Can Two Adults Enjoy a Disney Cruise w/o Kids?

Hi, my wife and I would like to cruise Disney. Background: we have been to Disneyworld many times with our kids/grandkids. We have taken cruises with our kids/grandkids, and we have cruised by ourselves. My question is: do you think we could enjoy Disney Wonder or Magic without our kids? We like the looks of these ships; they look like a ship from the 1960's; verses Fantasy or Dream. We have not been on Disney Cruise line before; only Royal Caribbean. So what do you think?

In a word.....YES and you will be amazed how many other adult couples and singles for that matter cruise DCL!

We have done DCL cruises without the kids or grandkids and loved it. Is a good deal like going to WDW without kids, your see and do many things you never did before.

The Dream class vessels has the same classic liner theming that the classics do. We especially like Satellite falls on the fantasy, on the upper deck forward. A Adult area, with a nice a quiet feel, with the water falls and the shady over head.

What ever you do enjoy your cruise!

If you don't care about casinos or partying until dawn, then yes a Disney cruise is great for adults only. My hubby and I love DCL and they are our favorite line.

Both the Magic and Dream class ships mimic the golden age of ocean liners design. The Dream class is just bigger.

To repeat: Yes.

All of our cruises have been adult-only. Even the ones where we took the "kids", as the youngest was 19 at the time.

Our last cruise was DH & I, DHs mother and her husband, DHs sister and her husband.

We have plans for more adult only cruises in the future.

YES, you will enjoy it without kids. All of our cruises have been without kids, and you will be surprised at how many people cruise Disney that don't have kids with them. We actually just booked our 3rd, and 4th cruises last night......again with no kids.

If the same two adults can enjoy spending time together in a relatively enclosed space on land, then the answer is a resounding "Yes."

There are many adult only areas of the ship--unfortunately some are better enforced than others. There are adult only activities as well. Unfortunately, Disney no longer does dining assignments by age (used to be based on youngest person in the party--roughly infants and toddlers, then school age children, then teens/adults). They were never totally strict about this--a request for a particular server or rotation would over-ride it--but it resulted in one relatively quiet rotation without lots of little ones. So sad they didn't continue this.

But yes, 2 adults can have a great cruise on DCL.

If you love Disney and love the classic lines of the ships (from what you've seen) then yes I think you will enjoy it.

I've been cruising since the late 70's but my DH has only done Disney. We are middle-aged with no children and our 18th Disney cruise is coming up. :)

Wow, thanks for the feedback. It does sound like we would have a good time on any of the Disney ships. We don't gamble so not having a casino is ok with us; since some of you say all the ships have the Disney laid back theme and they all have the classic ocean liner vibe; then we could choose any of the ships. Again, thanks for all the feedback and it's all positive.

my son did DCL for honeymoon ... and they were at a big table for dinner that was ALL honeymoon couples so the answer is yes

but I'd offer one point that hasn't been mentioned. Altho there are 'adult only areas', you will never really be without kids around . . . . you can not eat in the adults only specialty restaurants every meal, kids 'transition thru' the adult pool area every 37 seconds, or come looking for mom or mom brings 'em in cuz 'no one will mind.' As long as this is what you expect you'll be fine . . .

Disney is GREAT if you are really a Disney lover .... if you want the same level of quality but don't have to have the Disney aura ... spend the same amount on another 'quality' cruise. Something like Windstar for example. DW and I have done the Disney thing with the kids and loved it ... but we don't miss it either.

We used to long for days WDW would be open for adults only . . . . 'til we had kids that is (was). Now we don't go much, but when there are grandkids I suppose we'll be back

People have different experiences, but on our cruises we did not have a problem with kids coming through the adult area constantly, just every now and then but left when mom or dad answered their question. Any child that tried to stay in the adult area were quickly sent away by the crew. They did a great job enforcing the adults only rule. Children going into adult areas happen on other lines as well and for the most part do not get sent away. I wouldn't let it stop me from cruising disney.

My experience is very much like Capt BJ's. On ALL ships, parents and kids regard the forward section of the pool deck (by the adult pool) as an appropriate walk/run/skate thru area even though there are signs at each end stating that this area is for guests 18 and over. And there are parents hanging out at the adult pool with kids who come in to ask a question or whatever. Why they are not supervising these children who are obviously NOT in the programming is beyond my understanding as is why the kid needs to enter the adult area rather than using any house phone or their stateroom phone to call mom on the wave phone. There seems to be a thought process that if they don't stay long, it won't matter. We've also seen parents bring kids into the Cove Cafe--the CM working the area wants his tips, so he usually doesn't say anything.

I'm not trying to be a child hater--I'm not. But I feel that they should stay OUT of the adult only areas. I'm not allowed to play in the OC or Lab except during rare specified hours; they should not be entering my area either.

As to other lines--we were pleased with the enforcement on Celebrity. The adult pool had 2 hours of clearly posted times when it was open to families/children. During other hours, children were not permitted and it was enforced.

Yes 2 adults may enjoy a DCL cruise even more than the children that I've seen standing in line several times a day for a photo with a character .

Oh yeah, they have the Disney Characters come around just like WDW. That's cool. Thanks

We have six grandkids and we have taken them to WDW and on Royal Caribbean Freedom of the Seas; so kids running thru adult area would not bother my wife at all. Me; I don't hang out in the sun; so I would not spend much time in the Adult pool area.

I just posted to Irene7; kids coming in and out of adult area would not bother my wife; I won't be there; stay go out in sun too much

Yes!

We do not have children and we've been on the Wonder three times now. She's such a gorgeous ship and I DID like feeling I could be traveling in another time on her.

We loved Palo. We loved the excursions. I even played bingo. BINGO! Me. That's crazy. There are adult-only areas, and we loved loved loved the spa. Yet, suddenly Pluto would appear and you could play for a bit with him. It was just lovely on each and every cruise we took on the Wonder.

We also enjoyed watching all of the families have a great time with their kids. It made us feel more like a family, even though there is just two of us.

I was very happy to see this thread. I have been thinking about trying Disney with my husband. I will be looking for a last minute type of cruise in the winter of 2015 out of Port C which we can drive to.

How is the food? We love good food.

The whole food question is a highly personal decision. In Palo and Remy, it is excellent. Surprisingly, at dinner in Cabanas/Topsiders, it is also very good.

In the main dining rooms....we found some dishes to be great, but most to be at the top of "just OK." On our second to last cruise we had a server who was "unmotivated" to say the least. Our service was slow and our food was always cold. Since it was a B2B, we asked for a different server for the second leg and the food improved markedly.

We've had much better food on Celebrity...but to be fair, the service was better on DCL most of the time. If you are a foodie, DCL probably isn't the place.

You are right the food question is a highly personal decision. In the past few year the best food I had was on Emerald Princess. To me, the food was better than the two cruises I took on Azamara. The food has changed a lot since I first started cruising back in the 1970's. I would be happy if Disney's food were just a step up from RCCL's Freedom.

Six DCL cruises now, ranging from 3 days to 12 days on all four ships. No kids, but great fun! And we sat on our own or with other adults in the dining rooms.

RubySue, you are a testament that adults can go on a Disney ship without kids and have a good time. Thank you for the feedback. What is it about Disney that has made you come back more than twice; and did you want to try out all four ships; what is the biggest difference between the Wonder/Magic and Fantasy/Dream? I know the Dream/Fantasy are newer and larger; but is there a major difference in choosing one over the other? Thanks
