We are coming from Florence to Rome on the train. Where is the best place to stay.

The best? I like the Hotel Hassler at Piazza Trinita dei Monti 6. But it's not cheap. What exactly are you looking for?

The best area is the historic center. And the heart of that is the Pantheon/Piazza Navonna area…….

if looking for a great hotel - try the Albergo del Senato. Also not cheap but truly the very best location. You can walk to all the sites easily.

I agree with the previous poster……. what are you looking for ? and price ? There are hundreds and hundreds of hotels - all prices etc…… it would help if you gave us some more info…….

We like the Hotel Campo de Fiori and Hotel Smeraldo both in the heart of all the sights . Everything within walking distance including Vatican City, St Peters, Castel de St Angelo, Trevi fountain, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Campo de Fiori, Piazza Farnesse, Church St Andrea de Valle. Great trattorias in area.

Book direct via individual hotel websites to avoid paying middleman commissions .

Define "best".

Many consider the "best" to be the Cavalleri. Beautiful hotel.

Yep. Just like when people ask what is the "best" airfare - usually they are talking "cheapest." Does the OP mean cheapest, best by ranking (other than TA), best location, best bed, etc...

I've stayed at the Cavalleri - looks rather blah from the outside (picture 1950s utilitarian), but it is lavish on the inside. Rooms are bigger than the standard Euro-room. Most on this sit think of "best" as "best location to be near the tourist attractions." The Cavallieri definitely doesn't fit that as it is up on top of the highest hill in Rome and you need to take a shuttle to get down the hill to Piazza Barberini and then walk 10 minutes or so to the Centro Storico.

We found a little unexpected gem right near Barberini:

Hotel Majestic.

It's classified as 4-5 star, but this is NOT per USA standards.

(Don't expect something ultra luxe or modern.)

It is much less than the "top tier" hotels like the St. Regis (which is not even in a good location).

But it is in a great location (one end of Via Veneto), and has a truly old-world charm.

Each room is different.

The staff are really warm and helpful, from the arrival to the (sad) departure.

We enjoyed staying here so much last year that we cancelled our second hotel in Rome (for when we returned from Florence), and stayed a few additional days at the Majestic.

NOTE: The first floor rooms facing the street are *noisy* from the traffic, so ask for a higher floor (there are only 5 or 6 floors).

We were upgraded on our return, and had an amazing private terrace at the top, with quite a view of much of Rome.

We also took the Concierge's recommendations for dinners.

The only "not so good" dinner we had was when we tried to choose a restaurant on our own. Didn't make that mistake a second time!

We found special non-refundable rates, and it was well worth it.

We booked an apartment through housetrip.com It was in the san Giovanni area a couple of blocks off the metro, groceries near by, small restaurants. The apartment had 1 king bedroom, living room and kitchen in a small apartment building on the first floor, had an elevator. We were there for several days and did our own thing. Easy to take the Metro to wherever we wanted to go. Cost was about $150/night... could be less now with the Euro down.

Not sure what you need....

We like the Albergo Cesari. It is an historic hotel near the Pantheon. It's well-priced, clean, simple, comfortable, and has a great rooftop bar...breakfast is included.

We also like Albergo Cesari. We stayed this past October and will be staying there again this coming October.
