Royal anytime dining : what's your experience?

If you want to eat at about 7:00 to 7:30 PM you may need to wait for a table. After a few days we learned that you can make a standing reservation if you go to the dining room and speak to the manager. Just calling the dine line doesn't work, they tell you to just show up; when you do, you get a pager and have to wait 15 - 30 minutes.

Standing reservations are at the discretion of the MD. Fabio was not allowing them between 6 and 8 on the Royal in October (you could have one at 5:30 but didn't really need it unless you wanted a specific waiter pair)

BTW if you do want a good waiter, ask for Gilman.

We had a standing reservation at 7:30 PM on the October 25 cruise.

I'm confused why people get a standing reservation after choosing anytime dining. We've noticed this happening quite a bit and I wonder if it's more for convenience time wise , or if a great waiter/table was discovered the first night. We've done both traditional and anytime. I like both, but find much nicer service with traditional.

A bit of both? Some people really want TD but at their time. That's not the way AD is supposed to be but some MDs allow it. Sometimes its a matter of accommodation, like a messed up booking. And yes, sometimes you find that waiter combo that just clicks.

I still prefer the way Jacques did it on the Island. Other than one special case, you could request a standing time, or a standing table area, but not both. If you wanted both, you had to call daily.
