Moms what have you packed for your boys for dinner...

I have 10 & 7 yr old

No shorts or flip flops allowed in the dining room right?

So khakis and polos?

That's what i have seen on most cruises. I actually saw a Dad and his two sons (about 6 & 8) wearing a Tuxs on formal night.

We keep it simple but appropriate by bringing 2pr of twill pants and 3 or 4 polo's for each of our little boys for a 7 night. These are only worn for dinner. Tux or shirt with jacket for formal night. Our boys are 17,16,8 & 7. The big boys are pretty safe with 1 pair of pants, but since they wear the same size, 3pr between them is a safe bet as well as 2 polo's each. That frees up their luggage for an outfit per day for casual stuff.

If your boys don't normally wear these type of things and you need to buy them, hit Walmart.com and check out their school uniform section for cheap options. They have especially good sales at this time of year.

  • 2 months later...

We leave next month for our first cruise with the kids, I was planning on bringing dressier shorts (plaid) with a solid colour golf shirt for them for dinner. We are only on a five night and packing very light so one pair of shorts with two different colour tops for 3 or so MDR dinners.

We sail mainly NCL, but the boys wear nice shirts and a polo or dress shirt to supper, although my boys are under 12. On formal night they wear dress pants, dress shirt, tie and ds1 (8 yrs) wears a blazer. On DCL we swapped shorts for khaki or dark coloured cotton pants and they were certainly some of the more dressed up children.

Boys are a bit harder to dress up for supper, but they look so handsome!

I got a few button down shirts from our local Facebook marketplace for $3 each and 2 ties. Khakis, button down shirt and tie every night for us. FOr formal night, I got him a navy blue sport coat from the same Facebook group. I would never have paid retail prices for it, but I got it for $4, and he looked so cute!

But, there were plenty of boys in khakis and polos.

Again, depends on your cruiseline. Shorts will not be permitted on RCI or Celebrity.

The same for us. For formal night a nice shirt with tie. If space is an issue one pair for black slacks should work.

When my son was younger I got a suit from Walmart for $25. Love those pictures. As he got older I skipped that for many reasons including it's the only time it would be worn and he would then grow out of it. We usually do khakis and polos and it's never been an issue.

It is Carnival and I've seen kids wearing shorts in there before. They have full suits but there isn't room for them. I may bring a tie.

Depends on your cruise and style.

We use formal nights to get annual family photos so have had our son in a tux and also bring a full 5 piece suit.

Other meals he usually wears slacks and a button down shirt.

If you aren't dressy people, then khakis and a polo are fine. Don't forget decent shoes. :)

On both the cruises I've been on, the AC was pretty cranked in the MDR. Even if you are on a cruise ship that will allow shorts, you may find your children are better behaved at dinner if they aren't too cold. I had to buy my daughter an emergency shall on the last cruise because she was too cold most nights.

Formal nights are suits. Casual night are polos or button downs and khaki pants.

I always figure you can't go wrong with khakis and polos. For formal night we do khakis, blue button down shirt, and a blue blazer, but mostly because we like to get a family photo.

On Allure last week my 9 year old DS wore dressy shorts and polo tops to the MDR on casual nights. No one said a word (lots of adult men in our area were wearing shorts as well). On formal nights he wore khakis, a dress shirt and tie. I love little boys all dressed up.

My son wore a tuxedo on formal night. On smart casual nights, he alternated between corduroy pants and a dress shirt, or sometimes he'd ask to wear his "suit" (a shirt and tie with dress pants). He loved getting compliments on being so nicely attired.
