Huelva

Recommended Posts

Our ship, ms Koningsdam, will stop in Huelva next May and since we spent a few days in Sevilla last year, we don't want to take an excursion there.

Is there anything to see in Huelva? They have not posted the tours yet.

No horseback riding for us. We prefer to go sightseeing. Thank you.

Huelva is a traditional tourist destination for the Spanish and many families vacation here every year at Easter and other key holiday weeks. Huelva is both a region of Andalucía and the city that is it's capital.

This area is not developed in the same way as the somewhat 'overbuilt' tourist areas of Spain.

Punta Umbria is the beach area and is a main draw in the area.

While this area may lack the 'architectural' wonders you will find in most of Spain, this is an excellent place for a well traveled person to get a feel for 'traditional' Spain, where the Spanish themselves spend holidays.

I have had a couple of great Easter time visits to this region and the truth is what I most enjoyed was the tradition of the region and how each restaurant had their particular special dish. I even spent evenings having meals at multiple restaurants where we would go around sampling the specialties.

Enjoy your visit.

I also have a question about Huelva - but slightly different. We would like to go to Seville, just to the Alcazar. I think the drive would be something over an hour? Do you think the best way to do it would be to get a Seville tour guide to pick us up at the Huelva port, and does anyone have any recommendations for a driver/guide? (We will be there in October, 2016.)

Huelva is the burial place of 'The Man Who Never Was'; if you are interested in World War 2 history it is easy to get to the cemetery to see his grave.

If you don't know the story look here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_Who_Never_Was and also see if you can find the 1956 film of the story on You Tube. Some of the films characters/storylines are ficticious added for dramatic effect, but the crux of the story is true and the film is very watchable.

Oops - just seen this is a thread from last year apart from the last post. However, I hope my 'The Man Who Never Was' info may still be of interest to someone.
