agabbymama Posted August 30, 2014 #7 Share Posted August 30, 2014 Head to your library and check out a couple of Alaska guide books. Then start a graph with the cruiselines/ships across the top. Then list the things of importance to you (size of ship, ports, time in ports, cabin type, cost, excursions, etc) down the side. As you research and read, put an "X" in the conjoining box. As you near the end of your research and really know what YOU want to do, one should have more X's than the others. Only you know your preference and what you want to see and do. I chose HAL for an 8 day land + 3 day cruise ($2750 pp) as I knew I only had 10 vacation days. Whereas Princess did 8 days land + 7 day cruise ($4400 pp). Have fun planning, then taking your cruisetour. Alaska is an awesome destination.
Krazy Kruizers Posted August 30, 2014 #8 Share Posted August 30, 2014 Both Princess and HAL have been in the Alaskan business the longest -- for both land and cruises.
donaldsc Posted August 30, 2014 #9 Share Posted August 30, 2014 Forget cruise/tours. Do your cruise if you must but if you really want to see AK, you should do a DIY pure land tour. Use the Alaska Marine Highway to get to the places that roads do not reach. DON
Rare geoherb Posted August 31, 2014 #10 Share Posted August 31, 2014 We did five nights on land before a cruise with Princess a couple of years ago. We flew into Fairbanks and spent two nights there before taking the train to Denali, doing the Tundra Wilderness Tour there, then a bus to the Mount McKinley Lodge, another bus to Anchorage, and another bus to Whittier. It was great. Princess has been doing Alaskan tours for so long that everything is down to a science. For instance, when you are transferring between hotels, you get your room assignments and keys before you get to the next lodge/hotel. They also transfer your large luggage between the lodges/hotels and have it ready for you in your room when you arrive. Our cruise tour included activities that we probably would not have done otherwise, including the steamboat excursion in Fairbanks and the gold dredge there as well. Both were great activities. We had a great time on the train ride down to Denali. I'm glad we upgraded from the Natural History Tour to the Tundra Wilderness Tour--as recommended by so many here on Cruise Critic. When we compared our experience with that of the people who had gone on the other tour, we realized how much more we had been able to experience.
