place had tourists, the rest were out of the way...

We very much enjoyed Cuines Santa Caterina, not far from Las Ramblas, northeast of the cathedral square.

We had dinner at ATN, which was located close to a Roman excavation of tombs just off Las Ramblas on Canuda Street. The restaurant was open, even though it was about early by Spanish dinner standards. We had a wonderful meal with great service. Separate checks were not a problem with a party of six and credit cards were accepted. The next day, we had dinner at small tapas restaurant near the Plaza Sant Just on Palma De Sant Just. That restaurant, Bodega LaPalma, was not modern like ATN, but small and rustic. The tapas were excellent, with large servings for very reasonable prices. I highly recommend both restaurants.

If you want to eat where the locals go, dont choose a restaurant on Las Ramblas - they are just for the tourists!

The Concierge at the Majestic Hotel recommended it and we have always enjoyed fabulous Tapas at

Cerveceria Catalana

Carrer de Mallorca, 236, 08008 Barcelona, Spain (Eixample)

You'll find it on the corner of Rambla de Catalunya and Carrer de Mallorca, 6 blocks up from the Placa de Catalunya - the delicious food makes the walk worthwhile!

You wont be disappointed!
